Re: Its a Berg THING, You wouldn't understand. By jcboof
Update:
Well, for the past couple of weeks I've been working on my Wedge V2 Bodiless truck. I had neglected the thing quite a bit I must say as I was really excited to get going on the Wedge chassis which has been working VERY well for me lately.
Well, I decided to take some time and give this "thing" some love.
I had a weird unloading problem where either the left or right front wheel would just randomly pop up in the air at times unloading the suspension fully. I knew I could tune it out but wasn't sure where I should start.
I had been running 4mm axle nuts as spacers on my front upper links. Running the upper links with less triangulation will cause a truck to be loose. Now how loose is dependent on the amount of triangulation you take out by spacing at the axle. Some trucks are just WAY too tight as they have a TON of triangulation, But with this truck is is different. With such a narrow chassis, it doesn't leave much triangulation for the upper and lower links. The lowers are Highly triangulated because of the narrow skid but the uppers have a lower level of triangulation. By spacing the front uppers at the chassis, it gives the upper links a bit more triangulation, but it you add spacers at the axles, it somewhat cancels that out.
What I did was take out the spacers giving the front more triangulation and moved the spacers to the rear axle which had none. A little bit of axle steer on a truck is not always a good thing, but if you can learn to use it as an advantage, it works AWESOME!! By adding the spacers to the rear uppers at the axle mount, it decreased the amount of triangulation and loosened the rear end up a little.
Next, shocks. The springs I was running in the front were entirely too soft. They were the Losi Mini-T Pink springs and the Silvers were in the rear.
I moved the Silvers to the front and then since I didn't have any more mini springs, I decided to use a set of full length Losi Golds in the rear.
Finally, I had been running the truck at around 6lbs and it worked well, but I decided to lighten things up a bit. I had made a set of Clapped rovers for the Wedge build and I threw them on the Thing. The truck is weighing in at 5lbs 6oz RTR.
I am still running the stainless uppers, and if I swap them out for the TI links, I should lose at least an ounce on the chassis!!
WOW!!!!!!!! What a difference that made!! The truck is a whole new animal!! Vertical performance is just as good as before, but the truck is a whole lot more stable. Adding triangulation up front and taking a little out of the rear was the ticket to getting this thing right!
Lightening up the truck a little definitely didn't hurt either. The truck balances out a 1/4" in front of the front lower links on the chassis.
I just put two battery packs through the truck outside in 20* weather on cold rocks and this thing was unstoppable! If it works this cold, it should hopefully work in warmer weather too.
Now I am really going to have a tough time figuring out what truck I'm going to drive at the comp in Ohio this weekend!! Its a money comp and I know that this truck will be IN THE MONEY, just don't know If I will!! LOL!!
Heres a couple crappy Iphone pics! LOL!! I'll get my better cam out on tuesday and get some nice Outdoor shots!!
