Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

I previously posted up the changes I made on the FatBike to personalize it and I added a couple more items recently, new RaceFace Cranks and new XO "Twisters". I'm living large now man! I love grip shifts and being able to grab multiple gears and the cranks are awesome no more creaking or clicking.

I was finally able to get the Surly out again after work today... it's been raining every damn day or I've had plans.
I f'n love the fatbike!

Went for a ride today. Turned out shitty. Spent an hour or so in traffic just to get to the trail. Then, noticed my rear brake was leaking at the lever as I was about to start my ride. Spent almost 2 hours going the other way to the bike shop on the way home. Now I'm getting XT's put on it. I wouldn't be as pissed if it didn't happen on the day I had just emptied my account to pay of the rest of what I owed on the bike.

In 93 I bought a Performance mountain bike with a 19'' frame that had a rigid front fork and the Shimano 21 speed LX with the rapid fire shifters, the new black ones, at the time I bought the bike, that setup was race proven to be XXXX, and in 18 months I put over 1,260 miles cause I had a top of the line Top Cad kit that came with the sensor that mounts on the fork and the magnet ring a that attached to the front axle hub, and I had the bike shop set up after I installed it, so I know the mileage is correct then I injured nerves in my back and tore my sciatic nerve, so sitting on a small hard seat and beaning bent over even after changing the neck to a taller one and using the flat bars that I had on both my Honda XR and my mountain bike, then I changed to Desert Bars on my Honda XR and changed my mountain bike bars to Downhill bars and that really helped and was comfortable to me for awhile, until I re-injured my back again and have not been able to ride either, not with out inflaming my back and causing me pain that needs days to recover to be normal again

I dig the $hit out of mine too bro! "thumbsup"

Fathers Day tomorrow, my birthday and Anniversary next weekend and I've been selling off half my rigs, I'm thinking I deserve a new full suspension bike. Stay tuned...8)

I didn't know there was an mTB section on here. I'll have to look back through and see what's going on.

Any of you guys ride trials?
I had a bike of time off mtb riding! been riding a lot of trials and skate park/street.
I was looking at getting a dual suspension trail bike. I completely missed when the 27.5 wheels came in.
When did that happen?

About a year-ish ago.

Got my Specialized Fatboy last October.
Never ride anything else now.
Not on Strava. I use Endomondo.

HaHa! Fat B Nimble, Fat B Quick, Fat rode through & up a rocky creek! :ror:

What a pretty impressive fat tire man. We've had a ton of rain up here in SW Pa. These things hooked up in the mud and over slippery roots & rocks like nobody's business. Way better than my stock tires did.

Don't know how much pressure I was running, I just use the squish method, if it looks good I ride if it looks like there's too much I let some out. 8)

Sweet! I usually run about 7psi. That seems to be hard enough to go fast, not bounce, and soft enough to suck up the rubble and smooth out the ride.

I wish I could ride trials, unfortunately a bit too top heavy haha. When I was younger there was a few guys around town that were big into it and pretty good, always looked up to them and have a lot of respect for the guys that can do some of the crazy trials shit.

Hey J.Duke what size tires you running in the pic up above? I was looking to stay with the 4.0 size and heard good things about the Fat B Nimble and Panaracer has had a decent rep in the tire biz. I'm just a tad leary on trying the gigantua 4.7 or 4.8's, lol.

I've been keeping up with this thread here for awhile. I have to ask some of you for some advise. I want to get back into mtn biking after some time off. Back around 1995-1999 I raced cross country and rode ALOT! Built a full custom Ventana Marble Peak and still have it.

I still love the bike, and although it is outdated, it rides really nice.

Specs:

3" travel Ventana frame
Bomber Z1 fork
XT 8-speed drivetrain
Race face cranks
Magura Luise front disc
XTR V brakes rear
Chris King rear hub with ceramic Mavic rim

My issue is that the drivetrain is shot. Needs shifters, and rear cassette minimum. I can't really afford a new bike right now but I could put $300-$400 into this one. I'm thinking about a 1x10 conversion but my crankset is a 5 bolt circle pattern. Can you get a single narrow wide ring for it? What would you guys honestly do if you were me? I've found a 1x10 conversion kit for $200. With this and a new set of tires I think it would be a decent ride until I can afford to look at new bikes. Thanks! Tim

You bet. I'm running the stock Specialized Ground Control 4.6 inch. At the time I bought the bike, I also test rode several other makes with 3.8 inch tires, and preferred the 4.6 over the narrower fatty tires.

Specialized tires are light, the bike is nimble as hell, and the only drawback is the price. They are $140 each!

8 Speed shifters and cassettes are all still easy to find on ebay
You would have change out of $100 for shifters cassette and chain"thumbsup"
If i was you i,d spend a $100 , keep the triple chain rings and then ride the wheels of it.
And if the MTB addiction kicks back in ( which it will;-) ) Put the money you saved into a new Bike

^^^I agree, get a new drive train off ebay and get back into it and ride that badboy as is! 1x anything is a pretty lofty idea if you have not ridden in awhile.

If you get back into it and get the bug bad and want a new bike, Trek is offering a pretty sweet program. Get their credit card (which is good for any bike your local Trek dealer carries not just Trek bikes) if you spend over 3,000.00 you get 12 mos. same as cash (less and you can get 6 mos same as cash) then you wouldn't have to chunk down all the coin at once. (make sure you pay it off though the interest rate is ridiculous after 12 mos) Just food for thought. "thumbsup"

There are some really sweet bikes in the 3-5 grand price range, from high end hardtails to full suspension. Like you, I've been out of it for awhile and was amazed at what's available now a days.

Wow war pig, a marble peak fs! I always wanted one of those. Had a marble peak hard trail couple of years ago. If your looking for 8 speed stuff pm me what you need. Think I have some new in a box and some slightly used.

In other news, built back up my Santa Cruz chameleon 650b single speed 140mm fork. But think I am going to sell it, want to make room for another race bike.

Great Fathers Day run yesterday. We did around 47 miles into the woods. At one point we could not find our way out. Lots of poison ivy though.

I use to run 3X8 set-up and I thought it was a little rough, especially changing to both gears when trailing, but now I'm running a 1X10 and I love it. raceface NW 36t out front and 11-36 in the back.
