Rookie cops shoot 14-year-old dead after teen shot at fleeing man in South Bronx - NYPOST.com

Police shot and killed an armed teen in the South Bronx early today after the suspect chased and shot at another man, then refused to drop his gun, police said.

Two rookie cops heard shots fired near East 151st Street and Courtlandt Avenue around 3 a.m. and ran in the direction of fire, police said. The uniformed officers saw Shaaliver Douse, 14, of the South Bronx, chasing another person through the streets, according to cops.

Douse, who was arrested in May on attempted murder charges for shooting a 15-year-old, fired at the man running on East 151st Street this morning, police said.

Two rookie cops, assigned to the high-crime area on an Impact team, just months after graduating police academy, identified themselves as police officers and told Douse to drop the gun, according to an NYPD statement..

Douse refused and one of the officers fired one round, striking the gunman in the jaw, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators recovered a blood-spattered Astra A 100 9mm semi-automatic handgun at the scene, cops said.

No one else was injured, according to police.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly dismissed suggestions that the cops should have wounded the boy instead of killing him.

“You shoot to stop. You can’t shoot to wound. That only happens in Western movies,” Kelly said at a press conference at NYPD headquarters.

“Regardless of the circumstances, this is a crushing blow to any parent,” he said.

Asked if Douse was the youngest person to be fatally shot by a cop, Kelly replied, "I don't recall any other at this juncture. There may have been, I just don't recall."

Douse's family was furious.

“They're making it all up,” said his aunt, Quwana Barcene. “There was no gun. It’s all a cover-up. It’s what the police do. They kill us and cover it up.

“It’s not fair. It was my sister’s only child. You shouldn’t have to bury your child. My beautiful nephew got shot in the head. A mother of one now has to bury her only child.”

Douse was slain yards from Alfred E. Smith HS, where relatives said he went to school.

The two officers, ages 26 and 27, were taken to Jacobi Hospital for ringing in the ears and trauma, police said.

Douse had a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 23, for weapons possession, records show.

I don't care what color you are...if you wanna be a thug and a killer and you wanna break the law then you deserve the punishment you get. this and the whole trayvon martin George Zimmerman fiasco is just proof positive of how messed up the world has gotten. im sure the media will dig up photos of the kid that was shot and killed that make him look like a cute and innocent little kid....kinda like trayvon:roll:

15 year old and possessing a gun!! At that age a person is not even close to being matured and decisions are influenced by hormones and not by logical thinking.

the kid had an attempted murder charge and accesory charge pending so he is no innocent teen..point a gun at the cops and thats what you get

The parents always say that there was no gun and the kid was a good kid all the while they have warrants and other charges. Blame the parents not the cops. I think a case like this the parents should have to pay for the cost of the investigation

The only issue I have with the whole deal is the fact that the kid was shot in the jaw. As far as I know their training should have had them shoot center mass not going for a head shot. So either the cop was a good shot and just forgot his training or is a fawking terrible shot.

the only real contraversy so far is that it was 2 rookie cops..some are questioning why 2 rookies would be on patrol in a rough neigborhood, i dont think it would of made any difference..race wise i doubt this story goes far for obvious reasons..maybee the gun thing will be used

The first article I read was from Fox News. Clear, concise, and mostly fact. It linked to the story I posted. The slant on it is so glaring that Stevie Wonder could see it. On the job since Jan, I would not say experienced, but probably the when they were in the office, all the other guys who had been around before heard the question " who wants to go to the shittiest part of town ?" and they were last to say "Not it".

i will check out the fox story
its a shitty gig im sure..supposedly thats the policy in ny..to throw them into the fire..i read this earlier

For more than seven years, the first assignment for nearly all rookie New York City police officers has been to patrol "impact zones" with the highest crime rates, often on foot and without backup. The program is credited with decreasing crime but has also been blamed for officer burnout and overly aggressive tactics

I see it all of the time around here, no not shootings.... People don't realize that they are raising a little person. One that is going to grow up and be an adult. An adult faced with decisions and consequences. The adults leave them out on life's ledge with little or no guidance. Then, they wonder why the child turns to drugs, sex, or violence. A 15yo with a gun and the police are at fault for his death? No, not hardly.

Your jaw is only about 1' away from the center of your chest. That's not that far for a real life moving target refusing to drop a weapon. I highly doubt the police were point blank with the kids hands up going for a face shot.

I suppose if the darwin award nominee was on the move then it wouldn't be a terrible shot. I will however give credit to them only firing once and not 48 times and only having one hit.

Hell, here in Yuma 2 cops shot a homeless dude who was 40 feet away holding a rock 8 times. Same cops also shot a dude who was in the middle of a farmers field threatening to kill himself. He did not point the gun at them, just refused to drop it, and they ventilated him really well. I think 4 vents.

The local police went to the Judge Dredd school of police tactics.
