Finally got back into the comp crawlers last August, I picked up an old sporty from a local club member getting out. I ran it for most of the 2015/2016 season before I had to steal parts from it for scale nationals. Bob "Solitaire" was nice enough to let me borrow his spare sporty (Sucker punch chassis and AXR10 axles. I was really impressed with it and I've now pulled the trigger on the sucker punch chassis.

Here's how the old sporty sat before I tore it apart last night:

I'll be keeping:
-Drivelines
-Over/under gears
-RCBros knuckle weights
-VP Wraith Knuckles and C-Hubs
Everything else will be going in a box on the shelf lol

I'll start building up the new axles hopefully this week. I'll be using:
-SCX10/AX10 housings
-Creation Fab XR width Delrin splined tubes
-XR10 lockouts and rear shafts
-Destroy plate from winnerone23
-Barry's RC Carbon rear 4-link plate

And a sneak preview of the new chassis:

The guys over at 5th Dimension knocked it out of the park with this chassis!
Thanks Dan and Chris!

Check them out:

Old sporty disassembled and put into a box:

Parts I'll be salvaging:

Actually probably won't even be using the servo (it's a 7980 and I'll probably just run a 7950).

Shocks all ready to go:

All the axle housings, shafts and creation fab tubes:

I got this mini driver handle and 2mm tool from LURC a little while ago:

I really like it and almost never use my Losi 2mm tool anymore (I swore by that tool up until I purchased this one to try out)

Axles mostly assembled:

Nice Scot, good to see you building a decent sporty, Nice parts you got going so far. Look forward to seeing this done and on the rocks.

My link guy got my links made this weekend!
A few shots of them mocked up:

I should hopefully have all the parts back by this weekend and can start assembling the chassis.

Sounds like my shocks need some TLC as it sounds like some are binding up.

Chassis and Links arrived!!

I'm stoked! Almost want to start working on this more than fixing up my scalers for Sunday.

Some minor shock maintenance per Dan's recommendation (completely wrong pivot balls, not sure how that happened).

Bad ones out:

Grabbed two Traxxas ones:

And all set:

Next step for the shocks is to take them apart and add a pivot ball under the piston.

Traded for some VooDoo's and DLux wheels:

Thanks David!

Assembling the front links:

And more or less put together:

Assembling the rear links:

And more or less together:

All ready to put onto the sucker punch:

And assembled, just need to fix the shocks and put those on:

I've got the front axle pretty much completely put together minus the tie rod. Rear axle needs some work (I basically threw it together and sent it out for links). I think I'll do the shocks and cut out/get the body mounts figured out tonight so I can paint the body tomorrow.

Five days and counting.....

You'll be happy with the progress I made tonight.

Front axle all together, minus tie rod:

Working on the rear axle:

Rear axle complete:

Chassis, links and axles were ready, just had to get the shocks ready. First step, take em apart:

Second step, put a traxxas pivot ball under the piston:

Third step, assembled them:

Threw the shocks on the chassis:

Teaser photo:

Decided I might as well cut the body out:

After some cutting with the lexan scissors:

Went back and bent a tie rod out of a traxxas push rod I had in my link box:

Decided to put in some mechanical bump stops, grabbed some ackerman arms, couple pivot balls and a screw and nut and came up with these:

And installed:

Laying it all out before I start assembling it:

I always find it easier to assembled with the chassis upside down, so upside down it goes:

Rear axle on:

Front axle on, and we have a semi slider:

Another teaser photo:

I think more trimming is required. :lmao:

Put the transmission in and threw on the wheels for the complete roller status:

Electronics should be here Wednesday or Thursday and I'll wire it up real quick.

Weight (missing ESC, BEC and RX):

Not light by any means but not bad for using no aluminum hardware or pivot balls. Once I get the electronics in I'll see where I'm at. I'd like to get it down to below 4 pounds.

Tomorrow I'll try and get the body mounted, trimmed and masked.

Better hurry only 4 more days to get LITTLE SUCKER ready for the rocks:happy:

Almost done!!

Got the body mounted:

Might do it a little differently next time, I think I mounted it too far back and didn't drop the rear of the body enough.

Trimmed the body some more:

Got it masked and ready for paint:

Might add another little mask for a simple two tone paint job (you guys can probably guess which colors) :lmao:

Wasn't a lot of distance between the electronics plate and the hood at full compression, dropped the electronics plate even more and spaced up the body a bit. I'll find out tomorrow when the electronics arrived. I also started to explore options for mounting the RX in case the electronics plate wasn't low enough.

Some possible locations:

This one won't actually work, as the drag link hits it on full lock to the right.

Yup just when U think Ur close to being done all the little fitment bug's jump up and bite Ya
But that's all the fun in building your own not just buying a RTR :lmao:

Just wait til U get the bug to build a Super thankfully I have a machine shop out in the garage:mrgreen:

Yep, though it is way worse on scalers. Putting this sporty together has been relatively easy up until this electronic plate issue.

I think I'd buy a super over building one  I know a guy :lmao:

Painting time!

All ready to go:

Now time to paint it with some Lexan paint that has to be at least 10 years old.

First laid down a few coats of:

Then a coat of:

Then backed it with:

Removed the masking line and hit it with a few coats of:

Removed the window masks and this is what it looks like:

Overall I'm really pleased with how it turned out. It isn't perfect, but for using 10+ year old paint and it being some what of a rush job I'd say it went really well.

Now the hardest part, how to do the stickers.

Option one, one black 5TH D sticker on the hood:

Or option two, one blue 5TH D sticker on each side:

Tomorrow the electronics arrive and I'll get it wired up and ready to go for Saturday.

Went home for lunch today and tinkered with the electronics a bit.

I think with the FXR decased, I can get the FXR and RX on the electronics plate and have the body miss touch it at full compression. I'm still not sure where I'm going to mount the BEC, I may mount it to the back of the servo or possibly under the destroy plate.

Another issue that came up is the castle link won't read this BEC, but it powers on. I'm not sure what voltage it is set at so I'll most likely be digging up another one to use.
