Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

We had an awesome ride on Saturday, nice and warm early morning ride.

We were going to ride Sunday, but woke up this......W...T...F....

The aluminum center piece thinger that the axle slides through, can I tighten them up? They were good a couple weeks ago when I got it back from the bike shop but have since developed some slop.

Well my son is all healed up from his crash and back on the bike. Did a 10.9 mile run today and he hung in there.

By fluke I figured out the tiny bit of slop I had in the front wheel, the axle just needed to get snugged up a hair. Took it out for a riiip in some of the wicked weather we've been getting in Alberta 8)

I'm in love!
The Surly handles the extremely technical rocks great... it's intense.

I love my Specialized Fatboy. This bike rocks. Im either going to spring for the bluto this year or drop the coin for a Salsa Bucksaw over the winter. Ill never ride another skinny tire'd bike again.

So a page or two back I posted that I got bit "big time" with the Mt Bike Bug. It's been over 10 yrs since I rode, long story short, got hurt, got out of shape, got lazy and got fat, lol. I'm 65lb over my riding weight 200-205 (I know, not your typical bike rider)

In "04" I put together a Foes FXR full suspension bike and put 3 rides maybe 100mi before I got hurt. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago I unclamped it from the stand, dusted it off and put air in the tires. I had it checked out at the LBS and new Hayes Pro hydraulics and new seals & wipers on the Talas fork and I was good to go. Needed new shoes too, I guess when you get older & fatter your feet grow or get wider & longer from being sqished, lol. Any way here's a pic of the Foes and the road bike, figured I throw that on the trainer to get some spinning in and start building some stamina.

I've been hitting the local county park a few times here lately, we have about 40mi of trail and 3/4 of it is single track. I 've been seeing a lot of the fat bikes on the trail (and here on the thread) and they really peaked my interest (coming from a dirt bike background). So I started looking into them and thought it might be cool to train on, bump up tire pressure for the road & let it out for the trails. Just getting back into it I didn't want to drop 2000.00 or more so I did a little research and my shop just got a "FRAMED" dealership, the only one in Western Pa. I picked up a Minnesota 3.0 for 1100.00, spec'd modestly but it will suffice. I have a lofty goal, but if things go the way I want I'm looking into a nice hard tail towards the end of next month. Either a Trek Stache 9 29+ or a Specialized Fuse Pro 27.5+ (leaning more towards this than the 29er) The new + tires 3", look like a really cool compromise between the standard tire & the fat tire.

another great ride this weekend with my brother in-law and friend and no more snow. Did around 26 miles.

I don't know how many Fat Bike owners out there but these things are pretty cool. The first couple rides I kept tire pressure up just to get a feel for the new bike and to get some legs under me after being off for so long. Today I took some pressure out, don't know what I was running, I did the push down on it until the sidewall flexes thing, lol and what a dramatic difference. It soaked stuff up that was going right through me previously. It rolled off road very nicely and didn't drag badly on the pavement but those big old tires were certainly noisier this time around.

I definitely need some stiffer cranks, these are flexing a bit and creaking badly already (3 rides), spec'd with a low end Truvativ. A nice stiff set of cranks with a good bottom bracket and this thing is going to be a blast.

A popular upgradehas been the SRAM GXP Crankset and external bearing bottom bracket. Check to make sure your crank bolts are tight too. That can cause creaking and it can destroy the cranks. You can also try taking out the BB and putting some grease around it. That may also help with the creaking.

Hey thanks for the tip my man but I'm certain it's just a flexy low end unit. Heck it's still got the square tapered shaft, lol. I'm more of a Clydesdale than a Thoroughbred.

I got my mind made up on a RaceFace Turbine crank set (Fat Bike specific) with their BB and I'm changing the rings to 22/32. The stock 28/38 just don't cut it around here, not for me anyway.

In addition to grease, when you get the new crankset/BB, add some teflon tape to the BB threads before you install them...or have the shop do it if you go that route. I've silenced many a BB with some teflon tape. As far as I'm concerned, all threaded BBs have the potential to creak, regardless of quality, so it's best to prevent it from the get-go.

I brought this home from the bike shop this afternoon. Trek Stache 9, not mine, it's a "demo" and I have it until Thurs. to put it through the ringer.

Wow, is this thing fun, I had it out for about an hour today. It's my first ride on a 29er and the "plus" tires are awesome. The bike is really lively man and the new Manitou Magnum Pro fork is nothing short of amazing. What a nice comeback for Manitou.

I'm still thinking I'm going to wait for the Specialized Fuse to be released. It has the 650b + tires.

Do you guys ever order at Pricepoint? And how was the service? Shipping times?

I have ordered from them and it was fine. Like chain reaction better.

Stopped by the bike store to pick up a bb for the new bike and they had some other parts come in that were on order. Today is like Christmas man!

Yeah, I've always ordered at CRC, but I would like to try out Pricepoint. I love my raceface narrowwide ring. You wont need a chain guide anymore.
