Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

Thanks guys I'm slowly building this bike up. I bought it for 40usd off Craigslist and I did check with the local bikes shops and the serial number is clean.

Registered for my first race in a year and a half... next weekend. MBAA at White Tanks, west side of Phoenix valley.
This won't end well. I'm gonna get smoked.
Rock Crusher, 200 lbs+, gotta start somewhere!

I've got 3 laps of 7 miles. Ian has 2 laps of the same course.
I go out at 8:48 am. He goes out at 10:42. If I time it right, we can finish together...:lmao::mrgreen:

If it does have disc mounts out back they'll be Hayes 22mm mounts if memory serves correctly. Best part about those bikes is that being a unified rear triangle design, the chain doesn't stretch, so you could easily turn that into a full suspension singlespeed which would be rad. Also, a good pair of v brakes will be lighter than discs, which would be cool if you went the ss route.

Got to go try out the new parts today. But for some reason, I just felt off all day, and really struggled. So I'll reserve judgement until I have a good day on the bike. Oh well, at least I got to get out.

So I thought there was mounts foe disk brakes on the rear swing arm but there's not. So is there still away for me to put disk brakes on it? I would do V breaks on it but the trails around here more or less call for disk and it is a legit Gary Fisher.

Where there's a will there's a way. There used to be a company who made a brace that bolted up to the v brake mount and supply you with a caliper mount by the hub. It's probably more likely to find a Joshua or level Betty swingarm on eBay. The problem is even with a disc compatible rear triangle, is cost of converting everything else over. To get that bike disc compatible is going to cost much more than what it's worth right now.

Those won't just bolt on.

Keep it simple and don't spend a bunch of money on an old bike.

Hmmm, I dont know what you're thinking of but Magura HS33 hydros do just bolt on to canti/V mounts .
I had a set of the flouro yellow ones back in the day and they were awesome , they still make them too.

Can that cause your rim to warp over time? If I have to go that route then I'll look in to those. I do plan to put Shimano rapid fire shift system on and wtb weirwolf tires. Not sure on what rim to git tho. Sill a bit new in MTBing.

Well, after fighting with my new fork all day yesterday (harsh, even 20psi below the recommended air pressure), I got home and consulted the manual and messed with it some more and I think it's defective. Two of my adjusters don't have the range they should, so I'm going to have to get in touch with Manitou and see what to do.

Oh yes, forgot the old bolt on v-brake hydro setup.

Crap defective fork, hope Manitou takes care of it, never dealt with their customer service.

Yep, at least I still have my old one to put back on in the mean time. Already heard back from them, should have a RMA number by the end of the day so I can ship it off. They will repair or replace it once they diagnose the issue.

I had Jeff rupps' old Maguras on an old Cannondale Beast of The East rigid bike and those dang things would make the thing flex. You could squeeze em hard enough that you'd think, okay, the hydraulic lines are gonna pop or I'm gonna dent the wheel. But the pads weren't all that great.

V brakes are totally good.

How about Onza cantilevers? Those were sweet.
