Gun and knife picture thread!

Why did the East Coast kill it? I thought NC was "redneck" friendly? I mean only rednecks like guns according to the media, right?

And I couldn't resist getting the shiny Odin Works barrel out in the sun for some photos.

I'll preface by saying I got spoiled after five years in NM and then seven in Phoenix where the majority of the land was BLM or FS. Drive 15 minutes out of town in any direction and shoot, party, "park", hunt, ride ATVs pretty much anywhere you wanted and no one cared, and you'd never see anyone else. All private land out here, or parks. You can pay $300 a year to dove hunt on a managed field (snore), or go to one of a few gun ranges and pay $25/hr to punch paper (SNORE). It's like fishing at a trout farm.

I have yet to see anything NC is friendly to that I'm even remotely interested in...even rednecks here are preppy wannabes in Carolina squatted trucks. And yes, the Northern mentality (nothing personal meant as you obviously do not possess it) has planted firmly here from all the transplants who now outnumber natives. What other kind of ridiculous place would be so active against tobacco when it built everything here or work so hard to pacify the liberal morons who want to tear down all the Confederate monuments when that's their heritage?

That sure is a pretty barrel though! Doesn't take much just reading names like Lyman, Brownell's, Odin and Midway to make me nostalgic all over again!

Why did you move? I love riding ATVs as well. Mine sits since my friends sold theirs. There isn't much to ride here unless you drive 2 hours, but we were lucky and had relatives within a half hour that had 80 acres. But last I heard nobody rides there anymore either and the tracks and trails were all overgrown.

2mtech is dead on! Preach it brother!!

It's so much bullshit. Even out here in the sticks, I'm literally have close to 100,000 acres of USFS land surrounding me, and you aren't allowed to shoot anywhere anymore other than a designated public range. I'm fine with that, if they'd just give us more and longer ranges. But they've closed a few, and I see more closings coming. They also don't want anyone in the woods period, unless you're a grubby AT hiker (not that I have anything against hikers). The mentality here is; "We have a ton of land that the public pays the upkeep on, but we really don't want the public using said land." It's a big reason I jumped all over the chance at the game lease, and the opportunity to shoot long range anytime I feel like making the drive down. Having a well cared for and well fed deer population doesn't hurt either. Hell, the best part is the owners and their family made me feel right at home my very first trip down. I know my buddy that got me in on it usually eats Thanksgiving with them. They're just really good people.

Tim, congrats man. Looks like the start of a super nice build. I'm anxious to see what you end up with.

So one of the companies I ordered from for my M5 .308 build turned out to be shit bags, and wanted to start making changes to the build kit I ordered that included the complete upper. I promptly called and cancelled my order. Then turned around and did what I should have done to begin with. Thank goodness there are still decent gun companies out there, and I still got a decent deal at the end of the day on stuff that will be much better quality. Now the wait is gonna drive me crazy! But that's okay, because I'm still waiting on my glass for the bolt gun anyway. So maybe I'll get to break 'em both in on the same day.

You ask all the hard questions lol. Short answer: The Air Force moved me here. After 12 years I finally escaped via a one-year remote to Korea, and then the bastids sent me right back here 75 miles down the road! I said screw y'all and retired. Kids had grown up and settled here, fell into a good job with high pay through a friend, was in a mortgage I couldn't get out of. 12 years later they pay me way more than I'm worth or could make elsewhere, the girl's aging 50 member family is here, still stuck in the same piracy mortgage, so what do ya do?

I had a four-wheeler in '04. Had several great places to ride, good group...then they closed all the places except one which is now so overrun with idiots (they've killed four people there in the last three years) I wanted no part of it. At least on the Waverunners we can get away from most of the mental midgets, unless we go to the coast which is mandatory attendance for the most intellectually challenged able to find the coast and get a boat in the water.

So I found RC. Aside from a phuckwit USFS ranger now and again and the 180,000 trendy people taking their dog to the park it's almost tolerable most of the time.

I hadn't ever given air guns any serious consideration, but that sector seems to have changed dramatically, no doubt as restrictions on firearms have continued to grow. May be time to reconsider...

Hear, hear. I would be heartbroken to find out the west has changed similarly, but we went out last summer so I know it hasn't. Was SOOO hard to come back here!

