its time! full on BWD mini mantis.. test, tune an crawl!

I got out today for some crawling. Was running some sick ass lines, getting ready for some video an Bam.. no more go! Wtf! That was twice today that I was crawling good, got the camera ready an broken rig! I don't go crawling, ever, with one rig or spare parts.. well today, after a couple 3 hrs.. I broke a cf steering arm on my xr, got the mini out an stripped something in the tranny.. idlers gear I'm thinkin.. all 4 wheels spin when I turn one by hand. This is why I like the HR idler gears but stock diff gear with metal lockers.. the idler gears are the most prone for breaking teeth off.. I just don't like the weak HR diff gear an aluminum locker area.. surprise surprise, you can buy a HR diff gear by its self but can't find anywhere to just buy the idler.. wth! Oh well.. rant over..

I still have to take it apart to know which gear for sure stripped, but I think its the motivation I need to do the rest of the build.. front axle, new tranny gears, motor, an maybe some late model mrc shocks or mini-t shocks.. my mrc shocks are limited 11-12mm as is an laid back. So the front mini-t might be what I need or the rear, which I think is the same as the late model mrc shocks.. so I would have the choice of both an not just have two shocks laying around then.. I guess ill just see what I find..

The winner is........

I forgot how tricky this chassis is.. it was a little easier the first time, as I built the chassis with the tranny in. Lol.. I guess it really wasn't all that hard.. 4 screws holding the cab on an 2 lower link screws, other then the 4 tranny screws, an she was out.. sure enough it was the idler gear. Oh well, new one in an back together.

Next order of business..

With red creeper hex an the wheels on the way they were ment to be mounted, I'm pushing 8".. like 7 15/16".. not much room for error.. nice part is, I can use skinnier hex, pinch an pull my tires to stand them up an get them skinnier, flip them around like the front wheels now, or cut the xr axle down an shorten the uni axle shaft.. but that's last resort.

Of course the steering already looks sick!

Tomm will be, cutting the uni's axle down, grind the uni its self, for smoother steering rotation, an grind flats in for the locker. I have yet to decide if I'm cutting the old ones down out of my xr or goin straight for The new ones I had laying around.. I think new an tight will last longer in the mini.

Ok a little help.. from anyone with a late model mrc shock.. body length, eye to eye.. this is what I have an what I'm looking for..

From left. Mini-t front shock, mini-t rear shock, my 11mm limited pro shock from my mantis, front pro shock with 5mm limited.. 2.60" is eye to eye of what I have.

What's the lenod the late model mrc shock? Thanks..

Is it the same as a mini-t rear?

I may even need the front if anyone has em sitting in a box...

Just measured it for ya and the eye to eye on the Mini late model shocks is 2.25" This is with grinding down the tab on top and putting on a shock cap from the Pro shocks...

Well.. I picked up a mini-t, mini rage lot an it came with a surprise pair of aluminum mini-t rear shocks.. lucky me...
I started looking at them an decided it was time to do some swapping an modding.. what's bein used... Mrc aluminum bodies, mini-t tini coated shafts, red mini-t springs an white jeepinDougcups.. of course a dremel.. 8)

With one shock done...

First step to finishing the steering mod.. get shocks done.. step two.. cut an fit universals to length an fit lockers tight..

Right off the bat, this is what I got..

 awesome man. Very nice work on both accounts"thumbsup"

Thanks Christian.. yay! It's put together... And back apart it comes.. I forgot a pinion gear, dam it! Well this is potential steering, if the links wouldn't get in the way..

Yes, yes they do! The universals work with the wheels turned that much.. with some dremel love of course..

I was getting a slight bind during yet fitting so while it was apart a switch out for longer front links. Which may go back an put a spacer in, but ill test run first..

This is with a 7.5" track width..

A little bit of steering then to show space available..

A3815584-orig.jpg

Notice it hits the steering arm on the shock mount.. not much room left

Flex shot with modded shocks..

Now for switching the front wheels to back an back to front.. gives a 8"front track width an the wheel wideners on the back for 7.25"

Now the extra available room to get even more out of it..

Crazyness!

Tomm ill get the tie rod an drag link delt with an get some comparison shots of the lcc steering an xr/wraith steering..

Awesome work you have done here man"thumbsup" but where is the castor??

It's there, its just as much as stock vp will give.. tho I thought the same thing.. I'm going to run it how it is for right now.. track width might have to be delt with yet, I might switch the xr pieces from side to side( to get the longer tabs on the bottom an shorter ones one the top.. or ill just dremel enough out to a lot the chubs for added castor. Options options options.. all followed after testing an trial an error.

First I want to say killer work. Looks great. With that being said though that is to much work for a RC crawler though.
