Next rig?

The Bronco arrived today, I’m very pleased. Parts are going to be here Monday to mod it, along with the XT60 to Deans adapter I ordered, so it’ll be sitting until then. I was surprised how solid the plastic bumpers feel, makes me rethink the need to buy the SSD replacements I was looking at.

My LHS got a couple of the G8’s in today, they were on boxing one when I arrived. It looks like a solid rig out of the box. I was impressed with the metal servo horn, metal diff covers, and the metal rig plastic beadlock wheels. The tires felt sticky and the foams were soft but not excessively so. I’m not mr scale, but the stickered on windows do look pretty lame. I’m still pleased with my choice of the TRX-4 Bronco with the 2 speed and electric lockers.

It was the first time I’d gone to my LHS in Flagstaff. The owners seem very nice and they had a good selection of parts. They were cool with my checking everything out and mollesting the G8. I’ll definitely give them some business. The husband is crawling a TRX-4 Defender and hosts monthly trail runs, I’m looking forward to the one on 1/26.

RE: Gen8...

What I dislike more than the blacked-out windows (Which can be corrected with some work, or by buying a clear body whenever they come out) are the effed-up fender flares.

Scout fenders are round, and not squared off - and why anyone would make add-on squared-off flares and then cut round arches in them I will never understand.

Well, the fronts are cut round and the rear are cut sort of squared, but that makes it even worse!

I think just going all the way and squaring off the actual cut of the front fenders with a Dremel to at least make them match is by far the least offensive option.

Otherwise, I suppose it's pretty decent for a budget body.

I can't stand the TRX4 Sport body unless it's got all the bed accessories added, and the grille is still awful.

Underneath, though - a damn good truck for a very fair price.

Now if Traxxas would just make all their windows clear like their special Adventure Edition & Camel Trophy Defender models without adding $50 to the price!

BTW - if you look closely at the last pic of the Redcat front fender - looks like they rounded it off to allow them to put their LOGO on the trailing edge!

Hack 'em up, I say... just pretend they're cut for bigger tires -

Looks like you could order an extra set of the rounded front flares, round out the rear fender and install the front flares out back with a little trimming, dremeling, and hacking. Of course, you're still stuck with blacked out windows which is a huge peeve for me. It's one of the things I hate most about my TRX-4 Sport body.

You definitely made the right choice with the TRX-4 Bronco IMO. It even fits your username! Congrats on the new truck!

After seeing Harley's Redcat Gen 8 video it still looks like it has some of Redcat's bad roots. Maybe Gen 9 will be better.

My view is that the front fenders look so out of whack that (even though it is not "original") you may as well make them match the rears.

It's the reverse of a square peg in a round hole effect... ;-)

I do agree with what was said before regarding 1:1 vehicles - people do sometimes cut fenders and then install flares that don't match the original bodywork.

However, part of me just wishes that they chose to keep closer to a real IH Scout II and just enlarged and flared the round fender openings.

I'm feeling somewhat exhausted by the discussion of the whole thing at this point, however!

It's an "OK" body, one that I personally would definitely modify if I ever picked up a clear version to paint up and use.

But...

(heh-heh)

I went and did a bad thing!

Yes, I agree - you made a great choice by picking up a Bronco!

I even joined the club, my Defenestrator (Defender) arrived yesterday, and I have been readying a couple of wheel and tire sets for use on it as well as preparing for the arrival of a few hop-ups.

Very excited to put the rubber down on the trail shortly!

Why does the body even need fender flares?! Every since Axial put them on the Dingo a lot of people seem to think they are required. They aren't. They usually look hideous on RCs just like they look hideous on 1:1s. And 1:1 guys typically only do it to keep their truck road legal or to keep their paint from getting destroyed by the debris that the tires kick up.

I agree completely, but the main issue is that practically all off-road R/C vehicles are sold with massively oversize wheels and tires - totally out of scale.

Thereby making big flares the rule of the day...

That's what sells, unfortunately.

Running 4.19" tires on 1.55" or 1.7" wheels looks much more realistic and would not require such large fender openings, but little Johnny with his first RTR crawler would be upset that he couldn't "Monster Jam" over every obstacle in his path!

Tamiya, MST, and RC4WD are some of the few more scale-accurate RTR manufacturers, otherwise it is up to the end-user to "make" the vehicle more like a 1:1.

Of course rigs come with larger than stock (scale wise) tires. Most of the buying public wants a realistic representation of a modified rig they cannot afford in real life. Very few people want a tiny tire clad rc because they aren't nearly as capable on the mildest terrain compared to a basic rig on 4.5" tires.

i was running 1.55 dirt grabbers on my truck for 2 whole days at proline by the fire last year. with an OD of 2.99"... after that, give me a rig with 4.19 tires (MUCH more scale and still "modified" looking) and i can get over ANYTHING.

if i drove something like a bomber on 2.2 i would probably get bored real quick hahaha

this is, of course, entirely my own opinion and i don't knock anybody for running tires larger than 4.19 OD. but those stock TRX4 tires are YUGE.
