Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

It doesn't really matter what esc you pair with the servo as long as you have enough voltage from the battery to run the servo and motor equally, which in most cases is why you need a bec to regulate the power so everything gets the right amount, it also can't hurt to have an esc that can handle a 2s to 6s just in case

I am running a tekin fxr and as far as I know you can use any servo with your esc the only thing is if your getting a high powered servo you will want a external bec for it as well so everything gets the power it needs

My Wraith kit arrived today so need to start thinking about motor / ESC combos - I'm rather surprised by the speeds quoted in the 'how fast is your Wraith' thread so my original thoughts for powerplants are thrown out the window, which pretty much leads me to think 2S power just won't cut it in this rig ?.

I'm not interested in crawling - I'm building my Wraith with 2.8 Sand Paws as a FOFF type rig, so general fun running in dirt and sand are going to be its use, aim top speed 15-18mph. I'm swapping to 32p gears and metal tranny gears from the start - already got a 56T spur and 12 and 14T pinions to hand

My current options - need honest appraisal of these guys ;)

1. Go brushed - I have a Tamiya 23T (bags of torque) brushed motor and Traxxas Xl-5 ESC (not sure motor will take 3S ?)

or Go brushless

2. I have a spare sensored ESC/ 13.5T combo but its only capable of 2S :(
3. use same ESC but couple it to a 550 sized 4 pole short course motor of 3300 or 4000kV range (again on 2S) - would the bigger can help my cause ?
4. use a different ESC capable of 3S, but no ideas whether any of above would be too little or too much ?

Apologies that the info is probably out there somewhere but I've read ca 400 pages of Wraith builds / guides over the last week and I'm confused as many suggestions don;t state whether they are 2S or 3S powered (I suspect most are 3S).

Help !!

I don't have all the answers, but I have a few. I don't see any way to get the speeds you're looking for on 2s (whether brushed or brushless) without heat issues. I had heat issues running 12/56 on 3s with a ROC 412 3100 kv on 3s running Rock Beast 2.2s (which are tall for 2.2s). I'm fine now with 9t or 10t and the same 56t spur, and I am probably in your 15-18 mph range with that gearing but haven't clocked it. Your final drive ratio may be a little different depending on tire height. Hope that helps!

That's useful thanks - the tranny obviously gears down a lot through to the axles; understandable I guess given it's more crawl roots. What's the fitment of the ROC like ? (So I have an idea of what motor can lengths will work)?

I'm in the middle of a rebuild right now so I can't take any pix and I don't recall offhand how much more room there is. The ROC 412 fits fine, and I don't think you'll need to go to a full 550 to get what you're looking for (my current setup is probably very close). To get some more targeted input for what you're trying to do, it may be worth starting a new thread in the Wraith or FOFF sections. You might even find someone that's tried to do something similar. That said, if I've learned anything since I've gotten back into this, it's that you can't rely on any single source. Everyone has his/her own biases and preferences, everyone's setup is different in some way or another, and everyone has different driving conditions and styles. There's no substitute for trial and error to find what works for you. Feel free to PM if you'd like to continue the discussion and hear more about my experiences. :)

Thanks for the info exchange via PM "thumbsup"

Have ordered a 4000kV 4 pole motor thats quoted as 550 class, but is only 55mm can length so more of a ''545'' than a true 550 - that should give me no issues with fitment.

If its too slow on 2S, I'll try increasing the gearing (assuming no heat issues) or swap to 3S

I have a castle SV3 esc and a 4 pole 4600kv motor when i do mud drags in my wraith. Its insane fast, just saying ON 2S

i have a mostly stock Piston Spyder Wraith. This truck sees water, mud, rock crawling, occasional sand.

im putting in a Tekin 35t brushed, which i know will give me more low end grunt. i want to run it on 3S to get some wheel speed back. I'm still running 48p. does 15-16/80 sound about right?

Need some help just got a wraith I want to go with a tekin roc 412 3100 kv motor. And I am trying to decide on an esc so here's the choices tekin rs pro or fxr pro?

Thanks, Justin

Tekin seems to indicate the ROC motors need the RX8 or RSX.

Maybe a Castle Creations Mamba Max Pro would be a good alternative. Its about half the price and the programming accessories are cheap.

castle mamba max pro is what I run on all three of my rigs, 2 have roc 412 3100kv and 1 has a redline 13.5...

works great!

I have an RSX i can put in it but I will need to replace it with a RS pro I guess thats the route I will go.

Thanks, Justin

So I'm thinking a 35T HH Torquemaster, 18/87 gearing and 6° of timing. Right now I'm using a NiMH pack but will be going to either 2s or 3s. My Wraith sees mostly crawling but I still want some wheel speed. Does this sound like a solid setup.

35T on NiMH is not going to break any records. I would suggest jumping right to 3s ASAP. You will have much better results with crawling and wheel speed.
