Guns for under $200

Savage also makes some .22 bolt guns that are very reasonable. You could setup up to a .17 HMR if you want a little more power.

93 ford bronco... Why are you basing a decision around shooting PEOPLE? Should we be reporting you to the athorities?

3/4 of the people in this thread have suggested a .22lr yet you are stuck on a nagant. To me, it sounds like you wanted people to come in and tell you how great of a decision that would be.

i own both riffles i have a mossin and love it but it is not all that fun to shoot more than one or two rounds just to show off the big bang but it is a very accurate riffle they were actually used as sniper riffles back when they were relevant also ammo is 16 dollars a box of 20. if you are looking for one still almost all big gun shops carry them for right around 109 bucks plus papers. now onto the 22 i have a ruger 10/22 that i bought used for 75 bucks and found a cheap scope and i can hit anything i want and shoot all day for pennies also i have changed it from the wooden stock to the arc angel tactical stock for 100 bucks and i use it as a training rifle for drills and what not instead of my ar15 because its cheap to shoot

on the hi point issue im torn i had one with zero issues and then i have seen so many trade ins at the shop i worked for. so for the price great gun to just shoot but if your depending on it for protection its better used as a club because they weigh a ton and cant depend on it actually firing

I'm not saying a .22 won't do damage. But compared to a 7.62 it's a bb gun. Not to mention as a round travels farther it looses velocity. So yes you may be able to kill someone at close range with a .22(if you are a good enough shot to hit the eye) at long range a .22 just doesn't gaurantee a kill. Also. I was not just thinking about killing somone. I said if a situation ever arose where I needed to I would rather have something larger than a .22 to make sure that person is not getting back up.

You shoot someone at long range with your Nagant.....well lets just say I hope you enjoy prison.

Your priorities are whack.

I thought about getting a Mosin Nagant but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet (pun intended). I currently plink with a CZ VZ-58 and a Saiga AK47, both 7.62x39 and a Remington .22. Nothing beats a .22 for plinking.

7.62x39 = $$$$, .22 = cheeeappp rounds.

I recommend a Ruger 10/22. I've shot plenty of them, they are good guns you can keep for a long time since the aftermarket is so strong for them. Tons o' upgrades. You can go full tactical or full competition, everybody makes something for them.

I've never shot a Hi-Point carbine, but I have shot a newer C-9 or whatever their 9mm pistol is called. Never jammed but was kinda heavy and rattle-y. Didn't have a good feel.

I really want a GSG-522 next, but that might be a little out of your price range (about $300). I've seen great reviews on them and they are accurate and quite compact.

You sir need to learn how to read. I said twice. I was not planning on shooting someone. Obviously. I said if a situation ever arose where I needed to, I would prefer a later caliber rifle. Yes people have suggested .22's. However I also said TO ME a .22 is not fun to shoot. Why would I spend more money on a gun that is less fun for me to shoot. Please carefully read every post before you reply next time.

again. I never said I intend to shoot someone. I'm sorry that you can't read what I said multiple times in multiple posts.

You sir need to pull your head out and realize we did read and you multiple times have talked about shooting someone at a distance. Shooting someone with a large caliber rifle at distance is not home defense, it is to kill an enemy. Unless you are in the middle of a combat zone, any form of that kind of talk is cause for concern. Im sure your just an idiot kid that wants to sound big but, can we be sure?

From now on, if you already know what your going to buy, dont come and ask for opinions.

Sounds to me like a good Nerf gun would more your speed Bronco.

Inexpensive, ammo is easy to access, and it might keep you out of prison."thumbsup"

Again. If you take what I said out of context I could see cause for concern. However. When I said IF A SITUATION EVER AROSE WHEN I NEEDED TO SHOOT SOMBODY. Does not mean I'm going to go out and shoot somone. It simply means if my life was threatened and I needed to shoot someone I want to make sure it kills someone. How would you like to need to kill someone, you shoot them and they get back up. Umm. No thanks. The fact that I mentioned shooting at long range has nothing to do with shooting someone. I personally like to shoot at long ranges. It's more challenging then shooting a target 10 feet in front of you. Also, I did not already know what I was going to buy hence the reason for the thread. I had an idea that I would go with the nagant but it was not set in stone until I could not find a gun that was as good of value. You cannot deny that the nagant being only around $100 is the wisest way to go if you want the most bang for your buck. The fact that I have a friend who can get me one for even cheaper than $100 was the deciding fact. As I said in a previous post. I thanked everyone for their suggestions but I had decided to go with the nagant anyways. I had indeed taken everyone's suggestions into account and had researched most of the guns people said I should take a look at and none of them appealed to me. As riceburner said, it is my choice after all.

