Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

After two different systems, I finally went with a Mamba Max Pro and a Tekin 13.5T sensored motor. This is a great combo. I have very good slow speed control and all the wheel speed that I need on 3S."thumbsup"

I have a MMP in the front, side ways, without a fan, that is how I got it. I'm planning to relocate it to the rear and was wondering if I should go through the trouble of getting the fan for it. The motor is a Tekin 17.5 at the moment and I'm running 56/14 gearing, I will eventually go to a 13.5. It never seems to run hot but I really have not pushed it much.

Castle is running the 1 cell Johnny without a fan. Its not like you have a 550 hooked up and running SC. Just make sure it gets a little fresh air and check the temp a few times.

You could also take the case off the MMP, remove the heatsink, clean it off real good, use some of this to reapply the heatsink

And then reassemble the controller. No fan and no unnecessary drain on the battery.

Thank You, it looks like my local Radio Shacks have some of that adhesive.

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

Mamba max pro SCT edition 2400kv. Thought it would be perfect but the motor is too long and hits the lower rear link connection on the skid. Damn!

Hi there i have manage to put that combo without any issues on my wraith.
this is what i did.
first. you have to dremmel a bit the lower rear link. next you have to buy 8 washers and 4 screws longer than stock 0.5mm (to tight and so get thru the hole. i will explain more ahead).
Now you have to disassemble the transmission of the skidplate, then this is what you are going to do.
Put 2 washers betwen the transmission and the skidplate of the wraith (i put mines with a bit of superglue just to hold it until i tighten the 4 screws.
remember 2 washers for screw, and buy another set of 4 screws longer than stock 0.55 (aprox size of the washers) to give it hight so that it doesnt hit the lower link.
after that, dont forget to put a bolt inside the transmissions to hardened them.
mount again everything and plug the motor wires like this, red to red, white to black, and black to white.
I am running mine on 2 s lipo 5000mah 50c, it gives about 2 hours run without any issues, full throtle in a place with no hills, flat dirt and a litle of sand too.
I moved the battery up to the front, and put the esc where the rx was, and the rx i put it in the ground of the passenger seat. Remove the plastic betwen the dashboard and the shocks to fit the battery because i put a 4 mm plug direct sodder to the mamba max pro and turn the battery to the front to plug the wires directly to my vennon hardcase 4 mm female. In the future maybe i will put another 2 s lipo 5000mah 50c in series to get 4 s, this one now in the back in the original place ;). but i guess before that i will have lots of things to upgrade.
the thing i am feeling right now, its a litle cogging when you are starting to move, and a litle top speed, i would like to have a litle more top speed, but that i can make it by 2 ways, gear it up and also put 32 pitch gears or i will buy a 3s lipo and keep the 2s for trailing, or (what i want is get another 2s equal to mine to put them in series and make 4s) (i am running with stock in this setup with no issues) and the motor doesnt it gets hot, either the esc, IM IMPRESSED, EVEN ON SAND FULL THROTLE, ALWAYS COOL AS ICE, my fear was that because i live in brasil in the city of fortaleza and the average temps here are about 28 degrees (average) but its not dificult to have a 34 or 36 degrees.
best regards if you need pics let me know

Great sticky, thanks for all the useful info. I'm thinking about putting the Tekin Pro4 w/ Mamba Max Pro in my Wraith and was wondering if the Venom 5400mah 20C 2s I have would be ok in there or should I use something with a higher c rating?

Thanks to Harley and others who have provided this great information!

I've browsed most of this thread, but still have a few questions:

I will probably use the Tekin Redline or Pro4.

1) I get the impression that the Mamba Max Pro is extremely popular and the Tekin RS (Pro) less so. Is this related to features? Price? Does the Tekin RS (Pro) have any advantages over the MMP?

2) Is it possible/practical/idiotic to use a single ESC (MMP?) and switch different motors in/out depending on what you want to do that day? EX: switch between a Pro4 3300 and Holmes 35t TorqueMaster Pro using the same ESC?

3) It seems that the wide variety of motors discussed here has something to do with the Wraith having multiple personalities ("mountain trail runner, rock racer, mud bogger and any form of backyard bashing that can be dreamed up!"), but is it in reality much more crawler than anything else? A crawler in sheep's clothing?

One good setup will do about everything you need. The MMP is a more robust system, I don't think the RS Pro would handle the Pro4.

The Wraith can wear many hats, and suite many budgets. Depending on what you spend though you can get your wraith to do almost all of them with a single setup.

Is anyone running a 45t motor? I think its gonna be a little slow for my liking but it came with the fx-r I got so I thought I would throw it in. I looked through the thread but didn't see any recommendations for gearing with a 45t. The stock spur is 80t right? What would be a starting point for the pinion?

I had a 21 turn titan which I liked, but it just went up in smoke. I put a 45 turn integedy motor in that I had. I am running 20/80 gearing (stock). On 3 s it crawls good and has fair wheel speed. On 2s, it is pretty slow. Probably good for crawling only, but I like to throw out an occasional donut at times:ror:

A 10.5 is faster than a 13.5, the 13.5 is about as fast as I would suggest anyone goes of you want the low speed control. A 10.5 will not crawl well.

Switch the gearing to 32 pitch, 60/14 is a nice combo on that system.

Harley, a while back you suggested 60/14 for a Tekin 10.5 and MMP combo. Duties will be trail runs with some crawling, being that this will be my second Wraith which is currently running a Tekin 17.5 with 54/14 and stock RipSaws on non weighted Axial Rockster wheels. Would you still suggest 60/14.

By the way, Thank You, for all the help that you have been giving here and in all your other threads.

Try the 60/14 and see what you think. If you want a little more speed step up to a 15 pinion. Just watch your heat.

Sorry for this horribly noobish question, but could some one post a direct link to the pinion/spur gear (either 87/15 48p or 54/10 32p) I need for my Wraith. I am having a horrible time finding a set that I know will fit. Just not sure what exactly to search for.

Sorry,

Scott

Just put in Integy Matrix Pro Lathe 35T, using stock ESC, BEC and running 3S lipo's, 84/16 gearing and it's running really hot. Need different gearing? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would think 5.25:1 like you're running would be pretty good. How long are you running it when you notice this?

I would check your drivetrain for binds first then change the gearing if you don't find anything. To check for binds, just take the pinion gear off and spin the wheels slowly by hand, feeling for any resistance.

im running a Traxxas 32p/50t spur and RRP 32p/23t pinion with a Velineon VXL3S and overdrive diff gears.
how is this gonna go for FOFF1?

am i completely off on this combo?
