Rant Thread

I'm partly just frustrated that I can't post pics as I'm wanting to keep documenting my rc10gt restoration... dunno if it's RCC or something on my end but damn if it's not irritating... too tech-dumb to figure it out is also aggravating.

But my rant today....

Two kids show up at my door yesterday with chocolate-bars for $2 each. I usually don't entertain anyone hocking anything at my door but I guess they caught me at the right time. But they're shy and barely able to articulate any details. So I grab a $5 and come back out on the porch... ask em what varieties they have and all they can do is show me... no words.

I get it... you're kids but damn... make an effort. Then I ask em a simple math problem... "If I get two and give you a five, how much change do you owe me?" "A dollar?" Wow... that's right. Okay... keep the change". They don't even say thank you but whatever... today's kids.

Dad is now slowly making his way closer to the porch and I wave and smile. He looks bewildered.... maybe doesn't speak English. Then ( because might as well force em to rub together a couple of brain-cells), I ask them what this is for. "School"... Well no sh!t kiddo.... I kinda guessed that. but "What SPECIFICALLY is this for??"

"Oh, it's a fund-raiser". Sigh... Good Lord... "A fund raiser FOR WHAT???".

"OOOOH.... For whoever sells the most you get a Nintendo game console."

WTF??? Really? I mean... way to go local public school that sucks up my taxes every year like Dracula on a bender at a blood bank. I remember at least two fund-raisers when I was in school... one was to help our 7th grade class to take a trip to Washington DC and at least one other was so that our class could take a field trip to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio.

Is this just the norm nowadays? A fund-raiser to get a f#@k!#g game console? I guess I'll be sure to never again donate to any school fund-raisers. I'm half tempted to call or send a letter to the school to let them know what an absolute disgrace this is and that I will NOT be supporting any fund-raisers in the future. Ugh.

Did you try Imgur? What errors are you getting when trying to attach photos?

Kids are morons, but schools and parents suck. In my day, the school's provided supplies. Now teachers supply things and/or ask for parents to bring the stuff in. Are you effing kidding me?! Where is my tax money going? I don't even have a brat in school and I pay school taxes. And you're telling me there isn't enough money for paper, pencils, books and tissues?

I've been using postimage for years.. easy to use, navigate, resize... just find whatever image, copy it then paste back to the forum. And it's free. I did that this time for my nitro thread and it worked fine for the first pics but then out of nowhere a notice would come up on RCC saying "Oops..." Some sort of problem. And another thing that makes me think that it's maybe an issue with RCC is that after it fails to post my pics, I can't log out. It's like it's buffering or something but won't allow me to log out or navigate the forum... as if I'm all of a sudden restricted access or permissions. Then eventually after however many minutes/ hours it goes back to letting me log out/ log back in and post text... but then as soon as I go back and try to post pics again... it does this all over again. I'm just not sure what's up but I need to figure out something cause it's really bugging me that I can't currently post pics.

The new RCC definitely has some new oddities. Imgur is also free FYI. I even made a thread showing how to use Imgur with the old RCC. Should mostly work with the new RCC, but feel free to PM me with any questions. Imgur also has an app. It is NOT the most intuitive site however.

I know in NC, the money for public schools continually gets siphoned off and directed to private and charter schools. One of my previous jobs was working at an accounting firm that did work for charter schools, there is so much more money being wasted giving it to private organizations than properly funding public schools. Somehow this has become a point of political contention so this is the shit the community has to deal with.

the problem is public schools suck ass
i dident want my kid indoctrinated so she went to a hippy school lol
they dident get public funds though all privately funded one of her schools was in a church basement to save money

Politics ruin everything...

There are times when you have to be bluntly honest with yourself, and you have understand and admit what you know, and what you don't know. For things that you don't, you either get educated, or you hire a professional to do those things for you. For most jobs on a submariner, to be successful you have to have a healthy dose of mechanical aptitude; being a career submariner, I would I to think I have carried a lot of that mechanical know-how with me after retiring out of the Navy. With that, I understand HVAC, however, I also understand that is a lot I don't know about it, so I leave HVAC in my home to the professionals...

Yesterday I had my HVAC system replaced; my heater and water heater were pushing 20 years old, it was time. Aside from the stress of the ridiculous amount of money a new system costs, including the AC that was added, there is also the stress of hoping the system gets installed properly.

