Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

So I looked all over for an 84tooth spur gear that you suggest if running a 35t motor. The only one I can find is the on by kimbrough but that wont work on the wraith. So my question is what brand/product number did you use when using a 84t/48pitch spur gear? I have thought about going with an 80t spur and a 17t pinion, that about as close I will get to what you are saying. Any help would be great.

Kimbrough's work just fine.

I'm still fairly new to this, but I'm planning to run the CM Expert 13t with the stock esc, a CC 10a bec, stock gearing, and a savox 1230sg... How will this setup be? Will I run into any issues as long as I drive it smart?

Can I run a 3s Lipo on the stock esc and the CM 13t, or do I need to stick with 2s?

with running a BEC, you will be fine with 3s on stock esc and CM 13t...should be a nice running setup, but you should get away from the stock 4:1 ratio and go for a 5.25:1 ratio or better.... if your running the 80t 48p spur, you can put a 15t 48p pinion on for a 5.33:1 ratio that would be a great place to start.

then there is also the option of switching to 32p gears as well....lots of possibilities

Some great info in this thread....I've pretty much read the whole thread from start to finish and don't recall seeing anyone with the set-up I am considering...what are your thoughts on how this combo would work:

48P 14T pinion with 87T spur (or possibly 13T or 15T)
stock transmission
27T motor
stock axle gears
MIP driveshafts
2S Lipo

I mostly crawl with a bit of trails. I want to maximize my lower end torque, but maintain a bit of speed for the trails. I'm not looking for stupid fast speed though. I have been currently running the stock 20T / 80T.

Thanxs very much.

Here's where I'm at now....

48P 14T pinion with 87T spur
stock transmission (new Locked Up RC FI Spools, Robinson Racing One Piece Steel Bottom Diff Gear & Robinson Racing Hardened Steel Idler Gear should be in the mail tomorrow)
Axial 27T motor
stock differential gears
MIP driveshafts
3S Lipo

The performance and capabilities are incredible. It crawls incredibly well and roosts dirt on command.

The whole running gear will be all metal except for the spur, which I will leave plastic as the weak link...easy and cheap to replace.

I've been on the fence for a while now with upgraded motors and ESCs, but quite frankly, I don't see any reason to change them out now. I have more than enough torque and speed and if the motor goes up in smoke, a mere $20 bucks gets me a new one.

Are you referring to the transmission when you are talking about the 4:1, or are we talking about the axles as down further in your post (unless that is transmission as well)?

I have an MMP Im gonna be using in my wraith once its built. I have a redline 6.5t sensored motor I was thinking about trying. If I get the biggest spur and smallest pinion will it still be to fast for a trail rig? I also have a hh 27t but it needs brushes.

Hi I'm new hear and kinda new to rc crawling I got an axail wraith last year and I just got a mamba max pro w/ 7700kv motor also got venom 5000mah 9.5v nihm battery's it's faster than I expected it to be but it shutters allot on take off I'm also running 20t pinion and 80t spur 48 pitch any idea's on what is causing the shutter would be greatly appreciated

Check your drive shafts. make sure both cross pins are aligned parallel to each other. Make sure you check both front & rear shafts. I had the same problem."thumbsup"

That motor is way to fast. Most guys are running a 4000kv for a fast setup. 7700kv is not gonna work out that well. The NiMH could be part of it too. Lipos can handle the draw much better. I just put a redline 13.5 turn and its fast but crawls decent so far.

Jcplante - I'll get some fresh brushes for the 27 and rock that. I think the 6.5 would be good speed wise but for the low end grunt you might not have the slow speed control. I don't know though, as I am new to the crawling thing. I will say I just got the HH 27 for my PS Wraith RTR and kept the RTR ESC, went 54/14 in 32 pitch and it is AWESOME!! getting a little hot so I might drop a tooth. But I still have great trail speed and the low speed grunt to crawl up a tree. I went out this last weekend with my buddy who has the a Goat system with a 18.5, straight line we were even and through the rocks too. I was however able to get a few lines he had problems with because his Pit Bulls would fold over, I am still running the RTR tires.. anyway, long story I'd get that 27 in there and rip it up! better in the water too. "thumbsup"

Nice, I was thinking of dropping in a 17.5 redline with a 13mm rotor in my 1.9 rig. being I have it around out of my 17.5 buggy. was a little tired for racing and I had the 13mm rotor so I figured it'd give a little more drag.

Hello, so the answer must be somewhere on this forum, yet it's been driving me nuts finding it. I have a Wraith (Mattzilla's Dave's KOH Rock Racer) with 56 T and 32 pitch Robinson Racing spur gear (High Perfrmance Gen 3 with .8 module pitch, the popular upgrade recommended). It has under/over drive gears. I want to install the motor that is ideal for Vaterra Twin Hammer, Torquemaster 540 13t. What pinion gear should I use? It is for a scaler that I use for the trails, but would like a little more speed...just want to try that motor.

Ok so I am having trouble here I have a stock wraith am getting a 3s lipo in a trade I was going to run it on a tekin fxr with a rc4wd 35 turn motor on it the cheap 10 dollar motor now I think I need a bec but have been told yes and no. Also what gearing do I need right now I have a 48 pitch 17t pinion and stock spur I have a 18 and 19 tooth pinion I could put in what gears do you suggest I have a stock 20 turn also I could put in
