I am building my first Vanquish kit the Phoenix straight axle. And just completed the VFD transmission .. as soon i went to reach into the box for the next bag i noticed they included what looks like 2? sets of machined gears for the VFD transfer case?? Is that normal? I just finished assembling the whole things with the sintered gears that come in the assembly bag .. Is it because the sintered gears are known to fail or something?? Is it worth my taking it apart again and swapping the machined gear set in? I apologize if this has been covered before .. but i went through a couple pages and didnt see anything. And seems strange to me as it looks like they included 2 sets?

Looks like you scored on two sets for free [emoji1303]

There have been quite a few reports of failed idler gears in the transfer case.

Personally, I would install the machined gears now rather than later. That, combined with the aluminum bearing plates included with the straight axle kit, should give you a pretty solid transmission setup.

I too believe you were lucky, as VP did away with the free machined gears. I just received my Phoenix straight axle and it had no free gears. I recently researched the difference between sintered, machined, cast and forged gears. To make a long story short, there is nothing wrong with sintered parts. What matters is what materials went into those parts and the quality control. IMO the best would be machined forged gears as the grain of the metal flows into all directions of the part then machined to spec. I would assume that VP's machined gears come from a billet or are cast then machined. But I don't have that info. If I had to guess I would say the machined gears have a slight edge.

Lucky you for getting two sets!

My vs4-10 portal kit came with the promotion set of the machined gears too, but they weren’t labeled for retail sale like your second set. Just an unlabeled bag of gears.

The sintered gears will be fine unless you’re trying to push big power through it.

I had those two gear sets in my kit too, I also didnt see them until after the trans. was built and installed. I will change them out when Iam in the trans, again. Thank You VP."thumbsup"

Don't feel bad, I forgot about them and just followed the manual. I will use them on my straight axle that I think didn't come with them.
