Did you shim the pinion gear when installing the axle on it? that shim will pull the pinion gear towards the axle leaving a bit more clearance in the ring and pinion gears. Without the shim, the pinion and drop into the ring gear more, and that can cause some biding through the rotation.

I'm going 4WS and had to shim both pinions when installing the drive shafts and both are smooth as butter both directions.

Yes I did, on both axles, if not, it was not smooth, and even with them, it was smoother with the third plastic member with the "Chinese" aluminum one
 
Love those GearHead wheels, but I would pay attention to the tightness of the scale hardware you are using on the hubs.

I have a set of these wheels in 2.2" for my Bomber and on my first run the hub hardware loosened up and several actually fell out!

Ended up using extra-long hardware and Loctite.

I have had them for years, I have used them in several cars, and with great force, so far I have not had problems, but the warning is appreciated
