Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

125 is not hot. Ambient air temps can be that hot in places. So see what it says when it's really hot.
 
New motor and ESC and I seem to have a heat issue.

MMP, HH 3100kv Pro.

Geared 60/13 on 3s.

I have the same setup as you, HH Trailmaster and MMP ESC on 3S lipo, and it was suggested when I was looking for gearing to run 56/10, which will make it slower than yours with my lower gearing. I haven't finished building it yet, so I'm hoping my setup will run cool enough.

excellent threads and build videos. I started a thread yesterday regarding a new poison spider I am buying. Several people told me to try this thread. Looking to make it a crawler. Not too concerned with speed beyond your comments about wheel speed required for crawling.
Due to some price constraints, I bought an axial 55T motor and a 87T spur and a 14T and 15T pinion. With the stock 80T spur, any of the combinations puts me in the 5:1 to 6:1 ratio. I plan on using my 2Lipo 5000mahr batteries from other cars i have.
Am I in for some trouble with this setup regarding overheating or breaking any of the remaining stock RTR parts?

I'm in the same boat. Bought a 55t axial motor just to test it out. Running it on stock 20t pinion and stock 80t spur. Really liking the torque. Anyway, I haven't tested it enough to reach a point where my motor is hot. Ran it about 20 minutes in the backyard crawling up a steep slope with long grass and the motor is just a little warm then your body temp. Might try this out on the weekend to see if it does get hot but might look at the 87t spur later.
 
I had a 21.5 in mine with a 54/19 and it was slower then hell with no wheel speed,only crawled it once that way then found a deal on an 18.5 timbuk2 combo.....im glad this thread was a sticky or I prolly would have smashed this thing trying to figure out the gearing on it.ended up going back to 48 pitch with an 87-19 and it seems ok at best
 
I think I have the wrong info or im just wrong.

56/12 = 4.6:1
Trans has 3.3:1
43/13 = 3.3:1

Is all this correct ?

Ahh I had googled the trans ratio and the one place I seen was 3.3 but I thought it was closer to 2.5:1 or 2.6:1

Hey Guys, If I want to have some good speed for playing but also good torque for crawling, which Tekin pro 4 should I go with? I would like to run 2s unless I am really going to notice a huge difference with 3s, runtime is important to me

I am thinking of getting a Wraith and have a MMP ESC and these motors-3800kv 1410 Castle motor, Tekin SCX4 5.5 and Tekin Pro4 4600. I will only be using 2s as those are the only batteries I have. Which one would be good for a basher Wraith, or am I crazy even thinking of using any of these motors? I have read people using any of them with varying degrees of success. Personally I dont think I am too hard on my cars. Having never had a car of this type before, I really don't know what would be good. Think I should just sell these motors and buy a Pro4 3000 and a 3s battery or two?

Of the three you have, I would try the 3800 and see how you like the non-sensored motor. Then decide from there if you want to buy another Pro4 or other sensored 4-pole 540 in the 3000kV range.

The Pro4 is a good motor but 4600kv is more for top-end/high-speed applications than it is crawling. Although It could probably be geared low enough to work okay in a crawler.

The SC4x 5.5 would be a good motor as those long 550's (66mm) have a lot of torque, but it will need some mods to fit in the Wraith. The rear of the motor hits the right rear suspension link and won't even bolt to the stock Wraith motor plate. I had to trim some off the that mount just to get a 55mm long 550 in there.

With a 4-pole 540 in the 3000-3500kV range you probably won't need a 3S to get more speed than the Wraith can handle.

Thanks very much for your reply. I saw another person using the 3800 and it could be good for a bit. Then I would probably want to go sensored as I figure out if I go in a more crawling direction or speed/bashing.

It's comfortably cool outside, 50* or so, motor is getting too hot to touch, hot enough to smell. Grabbed the temp gun after I walked inside and it reads 125, it was way hotter than that running.

I think I'm geared on the low side already? It's pretty slow wide open.

No boost on ESC, set to sensored only.

Remembered to check with a heat gun.

Same conditions, 50*, 45 minutes of mixed use, mostly crawling.

MMP and HH BL Pro 3100, geared 60/13

MMP is warm to the touch, fan runs all the time.

Motor reads 177*

I'm just afraid this thing is going to melt down when it hits 100* outside.
 
Recently upgraded my Spawn with a Tekin 35t and geared 56/10 on 2s. Havent had a chance to really put it to test but seems alright..Im mostly trail running and some light rock crawling. What do you guys think about this set up?

I see the note that you do not recommend the HH crawlmaster 13t with 52/12 gears and recommend the 52/10 setup to prevent problems. Is this still currently a problem Or something that's been worked over the past 4 years? What are the details of the problems that occur then if you know. I just installed this motor, bec, and hitec 7950 and wanted to make sure not to smoke something right off the back.
 
Great info, I have a newbie question though.

I'm running a pretty much stock RTR Wraith and would like to gear it a bit lower to help preserve the stock motor for a while. I'm looking at the Axial 87T spur and a 16t pinion but my question is what bore size for the pinion do I need? Who's 48p 16t pinion do you all recommend?
 
I'm running a HH crawlmaster 13t with 56/10 and 3s and seems good.havent checked with heat gun but you can lay your finger on it no problem
 
With a new spawn and stock gearing, would the HH 13t crawl master expert and the stock axial esc be a good combo? The "good crawl and OK speed"? Or just get the sport version and call it fun lol. Using 2s all the time, with the stock 20t it has OK speed I just want a better quality motor.

Hi, my replacement parts came today to replace my cooked motor.Not sure if I ordered the right Spurr gear(see pic) any one know if I can use it?.Also do I still need to use a BEC with mamba max pro.thanks Harley for the recommendations for motor/esc you made it a lot easier for this noob.
