Interest in Rally?

Just a little warm Chad.

Not sure exactly what happened. I had a buddy driving it while I was taking pics and it acted like the lipo cut-off activated. First pack and wasn't ran any harder than any other time. The only thing I can think of is something got wet yesterday that shouldn't have.

Some photos before she went up in smoke

This track is a blast!

That track looks like fun! I like to see the loose dirt flying!

For some reason most racers around here seem to think that offroad racing should be done on dirt that is packed so hard it might as well be asphalt.

We should have an event there. Would be nice to get some Springs people in on the Rally/Mini TT excitement.

Anyone have any ideas on the ESC. Would getting it wet take a pack to get it to fry or are there too many possibilities to narrow it down?

I have gotten two ESC's wet and fried them. Neither one was a catastrophic melt down like that.

I did run a brushed motor that I melted and it looked like that. The motor only ran for about 3 minutes but it was under too much load and the endbell melted. Seems to me like it was a case of running too hot due to load. That sandy terrain where you took pics will put a ton of load on the motor. You should always gear down 2 or 3 teeth for the sand.

That's just my best guess.

I'd love to run at that track!!! Like Jason, I believe trucks should be run on loose tracks, not blue groove clay.

Look how the powdercoat is burned off the heat sink. Either it was pullin amps and got hot or it was on fire.

Generally water will short it and it's done.

I was at the pick-up getting another pack when my buddy started yelling. It was blowing a lot of smoke and got really hot, like a short, and "fizzed" one of the corners. Luckily, it didn't burn anything in the truck except for scorching the pack that was in it.

I ordered another ESC for it, so hopefully the motor is still good.

Also, only the berms are loose. Most of the track is bumpy hard-pack.

Ah, well, not sure if my theory is correct then. :ror:

Was that the Castle SCT esc. Were you running it on 3 cell? I smoked my SCT esc quickly with the 3800 motor and 3 cell.

It was the sidewinder. I did run a 3s in it yesterday (didn't know it was only rated for 2s) but it ran fine for a while today. Maybe the damage was done.

Just took my Rally car out for it's first spin...it's not very fast, but that's probably for the best right now :) I'll have a battery ready for tomorrow's auto-cross...just have to keep the long straights to a minimum.

The Sidewinder and the sct are the same thing. I know the box says that they are capable of 2-3 cell on low KV motors but no where could I find on Castle site what they consider a low kv motor. I can not remember where I saw it, but the 3800kv motor is too much for those esc's on 3 cell. I remember reading about where quite a few people were having issues with them doing that. Mine did not go up in smoke quite as bad as yours, but it only lasted a few minutes on 3 cell.

There was quite a bit of snow packed in there yesterday, so maybe that helped with cooling :ror:

I'm hoping it was due to water on the esc and everything else is okay. We'll see when the new one shows up. I could always run the stock setup until then.
