Both work quite well. We have a group of u4 racers using 4500kv 540 on 3s with no heat issues.

Is the can on the xl bigger than the pro4 can? Or same size length wise? I'm asking cause I was able to install the pro4 without cutting on the battery tray don't wanna have to cut it

The xl is designed to bolt right into the yeti. No cutting needed, but it's a close fit. The 540 has lots of room.

Hey John, just trying to get the 2200kv Puller dialed in. Where is the 8k setting you keep talking about? Do you feel 54/15 gearing is too high? I'm just missing a bit of the top end wheel speed I'm used to with my normal 58/13 gearing and the 3300 kv Pro4. I'm kinda wishing I'd have got the 3500....

What kind of timing advance do you think would be safe in the cheat mode? I think I have it set to kick in around 10,000 rpm with 10 degrees. I know there are a lot of variables with this set up. Thanks! Tim

Either bump up voltage, or higher KV is really what you need. These motors don't respond to cheat mode like a two pole, it doesn't get as great of rpm boosts. smart mode with 10 degrees is a fine setting.

I ran it on 4s for 5 min or so, and it ripped pretty good. I just don't have battery space for a very big 4s battery (plus I have 12+ 3s batteries). I'm going to try it out tomorrow on a little trail run and some rock crawling and see how I like it with the 54/15 gearing. I'll temp it too and see how things look. Is there much of a difference on the bottom end between the 2200 and 3500?

I can't tell a difference of low end or startup between the KVs when they are running the same max RPM and gearing. The 2200 may feel smoother on startup right now, but only because you have more trigger pull for less wheelspeed. With enough throttle control the 3500 with more geardown will have an edge in both realms.

I ended up picking up a 2200, as I have a 3500 in my yeti and couldn't imagine that much power in a crawler..

Keep us updated on what you end up doing, I'm still a bit out from install.

So is the only difference from the puller pro from the standard and the xl is the size?

So the 54/15 gearing is a bit high. The motor/ESC never got hot, but the startup was labored and made a lot of motor noise, don't think it was happy. I think I'm going to put it back to 58/13 gearing and pick up a few smaller 4s batteries. Need to get the drag brake dialed too, not happy with it quite yet. Thanks for your help John!

You still running scx trans gears right? 54/15 does sound kinda tall if I did the math right. I know my 4s batteries are kinda big, but there is something about a low kv high voltage setup I really like.

Yes Andy, basically a divorced SCX trans like the Toyzuki set up. It is a bit tall, but I figured with the torque these motors put out, I might be able to get away with it. I was wrong. I ran it around in front of my house on 4s tonight and I think it's the deal. Time to order some more batteries.

Interested to see what you find, I think my batteries are getting kinda old. I'm not sure how long you are supposed to keep them...

I want a do it all bomber like everyone it seems haha. I would prefer more crawling than bashing if I have to prioritize.

With all things equal, is it better to get the 3500 and run on 2s or the 2200 and run it in 3s? How does the battery selection affect motor performance?

Seems like 3500 would be more versatile in that I could gear down and/or run on 2s if it's too fast. Where if I get the 2200 and it's too slow on 3s I would need to gear up or run on 4s which doesn't seem ideal based on what I am reading. Is this the right logic?

I would personally get the 3500. Judging by sales, the 2200 is currently more popular. If you really do want to crawl mostly, the 2200 will be easier to gear and control with the stock radio.

How do you decide on the kv when you are in development? What was the thought behind 2200 and 3500 in lieu of say 2500 and 3100 (as an example)

There are only certain choices available because of the stator length and turns with wye/delta combinations. I first choose the most efficient motor between Wye and Delta, there is always a better choice around specific KVs. Additionally, I design the motors to work on specific voltages with regards to stator and rotor limitations. 2200kv is very good for 4s use without risking failure. 3500kv is very good for 3s use without risking failure, etc. We can't run half cell voltages, so a motor must always be designed with battery limitation in mind.

There is a gap around the 3000kv mark for the 540 size, as a 3500kv motor geared 16% lower on 3s has a huge performance advantage over a 3000kv value. Better low speed control, more torque, more power. While I understand people being comfy around the 2700kv to 3300kv range, I also know that most people have a hard enough time deciding between 2200kv and 3500kv. Adding another choice will not make the decision easier, lol. And in the mean time the 3500kv choice stomps the snot out of anything slightly slower when it comes down to brass tacks of performance on the trail.
