Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

I agree Randy!

Schedule is pretty tight up until mid year, but maybe I can get out before fall.

No more Moto, but the MTB and r/c's would be with me.

Do you still have the DRZ?

No worries man, we all have lives away from our hobbies. I think you'd love a bicycle trip up here; Pisgah, DuPont, Bent Creek, etc. Wait till Mike heals up and make a road trip!

Yeah, I still have the DRZ, she'll be 9 years old this month actually. 23,000 miles on her, countless sets of tires, and lots of fun and great memories.

So, I didn't want to clutter up the other thread. For a little over two months now I've been on a slightly different diet, and added some body weight exercises a few times a week also. Started at 205lbs, I'm now 188lbs as of last Monday morning. Man do I feel good on the bike these days!

Speaking of which, got the fork out for it's first ride today since getting it back from Manitou. And it felt good, like it should. Now I can start playing with it to see what works, and what doesn't for me. I rode mostly solo today, sometimes that's nice.

Took the SStache up to the shop to weigh it today now that it's done. It was 29.1lbs stock with no dropper. So beefier fork, and dropper post and still coming in a full 2lbs lighter, hell yes!

Some of us from the MTBR forum put together a little group ride at Blankets Creek on Good Friday. I always enjoy making new riding friends, and riding new trails. If you're ever in the area, Blankets is fun as hell BTW! We're gonna try to get together once a month from here on out.

Yeah, different bike for this ride though. BUT, the new fork on the Stache feels REALLY good, and the seals aren't even broken in yet. I don't know if I could do that trail system on a SS, I know for sure I could not do Van Micheal trail, it's brutal. I'm always amazed at the elevation changes in a place that I consider to be flat.

Getting a new bike this spring some time. Looking pretty hard at the new 2017 surly karate monkey, or possible the Advocate Hayduke. Anyone seen/ridden these or any other plus bikes?

I've owned 26", 26" FAT, 27.5", 27.5+, 29, and 29+. To be fair, my 27.5+ setup was in the early days, with tires that didn't measure what they should have on rims that were a little narrow for them. The bike I ride most these days is a 2017 Trek Stache 29+. It's one of the most fun bikes I've ever owned. The amount of traction on tap lets you get away with things that will put you on the ground on skinny tires, and climbing is ridiculous as well. That being said, there's no free lunch in this world. Lower end builds generally carry heavy wheel sets that may or may not be able to be setup tubeless. By simply upgrading wheels and going tubeless I dropped over 2lbs of rotating weight, which is where you feel it most on a bicycle. My 29+ wheel / tire setup only weighs 300gr more than my regular 29er. Plus also require a good low pressure air gauge that reads in 1/2lb increments or smaller, as 1/2lb in PSI can make a big difference in ride quality.

If you're a XC racer, it's probably not for you. If you're out for sheer fun, nothing else comes close on a HT IMO. The Stache has me really wanting try a true 27.5+ setup on my Fuel EX.

RACE...ROFL.....I like to ride my bike and drink beer....sounds like a perfect platform for me!! I've got a bike shop ready to pounce on a karate monkey for me as soon as they are available...if they can't get one I may go with the Salsa timberjack which looks pretty nice for the price.

Putting a new demo cannondale trigger 2 together for the bike shop. Kind of excited to get a ride on it. Can't decide between the Jekyll and trigger. There are just so many good enduro style bikes out right now.

Headed out to Pisgah today, met up with a buddy of mine and got to ride Avery Creek for the first time. Avery might just be my favorite trail in Pisgah thus far. Burly, technical, steep, loose, old school Pisgah at it's finest. "thumbsup"

Bear shelter. Though with the whole front being open, looks more like bear meat counter to me.
