Dingo Body needs.... something.....???

I took a pic of the damage,
but it does not show how truly messed up it looks.

I know some would say its not that bad but I like to beat up my rigs
on the rocks and trails, not on the workbench, and this really disappointed me.

But Im not a quitter! Just look at my drinking and smoking!!! :lmao:

If it comes down to it, I can get another body shell with decals,
but I may try to hide it with a bug shield instead.

A bug shield on a geared down, trail running, rock humping Defender 90,
now thats funny! About as usefull as a belly button on Adam and Eve!!!
(think about it, go ahead, take your time......)

So with all that in mind, Ill just kept pressing on....

I still have to put in my driver figure, and show how I made a half
naked wrestler figure look like he was wearing a Tshirt. (as in the Mog)

Thats why I made my roof a snap-in piece,
and I decided to try the same with the windshield.
Putting things together and pulling them apart a hundred times
for test fitting just beats up your details and paint,
so these snap in parts helps to keep things in shape,
and its just a lot easier to get into the interior.

My mirrors came with the roof rack I decided to try out.

Duratrax 1/10 Roof Rack & Side Mirror Set

After looking at them I realized not only would they work OK on the
Dingo, but if I did things right, I could use them and their
mounting screws to make the entire windshield piece snap in place.

This would keep my mirrors from getting busted up too,
while I work on the rest of the outer details,
as I can just remove the whole winshield frame.

I think the pics show more than I could explain in words,
and I have to tell you, it holds in tight enough that I will
just be leaving it as is after the build is done.

Past that I glued on my diamond plate pieces on the hood,
and even used that DAMNED Toluene to thin the ShoeGoo a bit again.

But I learned my lesson,
and used the mixed glue much more spareingly so none would squeze out
past the edges like the grill did, which caused all my issues
in the first place....

Still to come is that driver figure,
custom OEM type bumpers,
my method of building bumper mounted tow shackles,
light system install,
snorkel fabrication,
possibly a rectangular water bucket/jug carrier and mold build,
the other scale details I havent even thought of/built yet
and whatever else comes into mind and play.

Oh yeah, and a bug shield LOL! :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Speaking of hand/home made scale accessories....

I believe I will mount the HL jack I made a bit ago on this build.

Im thinking under the rear cab window,
where nothing can get to it and snap it in half!!!

FWIW, I fabricated everything else you see in the pics too,
the shovel, pic axe, sludge barrel, etc......

This was my referance pic:

hi_lift_jack.jpg

But like I said before, I build by eye.
Only time I use a steel, or any other ruler is to cut a straight/square,
or even spaced lines on my styrene.

...And using math to scale down actual sizes is just beyond me...
(besides, that dont always work when your spaces are pre-defined
by the bodies you use, and have no control over)

Past that I just get lucky, because all my efforts are very
close to scale, and I just build stuff to fit my trucks well.

Here is a progression of build shots for the HL jack
that shows how tiny some of these details can, and need to be.

But believe me, if I knew the PL one was so nice,
I would have just bought the damn thing.......

I think the dingo looks great and those scale items are incredible! I don't really see the damage but I'd look at some real life pics for some I tem that would maybe be mounted up front.

I dont know, you might be right?

(trust me, I have hundreds of Defender pics to look at LOL,
first thing I did was TONS of research!)

I have seen a bunch of stuff on the hoods already,
but it gets military looking fast!? (been there, done that)

But those hood/deck plates are there just so drivers and navigators
can crawl up on the "bonnet" to get to the stuff on the roof rack fast.

Last thing I want is my Driver/Nav figures getting tripped up on
junk stuck on the front trunk when their deep in the spunk!!!

eh....

On the far end, I have NO IDEA what I will do or fabricate next!

Part of building by eye, for me at least,
is making shit up as I go along......

I could never, nor do I have the ability,
to DRAW OUT and stick to any ONE plan or build scheme.

For instance, this Dingo build was supposed to be my first
SCX build that was TOTALY stock, out of 10 others.......

NO NOTHING added, not even fender wells,
but look what I got myself into anyway???

I swear, I cant help myself, and I dont regret a SECOND of it!

OK, possibly that Toulene issue, BUT, Ill get over that!

