Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

Went for a small ride today...my god I'm out of shape for this bike haha. Also, what can I do to stiffen up the rear shock? Add more air? It just seems pretty soft, tons on pedal bob when I stand up, so much so I can't really pedal doing that. It's a Rockshox Monarch R.

I'm 145lbs and I have mine set to 210psi. Works well for me. You ain't gonna get rid of the pedal bob, but at least it's better. And what rupps said, slower rebound, but not too slow that it won't have time to react to bigger bumps."thumbsup"

Good luck rupps5!

Been out on the SS a couple times this week, did a pathetic trail run one day also. Trying to build my fitness some before my first Pisgah trip in a couple weeks so I don't die.

Canadian that bike has a maestro link right? It should have very little pedal bob compared to single pivot designs.

Here are the suggested sag settings and a quick read suggests starting with your body weight for shock pressure and the fork should have an air chart on the leg.

anyone know of a good handle bar that is like a short version of a BMX bar? i want to put one on my fat bike and possibly a shorter stem to get myself in a more upright position.

I'm an old moto guy, so a few of my bikes wear Answer Pro Taper bars. You can find them cheap <$30 on sale most of the time too. Race face makes a good reasonably priced stem in their ride series.

Also, you didn't mention what bars and stem (brand, sizes and dimensions) you're running now?

I'm the same weight, maybe 5 lbs more. I dunno what it's set at since I don't have a shock pump yet, but it was set up for my weight when I picked it up. I'll be picking a pump up next week since my next ride will be next weekend.

Yeah, it's a Maestro system. I think it might have been bobbing because I was in too low of a gear on not much of an incline. Like I said before, this is my first full suspension bike, I'm definitely not used to it's nuances yet compared to a hardtail which is all I ever rode before. The fork is pretty decent right now (it's a Sektor Gold RL), still needs some tuning though.

Haven't posted in a while. Still riding as much as I can. Wednesday nights ride consisted of some exploration and the race to beat the sunset.

Snagged one good photo of a new trail we rode. Lived up to its name "No Exit" after we struggled to hike out of the bottom...

Should be Maestro, great info, always gotta check and setup fork and rear shock as per charts, then fine tune as needed.

Here's a couple listings...if you don't like carbon they have aluminum also. I run these bars on my fat bike and I'm 220lb and ride pretty hard (I think, lol) This place is very reasonable and has a lot to choose from.

New Easton EA70 31 8 Hi Rise Alloy Handlebar 720mm Full Warranty | eBay

New Ritchey Pro Stem 31 8 70mm 30 Degree Black Stem | eBay

Nice gear at nice prices.  Chain Reaction Cycles | MTB | Road | TRI | Run has the best prices I've found on roadbike components, MTB should be good to, fast shipping, good shipping prices, great customer service...all from the UK to USA without any problems. "thumbsup"

Nice price as long as they can be cut down to proper width. Race Face stuff is not good quality, crank bearings that wear out fast, etc. I bought one of their stems at Performance Bike late one evening for next day ride, went on web to double check specs and found it had a RECALL on that stem for cracking and breaking! PB still had them on the shelf and when I returned it they were like, "really?":lmao::flipoff:

Also, you didn't mention what bars and stem (brand, sizes and dimensions) you're running now?

Yes, current setup will help us to help you.

Always check positive and negative (if dual chamber) before every ride! Seals leak, ambient temperature changes, sometimes it's still correct pressure, but I check before every ride and carry shock pump just in case.

Thanks guys for the help. I have a Gravity 29+ from bikes direct. i dont have a pic on my pc but i will get one. The bars are 30.5 i believe. I was also looking for something with a cross bar.

A shock pump is your friend. I never leave home without it, so as your tire pump. "thumbsup"

Personally for susupension, once I get my setup where I want it I don't bother carrying the pump around with me. I'm not changing my suspension setup for different riding areas after all, that's what the adjustments on the shock and fork are for.

Hit up the body farm trails at WCU yesterday. Probably not a great idea less than 24hrs after a stomach bug, I suffered a lot more than normal, I think one lady though I might actually die. Oh well, good to get out no matter what though. I also made a stem change (longer), and so far, I'm liking it.

Nice spot, and from you posting that you obviously didn't die

Also, MarshGuard? Or home made? I have a MarshGuard + Stash coming for mine.

Thanks CB, and yeah, I was driven to live by the promise of post ride beer. It's a store bought mucky nutz fender, stays on all the time.

As temperature changes, the pressure inside the fork and shocks changes, they are very small chambers and therefore are more affected by this than a larger volume of air would be. Seals leak a little over time too, always good to check pre-ride. "thumbsup"

We brought all of our gear (including suspension pumps) whenever we raced somewhere in the mountains. I didn't really notice big changes with elevation (I'm at about 5000' and raced at 10,000') but the mountains were always cooler than the Front Range where I live.

Water bottles on the other hand are very susceptible to elevation ;-)

I haven't checked the pressure in mine since getting it dialed in last fall, I'll check it and report back how much it's lost, if any. My bike does live indoors when not being used though, just FYI.

I picked up a bike a month ago to get into riding. I have about 24 miles of singletrack only a half mile from my new house. Looking forward to getting my ass kicked. It's been years since I have rode a bike and I have never ridden single track. Now just need the snow to melt.

Fuji Outland 1.0 29er, Reba fork, XT components, ect. Should do the trick.

^^Good looking bike rm, really dig the color scheme.

Welp, as usual your guys were right. Shock and fork were both down about 10psi, derp. Thanks for the tip!
