DAKAR Rally Modified Stewart & Stevenson M1079

I lied when I said suspension was done. I really wanted 4 coil overs and 4 dampers on this rig, so we made it happen. Who knows if it will work very well, but it looks awesome! Made some upper mounts that tie into the VP hoops front and rear and on the front we did some spring cups that double as the damper mount. Hopefully the tiny bit of movement won't be an issue or cause any binding, right now I don't think it will but could be a whole different story once it's actually driven.

For now, suspension is done! Going to start on the cab and rear box area next week. Oh and the frame is finally cut to proper length. I love a truck sitting on its own tires.

Nice. Did you mock everything up in full bump while designing the suspension? There are a few things that are helpful when doing this, as pertaining to shock/spring setup and general clearances.

Yeah we went through a few different parts before landing here. It's not perfect but it articulates well and there is no binding, other than sway bar resistance of course. I'll have to wait until it's at running weight to set ride height, the sway bar link lengths and pick some limiter straps. Then the fun shock tuning can commence!

I've got to know: Why are you using trailing/leading arms on the front, but mounting the shocks at the axle?

For looks mostly. Rebelzilla was the initial inspiration for this build and I originally wanted to copy the suspension setup. We decided to modify our 6x6 S&S cab instead since we've already done one and copying the suspension exactly is pretty tricky. Already had the arms, so on they went.

Been a long while since we last worked on the M1079, but last week we got some good parts printed out! Front grill and fender flares turned out pretty good, working on finishing those up.

One of the largest pieces of the truck printed successfully after 15 hours on the machine.

I think I'm happy with the final front bumper design, so I whacked the ends of the frame rails off the front at proper length.

The rear box is a skeleton structure with attached polycarb panels, the first rib turned out perfect and mounted right up. Two more to go, then the rear cap piece that holds the spare tires will go on last. I expect it to be another 15-16 hour print job as it's a pretty large piece.

Mounted up the grill parts, fender flares and cab back panel. It's starting to take some shape!

Still have more finish work to do on all these pieces, but since they will be covered up with a wrap I'm not too worried about getting the surfaces 100% perfect, however filing works amazing for smoothing them out. The fenders almost look like a molded part! Interior cab pieces including all the dashboard pieces are on the printer right now and once done, the door panels are up next.

Looking like it will be another dope product. Very nice progress.

...and holy print times Batman!!

Last one til next week's big update! Still have lots of sanding to do, meanwhile doing some test fitting.

Oh it's update time!!

The last two weeks were full of fun steps in the build. The printer is behaving and we're popping out parts every day. Lexan panels for the box are up next, the painstaking process of sanding, filling and prep for painting begins. I've got a ton of work ahead of me, unfortunately it's the boring part but it has to be done.

The roof and right side door panel both turned out pretty decent! Tapped all the holes and assembled the whole thing temporarily. Still have lots of work on the interior to do.

Battery trays also came out very nice, going to run 2 packs for low and evenly distributed weight. The lower skirts are printed out of bridge material, so they are flexible!

ESC mount that rotates for show purposes. RX4 power!

attachment.php

Aaaaaand this was totally shot from the hip, but decided the side panels needed to open for access/showing off of what powers the beast.

attachment.php

Complete with latch system to hold it all in place!

attachment.php

And the final huge accomplishment, the rear area. This part took about 19 hours and finishes off the back end of the truck, with room for 2 full size spares.

Lexan panels up next and lots more to come!

That looks great, its builds like this that make we want to pull the trigger and get a 3d printer and not have to worry about shapeways anymore. How much filiment have you used on this build so far? Can't wait till the next update!

Just about 2kg of ABS, I'd say .5kg was probably support material and failed parts.

you should probably install some lights on the interior of the back area for when you open up the sides to show off what is inside... maybe a disco ball as well...

Slow going (sorta) on the DAKAR build, but it's getting there! Got panels mocked up, not too bad and didn't cut myself!

Also the roof scoop came out pretty nice and it will be functional.

Wrap is being worked on now, truck is disassembled for paint and the boring body work part. Hope to post more updates soon with it fully painted and reassembled! Mad flecks shot for gigs.