Cog-sorry to hear about the toloune mishap! That's the main ingredient in Shoe Goo, so obviously the best way to thin it down. I had NO idea that it would go after the plastic.
SORRY MAN!

How about building a nice new bumper with a grille guard to come up over the damaged area?"thumbsup"

Edit-your HiLift jack is killer!

HA! Mr.Joshua "thumbsup"

It was all my fault bro! The Toulene did its job, just like you said
it would, and I will use that trick a million times again!

I spread on the thined GOO way to thick, and when it squeezed out
under my clamps, I MADE A MESS OF IT, not you...

So you stop thinking about it like you did something wrong!!

It just takes time to use new things you learn about,
and this was my fault.

And that Toulene was truly the best thing to thin out ShoeGoo!!!

I just didnt know what the hell I was doing.....

As far as I am concerned, you still taught me a valuable lesson,
that as I said, will be used over, and over again. "thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup"

(remember also, that mix was what I used for the diamond plates
on the hood too, but with a bit more caution)

OH, and yeah, I might build an Over-The-Top front ROO-BAR also,
with a low/high step to get up on the hood over the winch...............

DAMN, did I say winch? oops...........

You made me blow my next secret, Mr.Joshua 8)

Right on...is your metal work as good as your styrene work? Or are we going to see a custom styrene bumper/winch?
I've been working on my metal skills more, just starting to play with styrene for my JK interior"thumbsup"

Awesome Awesome work!! I never thought the ugly dingo body (dont be offended i have one) could look so brilliant!! Your skills are top notch!

My metal skills are pretty fair.
I started working as a welder/fabricator back in '86,
but went into awnings and signs 15 or so years ago.
Still had to weld and fabricate commercial awning frames
doing that though.

I just dont have any tools for the small stuff right now,
save for a light duty 110v MIG welder running gas, not flux core.
I just need to have my buddy come down and help
me wire an outlet to the side of the house with
a 40 amp breaker because I keep tripping the lines I have now.

Should be good for a lot of stuff like tube frames,
but Ill be picking up a small brazing kit some time too.

Ill be making these bumpers out of styrene tho.
I have found if I build them well, they are just as strong
as anything I can make useing brass,
and its a lot less work for me.

This Dingo is just going to be a light duty trail truck anyway.
I have plenty of rock beater rigs already....

The winch is going to be fake on the outside,
with a servo conversion tucked under the body someplace.
I have Wild Willy mock one, If I can find it....

Im not very fond of the out of box Dingo body either, so no offence taken.

I had a vision of what I wanted to do after getting mine,
which was JUST a hard top, but the project kinda blew up on me
as the ideas started coming to mind.

Come to think of it, on top of all the stuff I mentioned earlier,
I think its going to get its own trailer too.

Since its getting to look like an expedition truck,
it will need an Overlander style trailer I think. "thumbsup"

There are some killer examples in this free issue download
of The Overland Journal.....

Looking forward to it ... After I get my top built I was thinking some type of trailer also..something like the woodsman.

If you do a build thread make sure to link it here so I dont miss it,
or at least post up some pics here.

Would love to see what you come up with "thumbsup"

Dont mind me, Im just looking up 1:1 ideas to copy.
And this study/look-up/research stuff slows down a build by MILES!

So give me a few "minutes" to decide what fits best on this build.....

I said I wanted an OEM type front bumper on this rig,
but JEEZE!, I never expected it to be so plain......

I AM DEAD SERIOUS!
this is the bucket dump, cheapest front bumper, they come with
out of the factory:

d90_front_bumper.jpg

I kinda want something a bit more detailed, but I LOVE the BASIC
"screw you, learn to drive" look of this little I-beam,
rounded-edged POsHIT!

Sorry, but it has me LMFAO!

Bet it gets the job done too, tho............

Dont ask my why, but with that tiny little front bumper,
it reminded me of this pic. (?)

Its sort of a 'Dont matter how tuff you think you are,
there is still a pecking order no matter where your
Big-Bad-ASSED Rig goes, even your Dingo!

GET IN LINE, YOH! You ain't special around here no more..........

What thickness styrene do you recommend me using to make a full length top? I'm hoping to make it strong enough so that WHEN I roll it over it won't crack to pieces. I'll add reinforcements internally as much as possible and try and tie it into the rollcage so it will just be transferring an impact vs. absorbing it...

thanks!
