Turtle's Modified XV-01

This might help...

http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/rally/407921-how-about-list-tires-available-rally.html

For street tires look at the dynamite pre mounted sets, HPI X patterns, HPI V grooves and for a little more aggressive "all around" tire look at the HPI Pirelli T. For HPI the D compound is harder and the S compound is pretty soft. The dynamite tires are a little softer then the HPI D compounds.

In the past, racing on tarmac I have used HPI X patterns in the front and HPI pirelli T (D compound in the rear) This season I am going to run Pirelli Ts in all four corners, but will be running the S compound in the front (soft) and the D compound in the rear.

If you want anymore details on any of these tires just post up. "thumbsup"

Well hopefully this rally craze takes off again like it did in the 80's with Tamiya's new XV-01 cross over rally, then Traxxas with Rally, Thunder Tiger, HPI WR8 nitro and flux, Kyosho has always been rally game not exactly off road, but most Kyosho's can easily be modded to compete mild off road. I see the SCB market dying out with Losi pulling out their XXX-SCB with only AE's SC10b RS which I turned into a dune buggy now lol.

Some large company really just needs to START FREAKING charging so much unnecessary items to squeeze every penny out of you on an RTR kit. 80% of buggies, cars, trucks, are either ARTR to RTR nowadays. Now how are supposed to know if Joe-Shmoe had been drinking the night before showed up work hung over and missed a critical piece of your expensive toy?

I consider RC's like my firearms. My life depends on them. If some doofus forgot to put in a simple take down pin, spring, entire trigger assembly LOL, slide?, don't even think about the firing pin.....which is why I prefer kits. IF you can't handle a complecated kit...no problem start off small like a TT-01 and work your way up! OR buy a cheapie roller take it all apart and reassemble it without instructions. After that you know what part goes where.....only issue maybe screw lengths as a reference off the manual.

I have no idea where you were going with that tangent of a post. I do prefer kits, but i would never have gotten that far into the hobby without starting with RTR.

A little update. The car again drove well for the stage rally race last weekend. But after the race we had a mock tarmac race and that was pretty rough on the car.

I don't know how this happened, but the rear mud guard broke, which caused my underbody to ride up and allow dirt in.

I have broken a couple of these front bumper braces, so this wasn't a big surprise after all the hard slams to the front end my car took.

And thats it!

Now onto the awesome, I have not been this excited and gitty in a while. :ror:

Some 20 year old vintage glory in the box!

And inside, the box was packed full of awesome!

Plus the original manual and several extras.

Even the original decals where in the box still unopened. Plus the window masks.

Plus tons of extra decals, tiger strips for another Escort Cosworth body, the German Subaru decals, Peugeot 206 decals and tons more that I still have not identified.

And we are still going, the original 2 piece rally wheels and some gold Tamiya wheels with rubber.

Plus two rally interiors with driver parts.

Tons of Tamiya body posts, plus extra mirrors and a spoiler for a WRC Toyota Corolla I think.

Made out like a bandit? I think so! :ror:

I love this body, not sure if I have it in me to paint and run it though... I'm thinking about it. :ror:

Love that body!

I just got done with my box art build XV-01 I am pumped. girlfriend wont let me drive it till christmas eve! haha

I dont know anyone else into rc, specifically rally, but man does it look like its going to be a fun kit.

Thanks for all the effort you put into this thread. It has helped me alot.

Nice box of stuff! What chassis is that?

Do you mind me asking what you paid?

Thanks! The box is from 1993, And I am pretty sure it is a TA-01 chassis that it came on. I didn't get the chassis with it though, but I think thats what is on the box. It doesn't actually say what car it is. Apparently it didn't matter back in 1993. :ror:

I'm not sure I should say what I paid, but I got an incredibly good deal. Unrealistically good deal. :ror:

Wow!!! 😱😳😁... You are a very lucky guy, apparently with some amazing friends!!! That box of goodies is practically priceless! There is no emoticon to display the amount of jealousy on my face... 😜 Good score my man...

Thanks and thats how I feel about it! :ror: My love of rally is well known and every now and then I get amazing people offering me things. I was told about the body and told him I would take it. But I had no idea it was going to be full to the top of amazing things, that really, just don't exist anymore. I really want to run the two piece wheels too, but not sure... I have never seen them before and might be destroying a Unicorn... Normally I wouldn't care, but the box and everything in it are things I will never get to see or touch again... I have never been in this situation before. :ror:

I vote you get a donor car(era specific) of course, and keep that rare and pristine piece of history on the shelf for future photo sessions, and maybe a few light runs to get some moving shots of that awesome body and wheel combo? It's not likely you will ever find a new body like that again? If you did, it'd probably fetch a 500$+ price tag... With your extreme passion for rally, that thing deserves a Perminant stall in your garage... Just my opinion...

I know this is a random question, but what offset wheels do you run with a factoy xv01 body?

Im just getting ready to order some new wheels and tires, and dont know what offset.

thanks.

If you look through this thread it will help with the choices. All the white and gold wheels that I have used are 0 offset, the black wheels are +2. Color coded for your convenience. :ror:

thanks man, I already got a spare set of rally blocks. think im going to order some of those pirelli tires and maybe a set of the x ptern tires.
and a set of drift tires just for some giggles. Also got to get the aluminum suspension mounts, as I broke the front one on the first pack through it today.

The X pattern tires are pretty grippy on tarmac, but I think those Pirelli tires are worthless.

I painted up one of the interiors I got the other day. This will sit on the underbody for my XV-01.

I actually found a use for the perellis'... We have an indoor drifting track at the LHS. The floor is comprised of 50% VC tile (9" squares), and 50% ultra smooth concrete. The perellis' are a point and shoot tire on this smooth surface. They will still break loose and drift with enough RPM's, but hook up extremely good on such a hard surface. The average lap times are 11-13 secs with hpi x-patterns, and I'm sure there parellis' are turning like 9 sec laps... They won't let me run em on race nights, so I haven't got an official time with them. But they are awesome on super smooth concrete, and I'm sure they would do equally as good on blue groove clay tracks, I just don't have one local to me to test that theory...

Well I went through the XV-01 and found a few parts that needed to be replaced after our rough tarmac race a couple of weeks ago.

I lost drive last weekend and knew exactly what the issue was. These top gears are good for about a year and then they spin the pin. The front and rear top gears have been replaced in the last month or so. So I shouldn't have to replace them again until next fall. :ror:

The A arm didn't "technically" break, but the ball that holds the sway bar rod end broke off so I replaced that as well. Also the "motor mount brace" was broken as well, I'm not sure this piece does a whole lot anyway, but it got replaced as well.

And finally I replaced another bumper brace, I have broken a lot of these so I am not too surprised about this.

Most of the car got a thorough cleaning and I am just waiting on new mud guards to come in so I can replace the broken one and everything should be all fixed and shiny new. :ror:

Lookin great again. How's the chassis holding up, do you ever envisage needing to replace it?

Thanks. The chassis seems fine, very, very scratched, but that is it. I really don't see the chassis ever breaking, it is a pretty strong piece. Even so maybe later this year I will put a new one on, just for giggles and to freshen up the car.
