Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

I forgot to shift+9 :flipoff:

Ha-ha, keystroke errors are fun. :ror: You should see some of my first drafts.

I got 3 packs through on 20/56 but its quite cold here right now (30* F) so I haven't had issues but once it warms up I'm assuming it will be a bit too much. It's in a 1.9 7ish lbs wraith running 3s.

Cold weather is kind to motors and ESC's. With 1.9's it might not be too bad, but it will still probably be warmer than you like when the weather heats.

48p or 32p? if 32p start with 56t spur and a 10t pinion...if 48p go with a combo that will give you something between 5:1 and 6:1.....

I forgot to mention its for 3s lipo. I'm not sure if it will be 48p or 32p. I haven't got the kit yet so I'm not sure what it has already has. I haven't got the motor yet (just about to order it from John), so I'm basically starting with a clean slate.

Oh and thanks for replying allanon1965 as I see you posted elsewhere you have a couple of these motors and are happy with them, which is why I decided to try one out!

Great, thanks guys. And just to be sure it's the BRUSHLESS Trailmaster I'm talking about, and not the older brushed Trailmaster motor John used to sell?

Yup. I run a ROC 412 3100 on 3s, which is very similar to the Holmes brushless. Ran through pinions like mad with a 48p RRP slipper. Switched to the 32p RRP slash slipper, and it's been great ever since.

Will the stock slipper work OK with this motor, or is it something that I need to upgrade right away? Also, is a plastic spur OK at first or do you need metal one with the HH Trailmaster?

I was running the RRP slipper from the get-go, so I'm not sure how those would hold up. If I had to guess, I'd think that the stock slipper and a plastic spur are not likely to hold up terribly well. A delrin spur would probably do better. But that's me guessing.

Great, thanks for everyone's help, I really appreciate it...

I am running one of my HH trailmaster brushess motors on the RRP Steel spur/slipper setup and one s on a plastic stock spur and slipper setup. Both are 32p and holding up fine!

Hey Guys went ahead and read a good bit of the thread but have not found the answer for what would be a good spur/pinion for my Wraith.

Its a stock RTR with the 20T motor with 2.2 RocK Beasts on 2s. I want a mix of good crawler and some fun rock racing type speeds (not competitive)

Will a 56/12 work or will that heat the motor too much with the heavier tires?

56/12 is a good place to start your gearing. Depending on your driving style / terrain / weather, you might develop some heat. Buy a cheap temp gauge or "feel test" it.
56/12 is what I run with no heat issues.

I am running a mmp with the roc 412 2300kv motor. Where is a good place to start on gearing. I have never run a brushless setup before on a crawler only in my Exo. Has anyone or is anyone running this setup. I will be mostly using 2s but I might throw in the 3s if I feel the need to rock race/bash more.

I finally burnt my stock motor up. I was running 84s/16p.

My setup now is running larger rc4wd Mickey Thompson Baja claws I'm looking low speed crawling and trailing and want to try he rc4wd 35t crawler motor. What gears do you guys think I should do? I have stock diff if that matters

Thanks a ton

I just put a 54 and 11 32p gears into mine on stock tires and motor and 2s lipo. I noticed a little more gear noise, is that normal with the 32p gears? Mesh isnt too tight, the motor is adjusted in all the way and its not that tight of a mesh. I bought the traxxas 3454 spur gear and had to drill the holes I used out with the next step up drill bit to get the holes to line up with the holes in the slipper but it fits and runs straight.

So far I have lost a little speed but it does seem to crawl a little better with it. Cant wait to get it out again soon and try it out some more

Yes, the 32 pitch gears make a little more noise compared to 48 pitch.

New motor and ESC and I seem to have a heat issue.

MMP, HH 3100kv Pro.

Geared 60/13 on 3s.

It's comfortably cool outside, 50* or so, motor is getting too hot to touch, hot enough to smell. Grabbed the temp gun after I walked inside and it reads 125, it was way hotter than that running.

I think I'm geared on the low side already? It's pretty slow wide open.

No boost on ESC, set to sensored only.

Just found this on an older thread:

Heat - if geared right neither will be too hot. I have a Holmes BLS540 and I have not found a gearing setup that can get temps below 150* F. JRH says his motor can handle 160 so it isn't damaging the motor. However I just feel more comfortable with my roc412 running at 90*, same gearing in the same rig.

I hope that year warranty is good.
