Food/Cooking

The kitchenaids won't last under the use I would put it under. The gears are too weak and the motor is reostat controlled instead of having a true gear box. I am doing 6 quarts of dough at a time. And you should only fill up a mixer half way with heavy dough mix so that is another issue with kitchenaid, not enough capacity. Also since hobart sold kitchenaid to wasserstrom the bean counters changed the gears from machined into cast.

I just use mine to make mashed potatoes and whipped cream in the bowl. Meat grinding, and making snausages with attachments. Light duty compared dough.

One of these days (no time soon I hope) I will inherit my moms, which was my grandma's. Bought some time in the early '50s and still going strong. It "looks" like mine other than color, but I am pretty sure will never die.

The older mixers, as long as they say kitchenaid on them have comparable parts with the new ones but, the new parts are weaker than the old parts. So your grandmas should outlast the one you have.

Yep, Kitchen Aid. Looks like this but in an ugly ass puke green:

I know it will outlast mine. It is over 60 years old already and still going strong. My grandma used it daily for 30 years, and my mom at least once a week since she got it.

Are they similar enough that I could transplant the guts into my much more aesthetically pleasing (to me) Cobalt Blue one?

Yep you can transplant the parts.

I like the retro look of the old ones.

There is an old one just like that one on our local craigslist for $75

The Captain Hook attachment is scary.

That puke green color is totally classic. Made me laugh.

I like the styling of the old ones with the metal handle at the front, I just can't stand the color of the one in my family... Any color but that puke green...

I just want a stand mixer. I'm pretty sure I'd use it once every 2 years but I still want one

I have done a lot of searching on various websites about stand mixers. One mixer still receives good reviews and that's Hobart N50"thumbsup" . AC motor and 3 speed tumbler gear mechanism... totally reliable.
The modern kitchen stand mixers are funny!. Not one is upto the mark. All are a compromise in some way or the other. But prices are as if they are topnotch.

The hobart n50 is a really good mixer but does not have the capacity I need. The price is also through the freekn roof. If I could pick the one I wanted, cost no object I would get the hobart 120 which is a 12 quart. It is the perfect size for me but the price on even the used hobarts are more than the general gem110 brand new.

Used a brand new out of the box kitchenaid 5qt at work today and it strained with the initial mix of cake. So there is no chance it would hold up to stiff pizza dough and last.

We made 6 cakes today and that took three batches in the kitchenaid.

The 10qt mixer will make 4 pizzas

Like an arm or a leg?

Damn! That's huge for home use.

My first job was in an Italian joint, we had a giant Hobart in the back room for dough. Large enough that 14 year old thin me could fit in the bowl. No way I could get 42 year old, physically broken fat me into anything other than a sofa or wide truck seat though...

My kitchen just got a bad case of mixer envy...

Those pies look good too! Gots ta luv da deeeeeeeeep dish! I think I got even fatter just looking at them.
