Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

When I first started mountain biking (88'-89') there were a lot of people trying out front right. It was a fad then and most people abandoned it. This was back in the old cantilever days though, and breaking power wasn't that great. Since most people are right handed, they were able to get more breaking power for the rear with their right hands.

I grew up on dirt bikes, but have never had a problem with right rear on a bike, or going back and forth between a bicycle and a motorcycle.

I started racing about 1990 in the bad old days of canti's , massive arm pump and not stopping ! I think cos 70% of braking power is with the front wheel the right/front fad stayed on here.
Just looking at my Manitou 1 shocks on my wall , I'm pretty sure they flexed back and forth as much as up and down !! How are we all still alive after riding with that stuff !

I'm thinking Oury grips. Like I used to use.

I had an old Manitou that I extended the travel to almost maybe twice stock. Talk about flexy flier! Worked pretty good though. Manitou 3 or 4 maybe?

I like Oury, can't remember which one though, the one with all the little rings. Currently running Odi Troy Lee lock on grips on both MTBs, and I love 'em.

Come to think of it, I think when we were doing our weak attempts at trial riding these kept twisting. That was annoying... maybe I'm mistaken. We used Auqa Net, too. I think.

I still have an old Manitou EFC. It really needs a brake booster...way too flexy without. I never like Oury mountain bike grips. Too fat for my liking...they felt like I was holding 2 tennis rackets in my hands. My favorites were always ATI Tomac grips. Barely bigger than the bar itself. I also cut the padding out of my gloves.

Gloves? :lmao:

If these grips I have (CODA) weren't yellow I wouldn't mind them so much. And they leave the word CODA imprints all over your hand. But they're a good diameter, probably right in the middle of the range I guess. I do remember the feeling of grabbing an Oury at first, and tennis racket is pretty funny.

If I had my hands on the grips more I wouldn't see them as much.

The oury ones do twist on my bars. I used to run the tomac clear grips! And I still use aqua net to put on my grips. My favorite grips now are the xlc foam ones.

Anyone remember Oakley 1's from '80's BMX days ? really thin and super grippy . Unobtainium they called the rubber and it was awesome. Oakley 2's were double layer with the outer layer having holes in it , Oakley 3's were those weird things that sorta wrapped around your hand, I couldnt get used to them.
I'm running super thin silicone grips now , love 'em !

Lots and lots of people use the esi grips and love them. But I hear that if you forget your gloves and have sweaty hands they can get very slippery.

Don't remember the oakley grips but I did win a pair of reissued oakley s this summer in a wattage contest.

Hpiguy, I see that you were looking for lights on mtbr. What did you pick or are you still looking? I have a magic shine and it is all right. Would like to try the cre lights on ebay... did you find any good rear lights? I need one to last 5 or so hours. Have a safras rear light which is awesome but does not last long enough.

Well, it rained last night and today. Stopped just in time for me to wait an hour for the water to soak in and go for a ride. Was still a bit squishy, slick, and wet in some spots. But it was pretty good trail conditions over all. Oh, and anybody want to buy a 2011 Kona Stinky TL? But seriously, I really want to sell it so I can something that I can race enduro with.

As for grips, I have some white ODI TLD's and I love them. The only bad thing is they're white and get dirty real easy. Other than that they're perfect.

Gotta be lock on style grips for me no twisting or turning. Was rocking the Oury lock ons. Went to the (don't laugh) ERGON lock ons. After getting stabbed in the belly with my bars during a wreck I think the wide oval edge of the Ergons is a real life saver.

I haven't been riding as much as I want, maybe once a week, but I'm grooming by kids to get there quick so I can get them out on the trail.

The little guy is already beyond the little "training wheel" casters on the side of this thing, so they are coming off. He gets frustrated that he can't corner as well as his sister on the "bigger" bike.

I run the cheap chinese 1500 lumen cree lights and they have been brilliant , get about 4 hrs at 100% which is more than enuff light for MTB
On the dirt bike i run 2 , one at 100% and the second one at 70%
Only problem with them is when its real dusty
