Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

I had the same reaction when I recently got to take a spin on a fatbike. For the longest time I thought they were kinda silly and pointless for where I live, but our Specialized sales rep brought one of their Fatboy bikes by the shop and I couldn't stop grinning when I rode the thing. Not sure I'll ever own one personally, but they're fun as hell to ride.

Hpiguy, I got my wife the mongoose dolimite fatbike and put some of my parts off my giant on it. She loves it. Now we are both looking at the Gravity ones.
We all were taking turns riding it just laughing how fun they are to ride. Getting snow tonight so maybe she will let me test it!!

I thought the same thing, until a soggy start at Tsali one day. I was slipping around on roots, scary at times going into corners. A buddy of mine broke his arm that same day actually, washed the front end on a root going into a corner. I was taking a break and hear this odd noise, then out of the blue some guy and his wife come up on fat bikes. It was the tires I heard making noise. I asked them how they did in those conditions and they said fantastic. I've wanted one ever since.

Ha ha, that's awesome RB. I could not be happier with mine, they really are a lot of fun for sure. All my other bikes weren't a different experience from anything I used to ride, but the fat bike most definitely is. If I lived where it snowed a lot, I'd go the geared route though.

My new love i've had for about a month, been cranking out the rides before it's all snow! Been lucky so far. I'm really digging this thing, I thought i'd miss my bronson, but there's no looking back.

Nice endoro dirk! I'm not a specialized guy normally but that same bike caught my eye at the LBS the other day.

NICE! Just rode a S-Works Enduro at a demo.... SWEET!

^^I too have been eyeballing the enduro. Not sure why, as my old ass will never ride it like it should be ridden. NICE BIKE!

That's a pretty Enduro there dirk! Wish my Devinci was that light. Add another roughly 10 pounds and you got what mine weighs. My Float 36R with a Vanilla damper is heavy, heavy, heavy as is my DHX Air 5.0, wheel set, dropper post and brakes. I regularly use all my travel.

I'm not a fan of fat bikes. I'm used to either a trials bike or a fairly long travel bike. Either plush or pogo stick. Fat bike does neither for me. Just a rough riding bike with no explicit purpose. At least the trials bike is uncomfortable for a reason.

The fat bike rolls well as far as I've seen but I'll never go rigid and less than 160mm FS is not appealing to me.

Thank you. I'm not either, always sworn to myself id stick with Santa Cruz. I was originally going to get the new Nomad but i'm glad i went this route. I demo'd our rep's nomad for a week or so and it was a very fun playful bike. But there's something about the fsr that i'm loving a lot. It feels like a mini DH bike but still climbs really well. I think i'm a bit faster and more comfortable at speed on this vs the nomad and bronson. Time will tell 8) I'll be doing lots of enduro racing the 15' season.

The cool thing about the expert is it has the fact 11 carbon that usually you only get in the sworks package. So its virtually the same frame, just not painted to say sworks.

Thanks, you never know! It might just give you the confidence you've been lacking.

Get a bike like mine. Stumpjumper FSR. Pedals great and has enough travel that almost any one can use all of it. Or you could get the Evo that has 135mm in the rear and 140 in front.

Touche', if you aren't going to be riding the rough at speed or hitting the bike parks there are other bikes that might do the job. Tho they don't have the sexy X wing frame design ;-)

Thanks, yeah it is nice being on this light of a bike. I started out on a hard tail that weighed 36lbs, went to my bronson that i rode for 2 seasons which started out at 33.4 that i got to 30. Fat bikes are fun up in the snow where ya cant ride your normal steed. It's just nice to be able to get some exercise and go fast with gravity when otherwise you'd be home stuck on the couch.

That's why I have a fury. Well, that and also to race out at Fontana. Please excuse the potato photo. It was dark and other excuses.

My last ride tried to kill me. 2.5 mile sustained climb first off while not being on a bike on a month. And it was snowing and maybe 30 degrees. Buddy was on a 29er stumpy. I got it handed to me. Had to take 3 breathers.

That hardtail of yours is what mine started as then added DH bars, much bigger brakes (I swear I was going to die on the juicy 3s), dropper post, bigger rear shock and new fork bits when I broke the damper. I'd love to go back tubeless, it rolls far better but I blew both out on some gnarly trails and a huge drop so tubes.

Around here it snows, freezes and in a few days I ride around a bit on top of the snow. That's also fun with the ERevo!

Nice! I believe it was either Gwin or Ropelato that was racing the Enduro out at Fontana as welk as one our two world cup races... That bike can do anytging.. Nice Fury!

The Enduros are pretty awesome bikes for sure. I wouldn't discredit the Stumpy, though. It's a great all-around bike, lightweight, strong as hell, and climbs as well as it goes downhill. Mine sits at 27lbs 14oz ready to ride with a size small aluminum frame, 26" wheels, Pike RCT3 150mm fork, 1x10, dropper post, etc... A good fork really wakes the Stumpy up in terms of it's capability and ride quality. Now they're coming with a much better fork than the Fox 32 the comp models use to come with. Those left a lot to be desired.

I've been looking at a lot of the mid travel "trail bikes" as they're known these days. I was planning on one this coming spring, but not sure that's going to happen now with some other things I have going on in the coming year financially, but we'll see.

Mine is right at 29-ish lbs. stock with a large 2014 carbon comp with 29" wheels. I was thinking about getting rid of the Revelation and putting a Pike 140 and a dropper on there. Might upgrade the brakes to either XT's or Zee's. And maybe some stiffer wheels. But overall I really like the bike the way it is right now. Just sucks that it takes almost $4k to get a bike that I really like that has a decent spec.

Since we are talking about all mountain bikes I will post up my chameleon. I live this bike because you can build it up any way you want. 140 up front

With 26" wheels and geared

Or 650 and single speed

I love my FatBoy. Picked it up a year ago.

This summer I rode it at Bootleg. I thought I was being a crazy rebel. Nope. There was another fatbiker out there too.

The fatbike does have it's place. My favorite bike would be my Turner Burner
