Project SR-71: A Stealth R1 Build

Haven't tried any other types of setup no. I wanted the droop front to have max grip, but I also didn't want the rear axle trying to get under the front when climbing and flip over backwards.

Couple of quick progress pics. Got the new shock mounts drilled, not as nicely as HRDROKN did his, but they will work. Rear axle cleaned up, rebuilt with the adjustable link mounts. Also rebuilt the shocks with 25w oil, mine held 99% of their fluid which was surprising as I've seen lots of complaints about them being very leaky. Also got some spade to bullet connector leads made up for the new 35t motor as I dislike soldering directly to the tabs on the can.

Looks good, you gave yourself a lot of adjustability with as many holes you drilled for the shock mounts....can't wait to see it put back together.

It's getting really close now. Putting the front axle back together tonight after doing the full strip down and clean up last night. The cvds don't have a locking grub screw at all which is thought was odd but I guess they have designed them to never get to an angle where they could fall out. Then I just need some M3 rod ends and threaded shafts to install the lower links. I'm trying my hardest to have it ready for the weekend so I can go play.

I've pulled the trigger on the rear steer setup now, except I'm not buying Junfac's kit. I've got the original plastic c-hubs and knuckles that I just replaced from the front and the original plastic servo mount from the kit. Now, I know that the rear axle portal gear shaft spaces are 1mm bigger than the fronts [6mm], so I can't just drop in the original outdrives. But, there is nothing stopping me from buying a 'replacement' front portal gear set and dropping them into the rear axles for the same 5mm shaft holes. So I grabbed those, plus another set of their CVDs and heavy duty steering rods. Doing it this way I pay about $3 extra than the kit, but I get CVDs and the bigger steering links included in that price. I really love Junfac for offering replacement parts instead of having to buy a full set of axles or something.

Front axle 100% complete and looking very sexy. I need to trim down some of the screw ends and put a very slight bend in the large steering link, bit I'm happy with it so far. A mate gave me some M3 set screws and rod ends for the Wraith links I bought, but I still need 6x more balls for those ends.

Making good progress these days. Brought everything over to a mate's place and we pieced it together. A couple of things need changing, but they're very minor. The way the motor wires run will be changed to a safer route and I'll be bending the steering link and also taking a little bit out of the knuckles to increase steering angle. But the rig looks great, I like how the axles are clocked and the position of everything on the chassis.

That rig has come a long ways man, it looks sick with those aluminum hubs and knuckles. I have been itching to get those, but my lady is cracking down on my spending habits, but hopefully by the time the warm weather comes around I can get some more things done to my rig. I see you changed our all your bearings, what brand did you go with on them?

Thanks mate, yeh the alloy stuff is awesome. I'm tempted to buy the same parts for the rear steer setup but just the c-hubs and knuckles clock in over $50. I've used Avid sealed bearings exclusively throughout the rig.

That's cool, yeah I just ordered some Avid sealed bearings yesterday. I haven't had issues with my bearings since I've had my r1, but it seems like everyone else has so I ordered them to be sure I had them and since I have been bored lately and need something to do rather than play video games.

Those are the 7-degree hubs and the axle is clocked correctly in that the hubs are directly parallel to the ground when the wheels are on instead of at an angle.

Derb,
Post some pictures with those sick ass wheels and tires on the rig so we can see the finished product.

Are those front axle plates the gmade low CG battery and servo plates?

Yep those are the low cg pieces from junfac. And yes I'll try and get some pics asap. I ran it on the weekend and got mud on it straight away. Kind of pissed me off since it was so clean, but I'll get the toothbrush out and clean it up.

Yeah hard to keep em clean for sure, especially when it's waterproof. I always want to play in the mud, water, and snow but hate the cleaning afterwards. I just ordered my aluminum C-Hubs, Knucklers and rear axle adapters yesterday and I guess CKRC has been waiting on thier shipment of knuckles so I probably won't have my order until next week. I was hoping to have them saturday and put them on, but thats okay I can wait. I might to pick up a pair of those low CG plates though, they make it looks so clean even though I probably wouldn't use the battery plate thuoght, but it would still look cool though.

Running a smaller battery down on that plate does wonders for your CoG. I've also discovered that my GoPro camera fits on there perfectly for awesome footage of trail runs.

Well since the GoPro is on my wishlist i will definetly have to get those plates for that main purpose!...thanks for the idea.

I know I'm being slack with the lack of pics, sorry about that. It's clean and everything so I'm just being lazy. Got my parts from Junfac for the rear steer and another Hitec HS-5646WP servo, so just waiting on the rear steer computer from PunkRC now. But there will be some visual changes coming up real soon too. In keeping with the theme, I'm getting a set of black G-Transition shocks off a mate to replace my red ones. I've also been looking at the black, waterproof HPI servo and I can get them for $5 less than the Hitec servos. Even though I just bough another Hitec, I'm gonna buy two HPIs now so that everything is black on black with a hint of red from the wheels and shock ball joints. With the electronics hidden under the carbon fibre it's going to be very dark, evil looking and awesome!

Nice man looks like you have some work to do, that 4WS will be an interesting project indeed. I was contemplating that at one point but went with the dig instead. I can't wait to see the pix, quit being lazy and take some pix of that rig!....I should get my aluminum knuckles and hubs today hopefully. Weather is getting nicer around here so I might have to take out some of my other rigs and play a little.