A little off topic. Is it necessary to post criticizing comments twords me. Calling me a kid who just wants to sound big. A little uncalledfor if you ask me. I have not sent any negative comments tword anyone so I don't see why you should feel the need to send them my way.

What you fail to understand is the cost of the rifle is a drop in the bucket compared to what it costs to feed it. If you have a hard time affording a $200 rifle feeding it with even cheap surplus 7.62x54 will be tough.

You want a challenge for long range, shoot the 10/22 at 200yards. A new or even used 10/22 may cost more than a Nagant up front but feeding it with .22lr is so much more economical. If you can't afford the ammo you might as well just buy a baseball bat.

When you act like a child you are going to be called kid, kid.
At what point in this thread have I acted like a child. Because I made a decision against what everyone else is tellin me I'm a child? So I should buy something I don't want just because someone told me to.

well like I said I'm not worried about ammo because I won't be shooting every weekend. It will probly rarely be once a month due to how far the ranges are dro
My house. I can spend $40 on ammo and I'll be good for a day. Also, like I've said at least 3 times now. a .22 is not fun to me. If someone had suggested to me a rifle of a larger caliber and it had peaked my interest I would have gladly taken it over a nagant. However noone suggested anything that hit my fancy

Any larger caliber in your price range would be crap or used up/on the verge of breaking. Not a good place to be.

If you budget a little more, you should be able to find a decent rifle in a large caliber you are looking for. (I'd budget $300 to $500 for something accurate) Still, for accuracy at the range, .22lr is pretty hard to beat with the right platform. Unless you have to prove "IM A BIG GUY and I DON'T USE SUBSONIC ROUNDS"......well....pony up more cash for the big stuff.

I've shot many, many rounds through this little number here (Remington 597 .22lr) and it has been the most accurate automatic target rifle ever of ANY caliber I've shot. Just keep it oiled up though. .22 or not, I'll match targets with ya.

I just like the punch in the shoulder you get from larger caliber weapons. The .22 has almost no kick. Wich isn't a bad thing. It's just not for me

If your going to get the Mosin I would recommend you buy it from a dealer that you can trust. I have seen several Mosin come through or store that were in very poor condition. These are surplus rifles not new. I would recommend that you have the dealer remove the bolt and clean out the cosmoline from the barrel and check the rifling before you purchase. Make sure you check the stock for cracks. Replacement stock are available but your on a budget and don't want to spend an extra $50-$100 on another stock right out of the box.

Ammo is relatively cheap for the Mosin 880rds for $190 at most retailers. If you look hard enough you can find better deals. As for corrosive primers in surplus ammo, as long as you clean your rifle after you shoot it you will never have any issues. I use surplus 7.62x54R in my PSL-54C all the time. If you want consistent accuracy I would spend some cash on quality new loaded ammo from a reputable manufacturer.

In all the Mosin is a fine rifle if you get a one in good shape. I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever you decide to purchase.

So get a 12-gauge.

A big-bore rifle in your price range is more likely to hurt you than whatever you're pointing it at.

I'm just glad you live far away from me. The thought of you with any kind of weapon scares the shit out of me.

I had hoped I would be able to find one at a gun shop for that exact reason. I don't really care for buying online because you obviously can't inspect what your buying to ensure that it will be in good condition. I'm pretty confident that I can find one at my local gander mountain but hopefully my buddy will be able to sell me the one he has and hopefully it will be in good condition. I've read about the corrosive properties of the surplus ammo. To me having to clean a gun after each use is something I would do anyways. Of course I would prefer to use the new and better ammo and most likely will but if I ever needed to use surplus I would definatly clean after each use.

I thought about getting a shotgun and I'll probly get flamed for saying it. I don't really like shotguns. No perticular reason. I just have a preference to rifles and handguns. I wouldn't think a nagant would hurt me more than what I'm shooting at. I mean isn't that what guns are made to do. Hurt/kill things that your shooting at. I'm glad your afraid. You should be. I would be afraid of anybody with a gun.

There is a difference between fear and respect, you understand that right...?

I only fear idiots with guns because they do stupid things with them.

A shotgun is pretty much the most versatile firearm you can own. Don't trust anyone that does not like shotguns.
