Its a Berg THING, You wouldn't understand. By jcboof UPDATE!!!!!

Re: Its a Berg THING, You wouldn't understand. By jcboof

Exactly."thumbsup" But... I don't have the equipment required to turn them down.

I've been waiting on a set of tubes from CCD for almost 3 months now but I'm getting a little worried, he might not be making any more.

I'm thinking about getting ahold of Dlux and having him turn my tubes down to accept the axial c's and be done with it or just buy a set of his tubes. I'm not terribly concerned about the weight savings as much as I am clearance.

Did you forget about me? I have the cnc lathe the hand lathe and cnc mill. Oh and I'm not far from you. you could even stop up here and work on it here.

Got some goodies!!!!

35T Torquemasters with skewed arms and laydown brush hoods. Should be NICE!!!!! My BWD MotorSavrs should keep them safe and sound!

And the Sidewinder Micros!! THESE THINGS ARE TINY!!!!! Should make for a clean install!"thumbsup"

Is this THING gonna try to win the next comp...tired of beating that old CF truck you had and giving you an excuse!

Well, rather than documenting every single nut and bolt and how they went together, I figured I'd show ya the finished product!

Everything went well with the build and I'm VERY happy with the end results.

Ride height at the front of the skid is 2.5" and 3.0 at the back. Fully drooped out it sits right at 3.25" at the front and 3.5" at the rear of the skid. They way I have the shocks built are pretty simple.
Fronts are full 4" Big Bores with a 1/4" external limiter. Losi mini t "PINK" springs on the fronts with 35wt oil and 3-hole pistons.

Rears are limited 1/4" internally with no external limiting. Springs are Losi Mini T "Silver" springs with 35wt oil and 3-hole pistons.

The front shocks seem to react a little slower mostly because they are not limited in length internally so the shock piston is able to run all the way to the bottom of the bore. Front shocks in my trucks normally react a little slower to combat a sloppy front end. Its still very loose but not too loose.

The front end sags quite a bit, but its not a bad thing. This gives the truck much better stability when moving from gate to gate and it also stays pretty planted on sidehills with no unloading as of yet.

My 35T skewed arm Torquemasters are SICK!!!!!!! WOW! I have never had a motor like this PERIOD!! They have TONS of torque and speed but are almost as smooth as the crawlmasters on the low end. VERY IMPRESSED!!! THANKS HOLMES HOBBIES!!!!!

The Micro Sidewinders are really nice too. The low speed resolution that Castle is known for and the crazy dragbrake is great, Very happy with them also!"thumbsup"

Re: Its a Berg THING, You wouldn't understand. By jcboof

My electronics are not the prettiest sight out there right now. I decided to leave all the wires full length and leave the switches on the ESC's. Castle has a very sensitive arming sequence when you plug the batteries in. If you cut the switches, when you plug the battery in, you have to be VERY careful to correctly make the connection. If there is any sparking or if you have try several times to connect the battery, you run the risk of resetting the speedo's to factory default (yes, its happened to me). So rather than risk that, I decided to leave the switches so there was no risk of arcing while plugging the battery in.

One of the main reasons why the wiring is a rats nest, is because I will be moving the electronics from one chassis to another on a regular basis. I'm in process of building a new V2 Bodiless Wedge chassis too, and I want to make it easy to just unbolt the "Thing" from the axles and bolt in the Wedge chassis. That way I can do proper testing on both trucks with essentially the exact same electronics setups.

I too love the skewed arm stuff. Rig is coming together nicely.

Nice job. Its looking very good. 2.5" sitting  and droops out to 3.25".
That's alot of suspension sag. Is that what you are comfortable with or is that something new you are trying?

I kinda thought I'd try it out. On downsides is it would appear to make the rea more likely to unload in certain situations but I haven't really had too much time on it yet to verify this. So far it feels very planted.
I did not set the truck up to have that much sag, it just kinda happened and I figured I'd give it a shot.

Looks great man! Can't wait to see it in action next week! "thumbsup"

Re: Its a Berg THING, You wouldn't understand. By jcboof

WOW!! Kevin, that looks great!!!! Exactly what I was after. Damn, Now I gotta get the cases shaved and polished!! LOL!!"thumbsup"

Had my first comp yesterday with the new chassis. I ended up in 3rd place due to driver error. The truck performed great as it did everything I asked it to. It seemed very stable and predictable. There were tons of knarly holes and tire pinching spots and I found that the truck liked to unload the front end a little in places. I am going to work on the front shocks a little as I think it is where the problem lies.

The front shocks are a little slow to react and the springs are a touch too soft.
I'm going to lighten the oil to 27.5wt and try the losi red springs up front. Hopefully this will allow the front end to move easier and not unload so fast.

Forward traction was great and the truck felt very well balanced.

As of right now the truck weighs in at 6lbs flat RTR. I'm hoping that with the machined tubes and switching out the upper links to Ti, I'll be able to drop it down into the 5lb 12oz range.

I've always been a big advocate of running 6oz per wheel heavier in the front but I'm gonna try 5oz and see how I like it. I'm also going to try to make some type of knuckle weights up front in the 2oz range.
I ran knuckle weights in my XR but never really liked the feel of them. But I can see how taking a little weight out of the wheels is a benefit.

Thanks Brian , so far so good on the truck right now. I'm pretty happy with how it drives and it seems every bit as capable as the trucks I've drove in the past. You oughtta try one of these things out!

Re: Its a Berg THING, You wouldn't understand. By jcboof

Got my tubes back from Klabeaume the other day and they were so damn shiny I couldn't leave the cases alone so I decided to polish them up a bit too along with a little shave job!
Kevin did one hell of a good job on these and I can wait to send him my rears for the axial lockouts I'm going to try!!

Thanks Kevin!!!!

On my rears. I decided to leave them full diameter but I drilled them out to 3/8" inside diameter to shave a little weight! I'll just be turning the c's off to accept the axial lockouts when I'm ready for them. That is unless he can shave a little more off the other diameter and still be left with a safe thickness.
