STRC Short Wheel Base Axial Bronco.
This is a build thread using the STRC short wheelbase chassis kit equipped with Axial parts. Ive always wanted to use the Tamiya Bronco body for its great detailing but i wanted the truck to be AXIAL based. My SCX10 could not accomodate the body hence the STRC conversion kit. This was also a parallel build with fellow forum and Instagram (RCdabbler) buddy johnnyluv. We both purchased the STRC conversion chassis and the building was started. It was really interesting to see how each project began to take shape and how it took different directions in terms of parts used and where they were located on the truck. It was also intriguing how we both each encountered different problems and the solutions we used to solved them. Binding is problem you have to deal with depending on the wheelbase you shoot for. The solution is not a simple one piece replacement and all is well type. The solution is a combination of shock length, link length and the axle drive angle. You have to find a happy medium where everything works smoothly without binds and you have proper front wheel caster angle. A lot of time was spent experimenting in this part of the build because i was aiming towards a 9.5 inch wheelbase.
Wheelbase is close to 9.5 inches. The scale Bronco body is by Tamiya. GearheadRC 1.9 Champ 190 Beadlock wheels are combined with RC4WD Dick Cepek Mud Country tires. RC4WD shocks keeps the truck nicely suspended . The Bronco is bottom heavy as each axle is equipped with BeefTubes; each aluminum wheel weighs in at 4.4 ozs without the tire. The spare tire was removed in favor of light weight and better weight distribution. The Battery was relocated to a lower and sideway position behind the axle.
I'm extremely happy with the outcome of this project. It runs well.It has great torque. The suspension works great despite not having oil dampening(i kept internals void of oil; just a few drops to keep pistons lubed). This was a long time in the making; Nov 2014 was build-start. Jan 2015 was completion date; means it runs and the body is finished but kinks have to be worked out and body has to get more detailing. August 1, 2015 was its Maiden voyage at Orchard Beach, The Bronx. It performed well and is a lot of fun.
Let me know what you think. By the way...an rc car or truck is constantly evolving so this Bronco will continue getting better. i will be working on installing headlights, taillights, possibly a winch and hoping to get a Willy pilot in the drivers seat. I may replace the speaker and MP3 player for another sound module but that is still up for debate. Im also mulling over a different link steering setup. In order for the links to clear the chassis when fully compressed i had to mount them under the steering knuckle. This lowers the links which interferes which your rock clearance. on a stock SCX10 the links are above the knuckle. im gearing towards two links attached to servo horn...the thoughts are still swirling in the head but eventually i will get done to the truck.

I want to thank paleblue46 for his purchase of some items i was selling. That's what funded the start of this project.
There was no donor rig for the conversion kit so a lot of the items used were spare parts i had lying around.

Of course in order to attach the trailer you need a hitch. An AJSmachine trailer hitch is up to the task.
