Jimmy's build along buggy thread

Once I changed to .035 rod I had much better luck as well. Cool to see some more progress on these Carey, but I'm sure Hurricane Helene has slowed that down some. We are on day 5 of no power, I'd imagine pretty close to the same for you guys.

Good deal on the filler. I'll get that ordered for the next round of welding.

Yep. Same story here. Projected to get power back on oct 5th so we'll see. Thankfully my house didn't have any major damage. Looking at a new roof and some fence work. So many around me have trees through houses and cars so I feel very lucky.

Thanks for sharing your progress in a thread. I look forward to see how it comes along.

The use of printed jigs to gage bends is an excellent method. It's very cool that Josh is putting these builds projects out for folks to enjoy. I am tempted to pick up the files and attempt to just silver solder one together because I already have the simple gear for it.
I am curious to learn how long a tank of argon will last using a tig to weld up these cages. It's the one thing that has me hesitating on the welder.

I picked up a size 80 tank, I did a lot of practice and built the full moon buggy cage and still have some left. The guage is fairly low now but hopefully I can do at least stage 1 of the promod off that tank. Then its only $30 for a refill at my local welding supply store.

I just finished fitting up the rest of the stage 2 tubes today. I had hoped to do this 2 weeks ago but the hurricane knocked out power for a week so I'm just getting back to it. I also ordered the .035 rod so hopefully I can work on getting these welded next weekend.

Looks great, how are you liking the tig?
So far I let my buddy handle the tig work. He's got a nice machine, but we had a hard time trying to mimic the settings Josh had suggested for the yes welder in his video. I considered picking up one of those machines, but i have 0 room to stash another welder in my garage. Once he's able to dial in the settings, which the thinner filler rod should help with, I'll give it a shot. I can mig weld, but never have tried tig.

The chassis are out of the stage 2 fixtures. The .035 tig rod worked much better. Cole also ditched the pulse function on his welder and just used the pedal to control the heat which he's more familiar with. I left them with him so he can finish welding them out. He wants to pick up a mini torch for his welder as the inside tubes were tough to get position on with the standard size tig torch.

I've wondered how the 3d printed jig would hold up to heat, but I guess It did well. I may try something like this for my imaginary sandrail.

They held up pretty well. I would say i could use them again if I wanted to. Since I have no plans of building another of this chassis I tossed them when we were finished with them. That's also a benefit of the bambu (vs my old printer). If i end up wanting to make another some day it's only a few hours to print a new set.

Glad the .035 worked out better for you guys. They are turning out good, looking forward to seeing a roller. I started building the RockaBilly Promod this week, about half way done with that chassis.

Thanks Marcus. My master plan is to design my own rc buggy chassis based on Cole's buggy (or possibly my own 1:1 rcmfab chassis depending on how long i drag this out). I started drawing up my current crawler a while back but figured i would wait and do the full buggy instead.

I picked up the fully welded chassis Saturday. Making good progress on fitting up thw stage 3 parts. The modification I made at the rear of the chassis worked out pretty well. If I can carve out a few hours this week I should have this stage ready for welding by the weekend.

I think I remember you saying you weren't using the SCS parts. If that is still the case, have you decided on skid and stuff to design mounts for?

I had only ordered 1 set, thinking that Cole wouldn't need most of them. Once I opened my scs parts and really looked at what all it had i ordered a second set. The motor mount plate is really the only thing he won't be able to use. I got 2 sets of the aluminum parts as well.

As for the skid, I drew up and printed a prototype 3 gear skid. He's got wraith axles so I widened the link mounts. Should work OK.

It's all plate parts from here. The stage 3 tubes are all tacked in place. We got the motor plate and skid mounts attached on 1 of the chassis, and skid mounts on the other, but the fixture took to much heat and melted so the skid mounts weren't square. I printed new fixtures for each a bit heavier so they should hold up, and not have to be used more than once. We don't need the motor plate for the 2nd buggy, but it shouldn't be in the way and it'll strengthen the chassis a lot so we'll get that done with the new fixture as well. These chassis look great once all the tubes are in place.

In slightly related news (speaking of buggy building) Cole is making progress on my new front axle that will eventually be installed in my new 1:1 buggy. Custom eaton ho72 with Ford superduty shafts and steering, 50° steering angle. I've been planning and gathering parts for this axle for years. Hopefully the buggy build will be in full swing this time next year. Rc crawlers are my cheap hobby. 😆

That thing is seriously beefy, all your projects are very cool. Can’t wait to see how they all turn out.
