Rant Thread

FUCK FALL! 🖕

Autumn started on Sunday, September 22nd. That was 4 days ago. Since then, it has rained 3 days. The forecast isn't looking any better.

Fall is cold, rainy, windy, leaves are everywhere, motorcycle riding season comes to an end, kids go back to school so sicknesses come back around and are everywhere, school busses clog up the streets, etc. I hate this shitty season with a passion!

Oh, but everything looks so pretty. All that pretty shit is dead people...

Meh... I am more of a "Fuck Winter" kind of guy.

I miss winters in San Diego, no snow. Throughout summer I look at my snow thrower and ATV snow plow with resentment and dread, knowing that winter is, in fact, coming. If it weren't for my job, I would live somewhere with little to no snow.

Fall is just winter without the joy of snow. Cleaning up snow sucks, but you can have a ton of fun in it with ATVs.

Funny how our location dictates so much of our feelings regarding weather. Obviously I'm really envious of Jato and people up north/ to the east because it's just so hot and dry here so much of the year. If nothing else, mornings/ evenings have recently been cool-ish but God... no rain and constant daytime temps in the upper 90's... I need more rain, snow, and cold.

Yeah, been trying to convince the wife to move out of CA. Sadly the weather here is a real anchor. Mid Nevada border with CA isn't too bad snow wise if you find the right place, and summers aren't like death valley. So there's at least a half win in that aspect. But I sure as hell do not want to be clearing 12+ inches of snow at any given point.

Shipping packages in the US. Of maybe just RC4WD's shipping. Just ordered a new Miller Sports truck with a set of tires and the cheapest available shipping was $98.79 for USPS 3to5 day shipping.

When did shipping become 20% the cost of the truck?

When companies are too cheap to include it for free with an order over a certain dollar amount...

Out of curiousity I just checked what RC4WD would charge to ship to me (northern California). The cheapest option was for FedEx ground at $20.10, most expensive option was $85. $20 is probably as high as I'm comfortable going but only if there arent better alteratives.

I always try to buy from Amian or RPP where shipping would be free for a purchase that large. If they dont have it it may be worth waiting for it to re-stock.

So I put the door trim panels on the Chevelle, bought assembled panels and they fit like socks on a chicken!
If I push it tight it's either too long on the bottom by 3/4" or leaves no gap for the window.
This is what you get for almost $400 and"Made in USA".🤬
Holy cow that fitment is terrible... Where did you source them from? These weren't from OPGI were they?

That sucks! Made in USA used to mean quality. Now it is an excuse to gouge for subpar products. Return that crap!

Ok, my bad - can I retract a rant?
I totally forgot the brackets at the top of the door are adjustable. 🥴
All good now....

Sometimes all you can do is rant at yourself...

Last night I was adding a Panda Touch display to my P1S printer, seemed like a fairly easy exercise. There is a USB port in the printer to provide the display with power, and there is a handy-dandy hole for the cable to come out of the printer, all is good. Sure... The USB-A port is in a REALLY terrible location, with little room for my hands. It took me about 15 minutes and a whole lot of my Sailor words to get it plugged in. I run the other end out of the printer and snap the cable into the retainers, I am feeling really good about this now! I go to plug the other end of the USB cable into the display's docking station, and realize the cable has a USB-micro-B connector, and the docking station has a USB-C connector. I throw out a lot more Sailor words, all directed at the jackass who put the wrong cable in the package. When I have finally resigned myself to defeat, I see a USB-A to USB-C cable in a neat bundle sitting in the display's box... a few more Sailor words and swap out the cable for the correct one. The second attempt at connecting the right USB cable into the printer still took about five minutes...

House Rant...
This year's clean and inspect on my 17 year old gas furnace did not go as expected. Just for good measure, I had another company do the inspection again. Now I am looking at $8k for a new one, or $16k to add AC and a new water heater.

Man do I feel for ya there. I'm currently renting, before deciding where to buy. I'm helping my landlord limp along a 14yr old AC/Heater, and man has it been a chore! I suspect, it's not going to make another 3 years and he's already hyperventilating about having to replace it. Not that he's overtly cheap, but here in SF Bay Area, to replace it, he's looking at an Easy $15-20K for a complete package.

I know this sucks to hear. But buy yourself the piece of mind, and drop the $16k on a full system. It's just better in the long run.

HVAC can really be a crapshoot. I've seen systems last 35+ years with little to no maint. And I've seen new ones fail under warranty.

Honestly, the single most important thing I find is the better one takes care of the condenser (cleaning the coils gently with a hose and light soap mixture, and vacuuming out the debris inside of it) the longer the outside unit lasts. As for the inside, routine cleaning and inspections go a long way.

hvac = wood stove and swamp cooler 👍
I did two dumbs buying a house in snow country... I bought 2-story, and I bought with no wood stove.

Rant on HVAC people...
I had two HVAC companies look at/clean and inspect my furnace and it was fairly clear that a good chunk of their job was to be as salesman as well. That is ok, I get it... But, it seems like I have to watch my back with these people the same way I would if I were buying a used car off a lot. The biggest kicker was with the second bid, for a new heater, water heater, and to install AC as $22K (I threw up in my mouth a little when I was shown that number). The first bid was for $10K, still high, but not unexpected. I showed the first bid to the second guy, he called his boss, and they knocked down the bid to $16k. This was supposed to make me feel like I was getting a good deal, but to me, it is still high, and why didn't they offer me the $16k bid from the get-go?