My old heater's fresh air inlet had a damper that was mostly closed, and I was happy that the HVAC guys were just as confused as I was. Due to the addition of the AC, a lot of the plumbing had to be redone. The lead asked if I wanted the damper reinstalled. I told him that I did, and I would like to have the option to use it if I needed it. Well... he decided it was not needed and did not install it. Thankfully it was around 40*/f outside when they were testing the system. The air coming from the heater was way too low, and they were struggling to figure out why. Everything on the heater itself was working properly. The lead HVAC guy turned a little white and said I thinks I knows why the heater was not producing the proper amount of heat to the registers, and why that damper was there. I said "Cool!!! Close the damper." That is when he informed me that he decided not to reinstall it... After about 45 minutes he had the damper reinstalled and the heater producing proper temperature at the registers.

Air Conditioning... Up here in North 'ho I look at AC the same way I look at RVs, they are a nice to have, will pay a lot of money for, and something you really are going to use for a couple of weeks in the summer. Given that my wife will looking to start working from home, she saw the AC as a necessity... Overall we should save money on our utility bills. The AC unit uses about 2/3s the power of an in-window or a R2D2 AC unit, and we had four of them running at the same time in the summer.

Black Friday...

Lowes and Harbor Freight (a long with a couple of other places) sell small/tiny steel tool boxes. They were a novelty at first, but they are very useful storage on workbenches. I wanted to pick up two of these at Harbor Freight, one for my soldering bench, and one for my 3D printers.
This last Friday (not black Friday), I went into a local Harbor Freight to pick a couple of these tiny toolboxes up, the website said they were in stock.
I looked around the store for about ten minutes, and did not see any of these tool boxes, so I asked an employee where they were. He said they hadn't come in yet. I showed him the Harbor Freight website on my phone and their stock status, he just said that was a mistake...
Annoyed, I accepted the answer, and picket up a couple of items. I like Harbor Freights latex gloves, they are strong and really inexpensive. As I was checking out a manager wondered by the register and asked if I had found everything I was looking for. I told him no, and inquired about the toolboxes. He gave me the same like as the other employee. Reading the expression on my face, and followed up by telling me that they did have them, however they were not supposed to show as 'in-store' until Black Friday, and he could not sell me one until then. I told him I would pay the full price and not the sale price for the toolboxes (I wanted two), and he apologized and said he couldn't.

I don't do Black Friday. No deal is good enough for me to battle people, traffic and parking. With that, I am 100% against stores being open on Thanksgiving day. Although, I am overly thankful for those good people who keep the local grocery store open for a couple of hours on Thanksgiving day... why do we always forget the olives?

^^^ I just can't anymore. Store brand/ off-brand or I can do without. Haven't bought name-brand beverages in years either. Inflation my a$$.
I can't buy generic with some stuff - Dorito's, Heinz ketchup, sodas, iced tea, etc. The generic stuff tastes like :poop:

I didn't know Harbor Freight was getting the mini toolboxes. They do show "In-Store Only" for me. I don't do Black Friday either. F that! I'm not dealing with all those people to save $100 on a TV or something like that.

Years ago I bought a mini tool cabinet from HobbyKing. Not sure if I paid this much - I doubt it. You have to install the rollers yourself. I never used this thing. It just sits around. That's why I think all of the mini toolboxes are useless novelties to me.

With that being said, this brand called P.I.T. offers some cool mini toolboxes on scAmazon.

Wholeheartedly agree and I do buy name brand with some things... Hellman's mayo, Yoplait yogurt, Johnsonville Bratwurst, and Pace Picante sauce all come to mind. For snacks and junk I'm with ya... you can't duplicate Cool Ranch Doritos or Oreo's lol.

If it's something to go in a recipe with a bunch of other things, I can live just fine with the cheaper version. Fortunately we have a fantastic grocery here called HEB and the majority of their store brand stuff is right in line with anything name brand. In many instances I actually prefer their brand. And then they have an even cheaper in-house brand called Hill Country Fare and almost all of it that I've tried tastes great. 8oz of shredded Kraft cheese is $3.10... Hill Country Fare is $1.82.

So I got into a debate about these last week. The agreement came down to I was right. The Kobalt ones from Lowes, are nicer only due to one key thing. They sell a 3 drawer top chest, and a 2 drawer bottom. Harbor only has the 3 drawer top. :ROFLMAO: 😝

We do however also agree, they're likely all made in the same shop and just painted/branded differently.

I have one of these mini tool boxes on the bench, seems to be from the same place (branded mastercraft here) ... cheap but works and fits my needs ... I'd even probably buy another lol

Yup, not much difference.

I have one for my 3D printers, and the other is on my solder bench, and has really made good strides to uncluttering it. My one complaint about this, or, given this thread, my one rant... are the lids, they flop all of the way open. This will be fixed with about 15 minutes in Fusion 360, and about 20 minutes of print time.

No 3D printer here so I used a couple of popsicle sticks glued to back to keep the lid at least level when opened, allows me to use as a holding tray of sorts.
