Panther Tires - Questions

Playing devil's advocate... Didn't you just describe all rules?

there's a fine line between suffocation and stimulation, but thats a whole new debate:lol:"thumbsup"

I'm Interested to see what you're Ideas are and see where you're heading, without giving away any secrets may be the challenge. kinda tough with this kind of open discussion.

Any Idea when you were going to start testing? and who? wink wink "thumbsup"

Maybe I am out of line by saying this but... if size is so critical, why hasn't a height limit (max and min) been set by your sanctioning body? Standardization is a good thing from my perspective. As this portion of the R/C hobby gets bigger, this will be more critical in the very near future.

The tire height limit wouldn't really matter.... it's the tire height to wheelbase ratio that is the killer. Anything taller than 5" on a wheelbase 12.5" or less is just asking for trouble. Not only that, most run smaller axle combos and once you go bigger than 5" tall tire, breakage begins. Only the 2.2 Clod rigs want 5"-6" tall tires to help for under axle clearance..... although that tire height to wheelbase ratio is the killer again.

Most folks that want the "tall" or "big" 2.2 tire are the bashers or non Comp guys. Many people, including myself have dumped a lot of money in hybrid "big" 2.2 tires that end up being ran a few times then tossed onto the junk shelf. For Nats '06 in my 2.2 Clod I had about $130 in my tires, I can't even give them away for free and I have been trying for over a year now:lol:

I'm working on the reply. I'm slow.

This thread is repeating itself over and over which is good we are gaining info along the way. All I can say is make a tire under Toyofasts description. I and a few others feel he is a 100% in the right."thumbsup" Sorry, If I came off as bashing the new guys earlier it's not what I meant to do. Words here can be taken many ways. I could describe what I was meaning by my comment but hey no reason to pollute your thread. This is great though finally a manufacture who listens to us or all and asks us for input. As a result these tires are going to be great.

Anyways I made tall Losi Zombie Max soft compound 2.2 tires. The tall sidewalls made the sidewalls fold and buckle under the truck once the side hills were approached. I tried many foam setups to no avail. When flexing the truck seemed very unstable and would flip without warning. The tires only had one advantage and that was clearance over sharp jutted obstacles like logs and small rocks. That advantage was few and far between as the negative would kill me for points around every sloped corner of the course.

When you move to a smaller tire 4.50 to 5.00 like Toyofast is describing you end up with a far more stable and predictable tire. It's almost like 1:1 scale racing, low profile tires handle corners far better then thick Buick tires. The tire is more controlled or restrained by the wheel. The tire reacts better with the terrain and angles as it is more controlled and not loose and fumbling.

Compound may play a HUGE and vital role, but rock tires are not based completely on compound alone otherwise we would all be running slicks. I am a 110% sure you will come through with the compound. But, I'm going to say pin treads don't work on some if not the majority of rock terrains here, it's my opinion. People were running custom enlarged gladiators for a while, noticed how they faded away quickly after the losi's came out? Pins just don't have enough snatch when it comes to sharper rocks. Lugs latch on and hold, pins scuff. That is why pins work well on slick smooth rock as there is nothing to grab onto. It's once you hit the sharper rock that lugs really go to work. Lugs are like gear teeth they help lift the truck over stuff.

Hey toyotfast,
Most folks that want the "tall" or "big" 2.2 tire are the bashers or non Comp guys. I like free stuff, lemme get a pic of these hybrid tires you made"thumbsup"

I'm with Toyo on this. Along with Toyofast,I've built some crazy big frankenstein tires myself out of MANY different tread section and sidewalls from various makers. I'd hate to guess what I've spent building all the tires I've built.:lol: All of my hybrid/frankenstein tires are sitting collecting dust or have been traded off. In 2.2 class,I'd like to see a tire about 4.75-5.00 tall/2.250-2.500 wide. Just a touch over the competition but not craziness and that size could be delt with on many platforms.

In super class, the size of the XL is a good size. I prefer a bit skinnier though. Here's what I did with my old XL's and they performed their best like this....

Still yet, they wouldn't clean out very well and needed better latteral traction. As of right now,the best performing hybrid tire I've built has to be my Badland XL's. Still a touch wider than I prefer but I'll skinny them up if I decide to run them this year.

Yup, I really liked my 2.2 Badlands, the knobbies are big enough to act like lugs yet still provide multiple biting edges.

If they were stickier, narrower, and a bit smaller........................

I'd like to add something... If you nail the Tread design and the Compound. I would really like to see more then 1 2.2 Size... 4.75in, 5in, 5.5in and even a 6in.. Plus the 7.25in Super Class tire..... I like to see more choices in sizes. I know it's a lot to ask, but it would be sweet.

what you need to do is make a tire like the tires that the baja trucks run in your soft compound for the guys in Utah and similar terrain. something with gobs of tread exposed, all of it in a very sticky compound. or, better yet, go for something like the Maxxis Holy Rollers BMX tires. checkerboard pattern, sticky compound. should work a treat for the guys with slick rock. now for the guys who need an agressive tread, the gekos but with taller, stiffer lugs. height around 5", maybe 5.25". for the scale guys, BFG Mud Terrains in a nice, soft, sticky compound, in 1.9 at about 3.75" tall, 2.2 at about 4.75" tall. then something like the Irok radials, but with taller lugs, in your soft compound, to fit a 1.9 rim, and make it about 4.25" tall. in 1:10, that scales out to about a 42" tire, and under larger bodies (bronco, rubicon, possibly the landy, ect) I think I recall hearing that scaling out to about a 33" tire

Exactly, it's already been established that big manufacturers are exempt.

For your info, we are working on something for major manufacturers. But, because it hasn't been implemented yet, you guys get your panties in a bunch. Believe it or not, it's harder for a major manufacturer to become a vendor here, for various reasons. Also, most of them wouldn't be starting threads in the vendors market, they will sell to our distributors instead. This site is also growing/changing constantly. Let the admins and mods worry about giving the blue star speech, thanks.

Exactly. Here is what I posted about Losi, same goes for Panther.

It is difficult for some of the larger RC company's like Losi or Proline to purchase a vendor star because of their internal processes.

We are giving Losi the same opportunity that we gave Proline (which Proline said they did not need).

I know it breaks the typical vendor rules but Jason and I make this exception for a certain time frame because of the potential positive impact from having such large RC company's participating in the RC Crawling world.

I am going to clean up all these vendor posts so we can get this thread back on topic.
