Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

Yeah, but I had a green sidewall Geax tire. Remember it well, cause it was stylin'.

Hopefully it pans out to something productive! When I spend money I tend to commit, so at least I'm headed in that direction.

I washed the insoles of my old Shimano shoes. Water turned nasty quick. Whole shoe could use a serious denastifying. Pedals still clip in. New cleats are $32 at Nashbar.

I almost forgot; we ended the day with Pescado's take out and live music by Eric Congdon and beers at Oskar Blues.

Until this happened about 2/3 of the way up a climb. I guess they really do make you stronger.

Hmmm, Nashbar says KMC Z410 chain which is 1/2 x 1/8", usually SS runs 1/2 x 3/32" (which are usually higher quality from what I've read) unless it's bmx cogs and then they are 1/2 x 1/8".

I've always had good luck with KMC chains, smooth, strong, good shifting (on geared bikes), great on my previous Mary SS, K810SL (1/2 x 3/32"), great chain paired with Surly 32T stainless chain ring and 20T cog (I'm running 32/18 now on my Nashbar SS 29er).

Me either, seen several break usually do to shifting under heavy load (geared bike, nasty steep, rooty out of the saddle grinder at speed) and then the dude got pissed that he's broken too many chains...lol. We could see how the side plates had been pealed away from the pin.

I've not seen SS chain break since bmx days long ago and then it was not snapped pin like yours. "thumbsup"

Yea,How you feelin?
We had killer jumps at one time,i cant tell ya how many times i ate sh*t before even getting to the lip because of a chain breaking or coming off:lmao: that sucked!!!!!

Yep, I broke one years ago on my old Fuel from shifting under high load when I was a noob, but I've never sheared a pin like this though. This was a different chain from the one came on the Nashbike, old one was too short. I think it's a KMC but can't remember. I'll see if the shop has a 3/32 chain tomorrow though when I go to replace it.

Yeah, I got a little banged up but nothing major. I was on the downstroke on the right pedal when it let go, and was just barely to the left and behind a big oak tree. My momentum threw me forward and to the right, my right knee tagged the tree, and something (likely something on the bike since I was still clipped in) got me behind my left knee in a couple places also. I'm prolly be a bit sore tomorrow, but nothing a new chain and a good ride won't fix. Thanks for asking though. "thumbsup"

Oh, anyone else ride front brake on the right lever?

Everyone I know rides right-front , moto style. Must be an Aussie thing.
Nothing worse than having a spin on someones bike with front-left , like trying to drive on the RHS of the road , not natural for me !

When I first started mountain biking (88'-89') there were a lot of people trying out front right. It was a fad then and most people abandoned it. This was back in the old cantilever days though, and breaking power wasn't that great. Since most people are right handed, they were able to get more breaking power for the rear with their right hands.

I grew up on dirt bikes, but have never had a problem with right rear on a bike, or going back and forth between a bicycle and a motorcycle.

CHUD, that's when I did it, when it was a fad but it was late 90s for me. I had Onza cantilevers and red and black Ritchey pads. Totally tweaked and tuned. Loved it. I think I was thinking that since I had better control of my right hand I would be better off. And yes, riding other people's bicycles is tough when the brakes are the other way around. "thumbsup"

WTB tires and pedals are on. Found some banana smelling chain lube, too.
