motor smokes?

Got a new venom 60t motor, while of running it, a steady stream of smoke starts coming out of the end of the motor opposite the gear. It really seems to get going when I give it just a bit of throttle, just enough to make it start to turn. I can actually see something inside glowing run, then if I run it full speed, it really starts putting the smoke out. Is the motor shot or what?

Smoke = dead motor generally.

All signs point to you needing a new one.

Well, I kept messing with it, didn't figure I'd do anymore damage to it. After running it full throttle for awhile theres no more sparks, glowing parts, smoke, etc. I wouldn't say its fixed, but its not smoking anymore. The part that was glowing was the part inside that the wire is wrapped around, the part that spins. Could it be scrapping something off the inside, metal or something, that would be causing a short or something? The way the venom motor is, there is a plastic cap on the end, and the part that was glowing was underneath the cap, the rest of the motor looked ok, just the part towards the end didn't look too good.

If the armature (part with wire) is glowing, that's real bad...

It sounds like it has a shorten wind or something similar.
Hopefully a couple of the motor guru's might poke their heads in for a better assessment.

The "smoke" was likely the winding insulation burning off.....NOT a good thing!:shock:
While it "may" be working now, it won't be for long. I suggest gathering money for a new motor.

Keep in mind, continuing to run the motor may kill the ESC as well.

Yes, after looking up what the motor parts were called, the armature was the part that was glowing. Kind of on the leading edge, on the outside of it. The smoke was coming from the armature getting hot.

You were likely seeing the copper windings getting hot due to either a short or overloading. This heat caused the winding insulation (usually a varnish of some type) to cook giving off the smoke.
Now that the insulation is mostly gone (looks all bubbly black) you don't have much smoke, but the windings will short/short more until the motor quits.

Lesson learned, no more cheap venom motors.

my 12T titan caught on fire in my SCX-10. Rather expensive experience. Don't ask how it went up in flames, but I was flying through grasses and up she went :roll:

Smoked motors are usually:

1-Overgeared (looking for speed)
2-Excessive load on the motor due to tight gear mesh/axle binding/etc.
3-Not cooled enough due to mud/dirt coating the motor or tight fitted space so it gets no air

Lastly, cheap motors tend to fail a bit easier than better motors. Notice I stated better, not really more expensive.

Charlie's on the mo-nay...Sounds like it was overloaded in some way, shape or form and its melted the insulation and its snow balled from there.
But in saying that venom motors are a bit shit, so it wouldn't surprise me if it had a short straight out the box and then the extra heat caused by the short has melted more etc.

The part that was smoking was the end, where the spring things were pressing on it.(Sorry, don't know my motor terms.) Not sure where all the metal flakes are from, but they're all at the end, didn't appear to be any inside the can when I pulled the armature out.

Well, the windings (the small copper wire on the armature) look fine.

The copper "plates" that wrap aroung the end of the armature are the commutater plates.

Commutater is to the right above.

The brushes (spring loaded squarish bits that run against the commutater) look a bit cooked as do the brush guides.

I'm wondering is something metallic got inside the motor. Hmmm.......

not that i have anything against venom but their motors = cr@p i went thru 2 17t motors in my slash in a week with stock gearing and nimh batterys. n btw ya your motor let the factory smoke loose:lmao:

Yeah the arm looks strangely fine...
Comm looks chewed at very end, but there's no real apparent reason why it would smoke:|:???:

Charlie: That's just venom motors. The cast ally brush hoods they use never line up.

It looks almost like sand around the end of the motor?
