Rear axle options and strength

Reversing the ESC and motor has no effect at all, unless you are running a brushed motor with advanced timing. In which case you would want to retard the timing the same amount as the advance, so when run in reverse signal it still has the advance. Brushless is a non issue, it is just how the signal is interpreted

Switching two of the motor leads is all that's needed for a direction change.

Only if running non-sensored motors.

Most sensored motor have some degree of timing built into them. Not wise to run them in "reverse."

Also, some esc's will not allow motor direction to be changed in the programming. This varies by brand.

Much of this is becoming an issue in 10th scale off road racing with 3/4 gear transmissions and mm/rm drive, as well as 4wd motor placement.

Buy cheap, buy twice. Stick with the quality stuff, VP for the win.
