Well, Long time member but inactive. Purchased a RUkus 2wd back in 2014 and took a break. Now years later I am more into crawling then speed so looking for another 1/10 crawler. I do not even live in Bama anymore and Live in SC now.

Hi,
I’m about as new as can get to RC. Didn’t do it before and came back kinda thing, just new. This summer in August at the local big car show I was advised by my 8 year old they had an RC event, and an accompanying RC car show. I had an opportunity to talk with a guy there and he was super nice and answered my battery of questions. I knew there was hobby following with RC, but until that day didn’t understand the depth to it, and amazed would be an understatement. So my 8 year old being an 8 year old was pumped about a Traxxas, and that got onto the Christmas menu. I ordered two and we both now have a TRX4m with the Defender body, today I ordered first aftermarket upgrades. Slowly wrapping my head around all this and have miles to go still. Small beans to the dedicated pros and hobbyists I know but it’s a start into the most legit RC I have personally ever had. Today I milled around in the back yard on a small hill in about 1 of snow and had absolute blast with it, I can see my next something coming soon. It’s all the fun of off road without shovels, pulling cable or misery of welding a CA mount back on. See I’ve been around built Jeeps for 25 years now, 80 percent of that now has been Grand Cherokees from ‘93 to ‘04, I’ve had about every configuration of one at some point, I don’t wheel much anymore because honestly it’s just cost prohibitive, since Covid parts and fuel costs have kept it lean, not a matter of affording it, matter of just not interested in paying to play. Most of my genuine off-road is done with ATVs trailered somewhere or behind my house, aside from that my other hobby is archery which is a rabbit hole and the one entrance caved in on itself so no coming back out of that. These forums will help, hopefully a lot. I don’t have FB or IG anymore and haven’t for several years now. Anyway glad to be here.
Welcome to the site! The TRX-4M is a great start into hobby-grade RC crawling. You and your son can have great crawling fun indoors in the winter as well as outside with those mini rigs.

I love ATVs! Sadly I sold mine a few years ago as I lost all my riding buddies to marriages. Post up a thread with your trucks!

Welcome to activeness! You should have some great crawling down there. What type of rig do you want? Hardcore rock crawler or trail rig? Scale street truck or something like a buggy?

Welcome back and welcome to the world of crawling and trail running!

Hiya. Newbie here. Not to RC. Been at it since building my first Tamiya Blackfoot in 1985. Or as far back as 1973 when I got a Cox Nitro Buggy for Xmas. The Cox wasn't really an RC, as it was more of fill it full of nitro. Start it and case it until it hit something and stalled or roll over and run out of fuel. My how things have changed.

More recently or @ 5-10 years ago, I did buy a couple early Axial SCX's and a TRX-4 Defender when they came out. Sold everything and now getting the itch again. So now just here to peruse these forums and try and get a feel for what new rig I want to get this spring.

Cheers

Welcome aboard. My first RC was a Cox PT-19 Flight Trainer with .049 engine. That was back in '74-'75 I'd guess. Not exactly "kid friendly" lol and because of the fuel, I wasn't allowed to fire it up unsupervised. I was maybe 6-7 yrs old at the time.

Welcome to the site!

I loved those Cox engines! My dad had a Cox helicopter that was similar when I was a young kid. You filled it with fuel and chased it down when the tiny tank ran dry.

The TRX-4 is still a great rig. Vanquish also makes great stuff. Lots of options out there these days. Wintertime is perfect for building if you decide to get a kit rather than an RTR.

Not sure really I want a trail rig like a truck or jeep 1/10 scale, something bigger for bigger terrain.
Then maybe a 2.2 rig. Not sure what's all 2.2 these days. Or you could spend a lot and get an SCX6 which is 1/6th scale with 2.9" wheels and tires.

Finally got a truck. Lightly used TRX4 sport for Xmas.
Congrats! That is a great truck with a massive aftermarket so you can build it anyway you'd like when that time comes. Or just keep it stock and have fun that way!

I’m really looking at a scx10 at this moment I like the base camp and deadbolt. But I also have to budget so I’ll prob end up with it in a few weeks.

Of all the SCX10's, I think the II is the best which would be the Deadbolt. I don't like my SCX10 III and the overly complicated transmission. The Base Camp has a simpler transmission though and should be fine. Axial has a massive aftermarket, but just know their out of the box quality is pretty average to low. Before spending your hard earned money, don't forget to at least investigate the rigs from Traxxas (TRX-4 Sport) and Vanquish (few options).

Do not hesitate to PM me if you need help! And if you have questions, post up a thread as well. When you decide on a truck, it's time for a build thread! 😁

Hello Hello, noob23 here from the So. Ore. Area and just found rc crawlers after many moons off of indoor carpet racing TC-3’s. Finally found a new jam and am looking to get my first 1/24th as I don’t have the room yet for the big rigs… yet.

Welcome to the site!

The most popular 1/24 is the SCX24 because it’s cheap and has a massive aftermarket. I personally don’t like my mostly stock Deadbolt. I much prefer my slightly modified and more scale 1/18 Traxxas TRX-4M Chevy. The SCX24 is barely above toy grade out of the box IMO. Redcat Ascent-18 is another 1/18 scale to checkout. I’m not a Redcat fan, but I do like the look of those trucks. I don’t have personal experience with one.

