Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

Hpiguy, I see that you were looking for lights on mtbr. What did you pick or are you still looking? I have a magic shine and it is all right. Would like to try the cre lights on ebay... did you find any good rear lights? I need one to last 5 or so hours. Have a safras rear light which is awesome but does not last long enough.

I haven't yet, had some other things come up on short notice. Thanks for asking though.

I really wanted to buy reasonably high end lights, you know, the buy once cry once mentality. But it doesn't look like that's going to happen before the holidays at least.

I'm currently running a Bontrager flare 3 tail light, and it's very bright, and has both steady and flashing modes. I've ran the same batteries all season and it's still going strong. The tail light that came with my MS headlight clone is pretty decent also.

For the meantime, I'm probably going to pick up a Xeccon spiker 1211. It got good reviews over at MTBR, comes with good Samsung batteries, and is very reasonably priced on Amazon. I also have one of the magicshine clones as well. Between the two it should suffice for this season.

Well, after a lot of reading and research, I ended up picking up a Xeccon Spiker 1211 for my helmet light needs for now. It got decent actual user reviews over at MTBR, comes with good batteries, and it fit my budget so hopefully I'll be happy with it. I'll run my magicshine clone on the bars in addition to it. If the rain holds off, first night ride is tonight!

Espensive lights mostly over-rated/over-priced ime. I like Niterider for a little more money Magicshine for less $$$.

Blackburn Mars rear click light has been great for me in summer, rain and lots of mtb and roadbiking. Click Rear Battery Operated Safety Light - Blackburn Design

Nice and report back please. Where did you buy it? Looks very much like MS, but nicer. "thumbsup"

Thanks for the recommendations Nate. I bought the Xeccon on Amazon actually, they carry quite a few of their lights and I can have it in two days. Sadly, my first night ride got cut short this evening. Was having an issue with my bar mounted light cutting off (think I have it sorted now) and wasn't willing to chance it with only one light. What time I did get to ride was pretty cool though, it's a whole different experience at night. I will say the magicshine MJ808 clone is rated at 1200 lumens (we all know it's a lie being a clone, but I thought it was fairly bright) can't touch the Xeccon that is rated at only 850 lumens. I'll report back with more after an actual decent length ride, and I'll get some video also.

Gotta watch attaching things to your helmet. Take a tumble and land on your head and the helmet may be compromised. It's been suggested that Michael Schumacher's head injuries were a lot worse than they should have been because of the GoPro camera he stuck on his lid. Just saying...

This is true. Luckily, the majority of bike lights mount using a simple o ring so that in the event of a crash the o ring will break allowing the light to come free of the helmet for this reason.

Michael Schumacher's head injury has been blamed on his GoPro mount on his helmet.

Here's a vid I put together from my last DuPont trip. I still have more footage to go through also.

I'm also learning some new editing programs so hopefully the vids will get better over time. The music is from the guy (Eric Congdon) we saw at Oskar Blues that evening, I just thought it was fitting to be honest. Eric's a really cool guy, incredibly talented, and he gave me permission to use his music in the video.

scored a great bike from my neighbor last night. He is leaving for a year to go to the oil fields in Alberta, Canada. Ask me 40 dollars for it. Almost a giveaway. It's a 2010 Kona Dew Deluxe hybrid 700c x 32. The only thing I need to replace is the bottom bracket, it's slipping already. Other than that it's in great shape. My Specialized is becoming more of a trail bike than city. This will be good for me as I bike to work alot.

No moto brake lever setup here, standard mtb and I like it. There is already more going on with right hand because of shifting rear derailleur, sometimes fork lockout etc.

Two lights. "thumbsup":lmao: I've not lost my helmet light, but I've gotten my head jerked pretty hard several times on low branches.

All nonsense!

Nice score ped453, but what is a slipping bottom bracket? I mean I understand, but what part of a bottom bracket slips? Is it spinning in the frame? Not sure I've heard that term before.

Meh, why moto style?

Yes, more info never heard that either...crunchy bottom bracket I've had. Also had outboard bearings that were starting to seize and cranks were spinning inside the bearing on my mtb...lol. Luckily I caught it before my cranks were damaged.

sorry guys, maybe slipping wasn't the right word, when I pedal it's basically skipping. I looked at my chain and cassette which are both in great condition. I'm assuming it's the bottom bracket. It's also feels like it's coming from the bb.

Unless it has a crap-ton of miles on it, it probably isnt the bottom bracket.

Have you adjusted the derailleurs?

Check your chain again...specifically the master link. If it's the style that can be pushed together to take it apart, it could be the problem. I had one on my road bike that wore the side plates out which caused the master to be longer than the rest of the links. When it rotated off the teeth of the cassette, it would give a small pop that got worse over time. If you have a bike stand, you can probably see it as you pedal.

yup, also in great shape. Yes it has alot of miles in it. He has replaced the cassette, rear derailleur and chain. The only thing he hasn't done was the crank and bb. That's why I was focusing on the bb, but I could be wrong. I will be overhauling the bike soon, I should find the real cause then. It could also be my wheel hub?

The bottom bracket is two bearings and a shaft that connects the two cranks together. There's nothing to skip.

Chainring new?

I'm reminded of cheap bikes with the one piece crank. Hah.
