Natedog's Honcho kit build

and thanks for sharing.

I need to paint the exterior of my thrashed Honcho RTR
lexan body as well.

Did you do any sanding...
or simply clean the surface and paint ?

just curious as to how much of the surface scratches,
gouges, etc. could be removed or filled.

as well... wondering if the scratched windows
could be buffed out some ?

I must've missed it...
what paint did you use for the exterior ?
 
Love your rig, you have a lot of ideas Along the same line as me. Just I haven't gotten to them quite yet. Like cutting the top of the bed section off to the outside paint on the lexan body. I'll be keepin a eye on this thread!! Keep up the good work!

Thanks, I didn't sand or anything the scratch marks are just from previous rock rash. I just washed it real good with hot water and a little liquid dish washing soap like normal Lexan body prep. I don't know how much the surface could be smoothed out, I never tried.

I used an old can of Pactra lexan spray paint, let it sit in really hot bowl of water and then shook it extra well, test sprayed on workbench and then went for it. ;-)"thumbsup"

EDIT: Forgot to say that I cleaned the body, reinforced it with fiberglass mesh type drywall tape, then ShoeGoo inside mostly, but a little of both on the outside too...body was really hammered. Let it dry overnight, washed body again and then painted.

No, it's usually hot as you know what here most of the summer, but it was a week of cool evenings and the can of paint was having birthdays (like 10years old can) since it was a leftover and I wanted it to have really good pressure and fully mixed lol.

Yes, in a car on hot day here and you'll have interesting interior paint scheme. :lmao:

Rockhugger and I went to Bayside Adventure Scale 7/13/14 in Newcastle and had a good time, thanks for the hospitality, sweet raffle (lucky guy won the Deadbolt SCX from CKRC, etc.), sweet scale trails, very nice race track, horsepower hill, food truck and good to see everybody again!

Oh yeah almost forgot, it was nice to meet the new owner of CKRC (Jason), thanks for supporting us at Axialfest G6 and at Bayside Scale crawl! It was fun and good to see old friends that've been crawling for years....hadn't seen some of yall in many moons.

My Honcho below the Ring of Fire bridge challenge, I had third fastest time at 57 seconds. I ran the ring of fire bridge three times, fell off the first two times, but made it the third time...it's harder than it looks especially with 1.9 Ripsaws.





I bought these neat little stainless steel S-Biners at REI, a single 10lb and a pair of 5lb rated, they work great for tow strap and winch quick hookups and have survived Axialfest. The 5lb rated are perfect and have been put through more than that without any problems. They were about $5 a pair for 5lb rated and $5 for one 10lb rated. "thumbsup"



Just bought another Hitec HS-7950TH and noticed that one of the gaskets had slipped during assembly, an easy but annoying fix.

I like them both as a matter of fact. I drove Nates truck a little this weekend and I can say its thoroughly hooked up, oh there's a feature at bayside called Amperage Hill- this Honcho made light work of it. Sorry no pics or video, it was just a bit HOT and I don't think our brains were working well.

and ya can't drive two at the same time ;-)

Your decision lay with wheel base choice 12.3" or 12.0"
the remainder means little...
'cuz stock sucks :mrgreen:

Thanks! Both...lol...I'm a Toyota guy, but the Deadbolt SCX has really caught my eye lately. It's almost same dimensions as G6 Jeep and shares the same rollcage plastic parts. I'd go Honcho or Deadbolt, but I like the G6 Jeep too. Buy one and buy another body to swap out later...two trucks in one.

Yep, and if you run 12.3" wb you can swap between Honcho, Deadbolt and G6 bodies, just might have to trim front fenders slightly. "thumbsup"

Nice and congratulations, read up and you'll be ready when she arrives! 8) All you need is a few basic mods or upgrade as you break it, don't need all the blingy junk.
 
Racer's Edge servo horns are crap, this is the third one I've killed (two on Wraith and one on Honcho) and upon close inspection they all seem to go the same way. Notice the front side is bent up next to main splined end screw hole.




Backside shot, notice how thin the aluminum is around the splined hole and the two cracks (one at each clamping screw) in this thin area running parallel to the splines. The servo horn flexes (the main screw and the two little clamping screws were tight and loctited), then it cracks and the splines strip out...bad design and low quality metal. Notice the sloppy machining marks in the low quality Racer's Edge horn too.

Axial hard anodized servo horn next to it for reference of what a good design looks like!

Assortment of 32 pitch pinions to gear down more. Replacement spare servo horn, for cracked and bent horn.






New spurgears, 56T, 57T, and 58Tooth

I roll the original 48P spur/pinion gears...
haven't stripped one yet.

The transmission's internal 48P plastic gears strip easily
if the slipper is set too tight.
But those should be upgraded to metal IMO.
Saves money in the long run.

So why is it that so many choose to utilize
a noisier 32P spur ?

I'd guess durability... possibly alternative gearing selection ?
Tho' my factory 48P plastic spur seems to hold up just fine
and runs smoother and quieter then 32P would. hmmm
Guess I don't understand this trend !?

Mesh is obviously more critical when using 48P...
but I don't seem to have difficulty
establishing a proper mesh.

I like the beefier 32P gears and that's what I run on my Wraith so I don't need as many different spares. I've had little chunks of sand etc. get stuck in my 48 pitch spur and then make lots of noise until I dug them out with my pocket knife...sometimes even with a spur gear cover. I'm running HR steel lightweight tranny gearset so it's strong enough. :)

Unfortunately there are less gearing options with 32 pitch, but I've managed to find good ratiois that work for me.

Yep, pinion will remove spur teeth like a buzz saw. :lmao:

Yes, I love clean assembly and have learned many lessons as the truck progresses.

Thanks, it's my favorite crawler! It might need to be joined by a Deadbolt SCX kept relatively stock.
