How to do the narrow XR10 mod to Axial axles

I hear there are new SSD axels on the way.

They do exist. Now we wait.

I'm actually in the process of fitting two long Wraith Universals to my scx10 axles.

Dlux Fab sells each side separately here.

I'm cutting them to length then TIG welding additional thickness on the ends so I can machine them to spec in my lathe. I know it's complicated and not for everyone but I thought I would mention it. As it's about the only current option if you want true universals and not Cv's.

Left Stock XR10 Universal, Middle is modded Xr10 Universal, Right is MIP CVD for scx10.

Can anybody tell me why the scx shaft is not exactly the same length as the modded, shortened xr shaft?

Unless the chub does not press as far on, the chub won't change the measurement. 8* stuff and non 8* stuff would use the same length inner shaft.

I have a set of scx inner shafts here and get the same results as above. Scx looks to be roughly 1/8" shorter than the shafts you guys are making.

Are you guys just making them longer than standard for full engagement?

I am just thinking I could make FBA shafts in scx length and cover both cars?

I am asking because I like to know as much about a product as possible before making them so I can make the best product I can, especially before dropping $1000's of dollars on them just to find out I made a boo boo.

If I look at the above pictures and other pictures in this thread of the modded XR shafts, it DOES NOT look like the stock SCX shaft will work (at least that well). Maybe you could get away with approx 1/8" of engagement but I wont be making a product that is designed with that little of engagement.
 
I know the first time I did an xr mod I was afraid because it seemed like I had to cut off more than what the write ups were saying. Otherwise the shafts would bottom out, so maybe we are just running them long..?

You gotta remember on the universals are longer at the joint vs bell on cvd's. But yes, the XR going to have more engagement in the locker vs stock cvds.

I also didn't mean sound like attitude, I meant that awesome your looking into having inner shafts.

I'm actually about start this mod myself.

So, I came on RC Crawler as to find some help and tips for the steering modifications of my stock scx10.
After reading this very interresting subject I have the following questions :

1) Can you tell me external diameter of the tube in the axle housing on the following picture :

2) In this subject, someone gave the URL of the SSD HD CVD Axles for SCX10 / D60 Axle (part number SSD00086) : SSD HD CVD Axles for SCX10 / D60 Axle
This CVD axle could avoid me cutting and drilling XR10 cvd : less work for me.
Will this cvd axle fit on XR10 C-Hub + XR10 Knuckle + Stock scx10 axle housing ?
I would like to know if the SSD00086 cvd axle lenght will be too short as it's done for Scx10 stock parts, not for XR10 C-Hubs and Knuckles ?
