Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

So it's an evolution... same as the fat tire. It opens up new possibilities.
You can go places and do things you couldn't before... or at least do them better/easier.

Rode/hiked up 6300 feet the other day with a buddy, this particular mountain is only about an hour and a half from home. I love some of the things I've been able to see on my bike, and of course the ride down was fun as hell. There's actually a world cup DH trail there, which was a bit over our heads hahaha.

The trouble with my bike is it's a single speed ..... I'd love to get back into xc when I'm not riding downhill but I'd hate to spend 2-4 grand for a bike to not get used as much as I " plan " to ..... Most of my time is soaked up by the dirt jump park and the Dh/freeride trails it would be hard to " break from that" to go pedal up hill lol ......

I've tried searching pinkbike a bit but, jeeeesus their search sucks...Looking at doing bigger brakes on my bike. Currently has avid elixir 5's on it, 160mm in the rear and 180mm in the front. I'm not a small guy, and it's just not enough for DH, the little bit that I do. I had the poor rear smoking yesterday haha. I kind of had my eye on some hope v4's, and I know a lot of guys really like the shimano saints...Any other brakes to look into? Not made of money, but I'm not going to go through the hassle of buying brakes just to half-ass it.

MTBR is much better than Pinkbike imo. Skip all Avid hydraulic brakes, they are bitch to bleed after shortening hose length to fit your bike. I've had several sets and the only good Avid brakes are cable BB7, not what you're looking for with this. Shimano is the way for hydraulic brakes, you get what you pay for...SLX is great price point but if you're DH then you want Saints.

I don't do strictly downhill, but I'm fat, so when I do...I need moar stopping powa haha. I see a lot of guys prefer saint/shimano over hope because of the availability of pads/parts.

Hayes stroker ride are what I use for Dh ... But I try not to use them at all lol .... Much cheaper than hope close price point to the saint stuff but a much better brake ... The saint levers are garbage and hit my fingers ... There's 3 levels of the stroker brakes you should be able to get yourself some ... I run tiny rotors on my Dh ... Maybe 6" rear 7" front .... I'll measure tonight ...

Anything you get I'd go 203 front and 180 rear. The ZEE's are pretty good and they're basically just a slightly cheaper Saint brake. Or you could get some Guide's. Just depends on what features you want and how much you have to spend. Personally, I'd get ZEE's. I have Formula T1s on my DH rig right now and wouldn't mind getting some zee's for it simply based on how much people like them. Hell, I'll sell you my formula's for $300 shipped.

Do not use a larger front rotor than your fork is rated for or you may have more problems when something fails. "thumbsup"

I,ve got a set of Avid Elixr 7,s on my Reign and love em Probably marginaly less feel than the Shimano XT,s that were on it when i got it, but shedloads more power and i haven,t had any fade problems .
Wasn,t really impressed with the saints , they were definately good , but there price wasn,t

Got out for a ride the past 2 evenings. Yesterday's was a short lap up and back down the local, go-to downhill trail.

In regards to the previous comments about brakes...on a DH bike you can't really go wrong with a good 4 piston brake, but some of them will be harder to service and find parts for than others. I would stick to Shimano over Hope or Formulas because the vast majority of shops will have pads and parts for them. Not to mention Shimanos are cake to bleed. I would recommend Zee brakes over Saint, unless you're racing a lot or want the bling factor. The Zee brakes work VERY well.

Lots to think about for sure. Sometimes I splurge and buy parts for the "bling" factor depending how I'm feeling that day, but having not worked since January I'm trying to keep it on a budget haha. Basically the definition of a bike bum, if the sun is shining I'm probably riding...Just picked up a 180mm rotor for the back, I'll try that out and see if it helps any. I'm fully aware that my riding style is hard on brakes, I need to get a little more comfortable on the steep stuff.

The only " bling " items on my bike and I don't mean purple stuff but actual stuff that wasn't " needed " the industry 9 hubs that they custom anodized for me ..... Almost 900 for the 2 hubs .... The top crown on my fork ... The " loaded" stem ... And the ti spring in the fork and ti spring on the rear shock .... The brakes are 4 piston Hayes stroker ... With Hayes rotors I got on fleabay ... ..... Come to find out , evil now makes a xc bike looks just like mine only carbon an xc may be in my future after all

WOW, an unbroken revolt! Those things didn't last around here, no problems with the undead though, killer bikes.

This is the replacement updated frame ;) lol waited 8 months to get it but it was free so I didn't complain much ... The undead is sick but I hit a lot of trees so I'm weary of a carbon frame :(