Modern air guns are an outstanding way to work on marksmanship skills. The fact they fire a round much slower than a powder burner means if you don't follow through consistently every time, you'll throw the shot, similar to archery. Shooting a good five shot group with an air gun is TOUGH! And like most, I don't count three shot groups. 5x5 for any accuracy testing, then take the mean of all groups, and that's your average group size. I still have one PCP (pre charged pneumatic) carbine that I'll never get rid of, along with a couple springers and one piston driven gun.

Everybody up north is an asshole and they love living on top of one another.
Kids barely have yards anymore. Maybe that's why I am the way I am. I used to be extremely nice. :ror: Everybody here is too busy, most commutes are far too long in traffic, work consumes life and everybody ends up ignorant, rude, selfish, and just a complete dick.

Anyway, you can't even shoot on your own land if you have enough to do it safely???

Thank you! I have most of the parts so now I'm starting to get excited as well! The big components left to choose are the butt stock and and the buffer. I'm leaning towards the Mission First Tactical Battlelink Minimalist Stock or the Strike Industries Viper. For the buffer tube I'm thinking about making that the only red component on the gun. I'm leaning towards no, but I'd like some red. I love the red and black combo. Also, companies like Strike Industries and Geissele have their own takes on buffer springs to minimize sound. Have you guys ever tried that? There's even a company that makes a captured buffer spring assembly that looks like it came out of a pistol. I'd love to try it if it wasn't over $100.

Family is the main reason that I stay here.

Yep, you can shoot on your own privately owned land all you want. But I don't know anybody that has enough land to shoot very far. So for now, in this area, public ranges are all I have other than the 20yd indoor range that I'm a member of.

I haven't messed with any of the silent buffer systems personally. I know some are well regarded though. If I was doing a supressed build, then I'd probably go that route. Otherwise I really don't see the point in it personally. I tend to just stick with things that are proven performers. The less monkeying around to get things to run 100% the better for me personally.

I can imagine. I won't consider my scoped Remington .177 pump very modern, although it's not all that old. Well, then again it's probably 15 years old...damn! I have a Crosman C02 S&W Model 59 but it's horribly inaccurate.

In any case, the pump gets old fast. Pellets are a lot easier to handload though...only need one die! "thumbsup"

My ex's family all lived in West Chester, Downingtown and Bryn Mawr so I feel for you, brother...SEPA was not for me!!

I live way out in the county and have 80 acres of farmland adjacent to my backyard, and have been kicked off for shooting in it by the sheriff even with the owner's permission when the crops were out. So no, even if it were my own land I couldn't shoot because of the noise. The trashy neighbors can blare hip hop all they want, though...sure don't want to upset them.

What's supposed to be the point of the captured buffer, just sound reduction?

I know those areas. I'm within an hour of all of them. I'm north of those.

That's annoying. Who would have ever thought we'd live in a world where we'd have less freedoms. Guns are bad and you can't even use your land the way you'd like if your neighbors complain.

Less sound and vibration from what I understand.

Oh and a compensator is the other part I need besides the buffer tube and butt stock. I want something stainless to match my barrel. Although I'll probably regret this SS barrel thing when I realize how much harder I have to work to clean it.

I think you'd be surprised...my SS Redhawk and GP100 were the easiest to clean guns I owned.

Stainless barrels are actually easier to clean, and tend to be more accurate due to this over the life of the barrel vs regular. But, they have a shorter lifespan overrall, so it's a trade off. If you get a comp, remember to remind your neighbors at the range that you're running one or you'll be "that guy". LOL Or, if you have assholes next to you at the range that you want rid of, grab the biggest gun you own with a comp and start firing and don't say a word.

I can't believe the cops can kick you off of private land out in the country. I'd be for looking up the county noise ordinance laws. Around here, you can do whatever the hell you want from 7AM till 11PM as long it's not physically harming anyone else.

LOL...I used to be that guy. When we did go to the indoor range I liked to take the .44 Redhawk loaded with ultra hot magnum rounds. Great with some poor city guy next lane trying to learn to shoot his .25 Davis or .380 pocket pistol. Even more fun was loading some of those rounds with standard pistol primers instead of magnum ones. Left a lot of powder still burning after the bullet left the muzzle so it'd spit flame like an F-15 in afterburner and light up the range. Shameful. :lmao:

I guess I should've said he told me I couldn't shoot there vs physically making me leave the property. Even still, I was 300 yds away from the houses and shooting away into a berm at the edge of the woods. Granted, it was a Glock 23 in .40 S&W so it had a decent bark, but still.

Good to hear stainless barrels are easier to clean. But I'm not a cleaner so I'm sure the barrel will remain somewhat black for a while after shooting. :lmao: Cleaning pistols is so much easier so I do that more frequently.