1/10 is the best size for outdoor.

1/18 is a compromise for indoor and some outdoor.

1/24 is indoor only.

The Scx one twenty four is perfectly fine outdoors. I live within sight of miles of rocky coastline and I drive mine on those beautiful volcanic rocks all the time.
It doesn’t take much to make an Scx good. My buddy has a basecamp with a cheap servo and shocks and a brass wheels and tires combo from Injora and he kills it. The best mod is the driver mod.

Aloha!

I'm Jason or Dr. Tiki and I am currently living in Las Vegas, NV.

I used to race 1/8 Nitro On Road competitively back in early 2000's, but have been out of it for quite awhile. I have watched RC Rock Crawlers for a number of years after purchasing my 1:1 Jeep, but my interest in RC's always wavered back and forth.

I have found recently that I am starting to crave one. Something that I can take out when out in my jeep, play in the desert at the camp site, or in the backyard and in the house.

I was thinking of a large scale crawler at first but I find myself drawn towards mini/micro as my first crawler, currently leaning towards a SCX24 because of the aftermarket parts.

I'm just starting my serious research into it and I still don't know what I want except for something that has decent aftermarket upgrades availability and a platform that's upgradeable, though I'm not opposed to two crawlers.

I kept my old radio (JR Propo R-1), receivers and servos but I have a feeling that they are vastly outdated and un-useable. So I can see myself gettin a RTR kit for my first crawler and then upgrading the electronics first. I think after that, I'll just drive it and let the crawler tell me what needs to be updated next.

I dont have any pictures of my old car due to a hard drive failure, but this is what I used to race (pic stolen from internet)

@Dr. Tiki - Welcome to RCC

If looking for advice, I might steer clear of the scx24... It's a fun little rig for what it is but unless you HAVE to keep it small... limited funds, limited space, primarily indoors, etc... I think you'll be happier with a 1:18 or 1:10 size rig.

I like my scx24... again, for what it is. And yeah... lots of aftermarket parts out there. But at least for me and for some others, the limitations sort of dampen the long-term thrill. Some people do find the opposite to be true and have plenty of enjoyment running the scx24 indoors/ outdoors but unless you're fairly sure that the small size is going to scratch your crawling itch for a long time to come, you may find it sitting idle on the shelf after a short honeymoon phase.

Also keep in mind that working on, modifying, and upgrading an scx24 can get old for some of us. The hardware is also insanely small and can be frustrating to hassle with. Of course your run-time is greatly reduced as well compared to a larger crawler so that may also be worth considering. One thing that's pretty cool with the 1:24 scale crawlers is the ability to make and modify your own indoor or outdoor course at home so that may be a factor in your decision.

Traxxas makes a very cool and capable TRX4M that is 1:18 scale and it has a ton of aftermarket and manufacturer support. It's a little large to run exclusively indoors but its size makes it a good choice on a budget and on all kinds of terrain outdoors. Like the scx24 it's small enough that you can toss it in a backpack and go. But of course your run time will be longer than with a 1:24 crawler and you'll have more choices where to use it. Redcat also has a 1:18 crawler called the Ascent which a lot of folks seem to be pretty happy with... Maybe worth looking into as well.

Obviously with a 1:10 the choices are limitless in terms of basically everything... upgrades, body types, support, etc, etc. Traxxas, Associated, Vanquish, and Axial are leading the pack with their offerings in this size category. I've been extremely satisfied with almost everything about my Traxxas TRX4 rigs from the standpoint of quality of components, performance, aftermarket and manufacturer support, and wrench-ability. They are fun rigs right out of the box and much more so after adding personal touches and modifications.

You touched on how and where you want to use your rig and that's an important part of the equation. A larger rig is more ideal in a setting where you want a long run time and maybe want to get some exercise in the process or if you have an endless amount of rocky areas to explore... and they're great if you have lots of trails/ wooded areas and enjoy getting outdoors for a few hours at a time. But if you just have some smaller rock-piles or outcroppings close to home and don't have a lot of time to run an R/C rig than you may be just as content with a 1:24 scale. From what you mentioned though, I think you may have a hard time covering all your bases with a "one size fits all" crawler and I feel like you might be happier with a 1:18 as opposed to a 1:24... imho.

Fortunately, this forum has all kinds of people running all kinds of rigs so you should find any questions that you might have, appropriately and honestly answered. Good luck on your search... oh and btw, as a guy currently resurrecting an old RC10GT, gotta say I love the old days of nitro!

Welcome to the site, Jason!

I'd avoid the SCX24 because it's so small, barely above toy-grade out of the box, and just not a capable or high-quality rig. Avoid 1/24th scale all together and get something at least 1/18th scale like the TRX-4M. Those are much higher quality out of the box. They also look way more scale and can be built to whatever you like because the aftermarket for those is also massive.

There are other 1/18 vehicles from FMS and Redcat that you can check out. The HPI looks nice, but that is just a re-brand of another vehicle. If I remember the brand, I will reply back here.

1/10th scale is the sweet spot, but it would definitely take up room keeping it in your vehicle.
