Portal Axle build

When they are available you should try a gen3 with the ar44 lockers, gears, and unis that come on the scx10 2.0.

We expect the axles to be available after we are successful with our Kickstarter campaign. That will probably be Jan or Feb of next year. It is a good idea about using the new gears from Axial. I have no idea when we will be able to get them but it will probably be a few months from now. We are already talking about how to test those out. Did you read our minds or something?

The first generation was great but we switched over from the SDI4x4 gear set to the Ascender gear set. This required a rework of the axles which we have dubbed gen2. Instead of Sketchup and mustard we are using Autodesk Fusion 360 now.

New gears have been created instead of using off-of-the-shelf pinion gears. This meant we have to change up the housing a little. We actually make the portal housings thinner now with these new gears.

We want these axles to work for a multi-axle build which means we need a secondary input housing. I created that and worked out the details.

There are six screws that attach the secondary housing to the main axle housing.

We also updated the gear design and changed out the pinion type for custom ones that I designed around a pin-shaft system.

Now the front axle. Again, I had to change up most of the gen2 axle bits to fit the new parts. I modeled up the CVD axles and then attempted to fix the axle around them.

And wrap it all up with some link mounts.

Following along here, and also designing my own portals.

In regards to OD/UD, it really isn't that complicated assuming gear availability isn't an issue. For instance, you stated that you're using 11t and 23t 32p gears...11t being the smallest you'd most likely want to use for ideal tooth contact...you could design the upper gear pocket to fit a 12t, then a 22t can be used in the lower position, giving you an OD option simply by swapping a few gears, which would still use the same center-center distance.

May not be what you're after, but worth a second thought.

23/11=2.1:1
22/12=1.83:1

That is also what I was thinking through. In our case the max size for the upper is 11T as the housings are designed for that. Good suggestions though.

We haven't launched the KS yet. We expect it will be next month. We will announce it for sure!

We just got done selling 20 axles pairs in a pre-production campaign. That went very well and we are working with the participants of that campaign with feedback.

I want set based on the new ar44 gears and under/overdrive gears. That will be just awesome with much better ground clearance!!
I will support the Kickstarter for sure either way.

Any thoughts on doing a set of axles that are narrow enough to fit under the Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin/MF01X bodies?