My current AR has the typical bird cage flash hider which I guess really isn't a comp. I'm not a shooting competitor and ARs don't really kick hard or rise much so maybe I don't need a compensator. I've heard they can be loud as hell and I'd prefer the quietest option really. The tin roof of the awning at my gun club already makes your average hunting rifle sound like a cannon. But at the same time I guess I wouldn't mind trying a mild compensator.

NOOOOOOO! Please clean your guns.

The A2 birdcage is okay for what it was designed for. Not great, but okay. If you're gonna run some 3 gun matches, or like rapid fire (and rapidly emptying the wallet on ammo LOL) then a comp is nice to have. I will be running a comp on the .308 build though. Not so much for recoil (at least I don't think so, I've shot a lot of .308 rifles but not an AR in .308), as the fact that the more still I can keep the rifle, the more likely I am to spot my own hits/misses.

I enjoy cleaning hanguns so they're usually clean. :lmao:

After thinking about it I might just start with a flash hider.

If you want to try a comp that won't break the bank, but gets good reviews, the Strike Industries J Comp is about $40 shipped. It's what's going on the M5 build. Some guys swear by comps, some hate 'em. I've had them on bolt guns, and they damn sure work. But they can be LOUD  (just depends on design), and your spotter will likely hate you if you have one. I ran a combat carbine class with a buddy that brought a damned 14.5" AR with a brake welded on it. I cussed him all day. :lmao:

Living in SWPA isn't so bad I guess because if you have property no one seems to care if you shoot around here. My friend owns some land close to where I live and he is expanding his personal range to 300 + yards. It should be pretty fun when he is done. Obviously it is by no means long range but it's better than the State 100yd range.

Hpiguy I have a .308 AR built on an Aero Precision M5 receiver set. It has a 20" Faxon fluted barrel with a LuthAr rifle stock. I have an AAC brakeout 51t muzzle device on it. Obviously it is a brake not a compensator but it does help with recoil. If I am shooting off a bench on a bipod it has a decent amount of recoil. Nothing too bad but I started feeling it after 80rds last time I was shooting. Standing offhand recoil is barely noticeable. I shoot almost exclusively suppressed anymore (AAC 7.62SD suppressor) but without the can it is definitely loud because of the brake.

I don't particularly like posting pictures of my evil black rifles on the internet but I feel as if I'm going to have to just so no one thinks I'm full of it.

Actually I did make a mistake earlier in this thread that I noticed while moving my stuff around the other day and wanted to correct. My 1-8 Vortex scope is a Strike Eagle not a Viper.

Hell, I'd love to have 300yds local.

Have you been happy with it? Had any issues at all or anything to watch for?

The J Comp is actually a brake if you read the TTAG reviews. This is for 5.56, but the principle is the same, and brakes of the same design usually do the same or better with more gasses to work with. This is what they had to say about it;

The J-Comp is actually pretty damn awesome. It’s an extremely effective brake, despite exhibiting low concussion, blast, and flash, and it has a simple and classic sort of a design. Machining and finish (note that mine’s a bit beat up on the wrench flats from being installed and removed a half dozen times) are average, but the price is dirt cheap. Although the $16, 3-chamber brake off Amazon beat the J-Comp in performance per dollar in Shootout #1, the J-Comp is leaps and bounds nicer in fit and finish (plus has wrench flats so you can actually install it) and has significantly less concussion/blast. It basically crushes the other ~55 muzzle brake and comps in recoil reduction per dollar.

I didn't have any real "problems" but I started out with what many people think are required parts on these guns. An adjustable gas block.

In order to keep this short here is what I found with my rifle. If there are 2 o-rings behind the extractor on your bolt take one out. My rifle prefers 7.62 loads not hot .308 loads as it is. It shoots anything accurately but I get some failures to extract with hotter .308 loads even with adjusting the gas block. I really need a heavier rifle buffer. Buffer weight and spring tuning are key especially if using collapsible stocks. The action unlocks too fast without doing this. That is what my rifles problem is.

I bought 500rds of GGG 7.62 ammo and 100rds of PMC XTac 7.62 ammo and neither one cause me any problems with my current setup so I just stick to 7.62 loads and not the hotter .308 stuff. I just punch holes in paper at 200yds or less so I don't need to max out the gun. I can shot right around MOA with it off a bipod so I'm happy. The scope I have is a Primary Arms 4x16 with the ACSS reticle.
