Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

on 32p you wont get a 16/84 combo to fit..those combo numbers are for a 48p gear set..

you would want 56t/10t or a 56t/11t 32p gear set...I dont know if a 57t or 58t will fit under the stock cover or not..

Your right I was looking everywhere and didn't find anything. I'll stick with 48p for now and go with the 16/84. Thanks for clearing that up.

Just out of curiosity how is a 13t and 27t similar motors when it comes to power? One has half the turns.

it has to do with the slots in the rotor, the 27t torque master pro is a 3 slot and the 13 crawl master pro is a 5 slot if i recall correctly..the more slots the more efficient, more power and much finer tuned for slow crawling

Correct! I run a CM 13 and have both low end smoothest control and enough wheel speed for situations that need that extra speed, uphills and trailing. Currently I run a 13/88 with 3S.

I have a brand new Torque master pro 35T 3 slot to be installed and tested, I think I will tray a 15/88 (it is slower than the CM 13T) to start with.. I like mostly crawling

Ok I bought the rtr and trashed the plastic spur. I ordered a 87t from the LHS but after I installed it I realized the guy I talked too ordered me a 80t. now I HAD a team brood 30t motor heres my current setup

running 2cell 5000mah battery
CC MMP
bec
Robinson racing metal 80t spur.
Robinson racing idler gear (other gears stock)
stock 20t pinion
currently running the stock rtr motor while I figure out what motor to get which is on its last leg cuz I was crawling two weeks ago and got the white smoke but still running

Im looking for bout stock speed but better crawling torque and to keep the heat down cause after 10 minutes of running it on flat to hilly ground no climbing the motor gets too hot to touch... help!!!:oops:

you need to get the ratio away from 4:1 and more towards a 5.25:1 to make that motor, or any other last long...try a 15t pinion, I presume its 48p spur gear..

Just got hold of a Tamiya Torque Tuned 33t to try out, what pinion should I try? I've got a 56t 32dp spur and want to run 3s

Cheers

Hey guys I'm doing my frst Wraith build from the Kit. I want to go brushless to ease the maintance. I already have a Castle MMP and was looking at the Hobbywing 3656sd 3400kv motor. It's a about $80 bucks. Anyone else using the Hobbywing 3656sd? What ratio are you running? I'm looking for some speed but not totally over crawling ability? For the money I want to spend did I overlook any other brushless motors?

I have the spider on stock with 87/14, 2S 6000.
The motor getting hot and soon will be replaced.
I'm thinking on the Tamiya (#53930) Super Stock BZ Motor 23T (OFF-Road).

I like it to be more crawling but keep some speed.

Any thoughts?

Start with a 10-12 t pinion. The most you should go is 14.

Never used that motor. You'd be best served to look at a tekin redline 13.5 gen 1 or a holmes hobbies trailmaster 13.5.

Check out holmes hobbies. The 13t crawlmaster expert would be right up your alley.

Is the wraith stock 20T motor safe in water?

I have everything else water proofed in plasti dip

Brushed motors work fine in water. Just need to perform some maintenance after a hard run. They'll run in mud too. However dirty water and mud can cause issues with the brushes contacting the com

Can I get an idea on where to start for gearing using an MMP and 13.5T on both 2s and 3s?

I'd start with 87/18 or 56/11 depending on If you're running 48p or 32p gears.

I run a 3656sd on 4s with a MMP in my wraith. I couldn't be happier. I run it on 14/60 gearing but will switch back to an 11t pinion when I replace the one I broke. It will go 15+ on 3s and 25+ on 4s. Crawls great with a bunch of expo.

Some great info in this thread....I've pretty much read the whole thread from start to finish and don't recall seeing anyone with the set-up I am considering...what are your thoughts on how this combo would work:

48P 14T pinion with 87T spur (or possibly 13T or 15T)
stock transmission
27T motor
stock axle gears
MIP driveshafts
2S Lipo

I mostly crawl with a bit of trails. I want to maximize my lower end torque, but maintain a bit of speed for the trails. I'm not looking for stupid fast speed though. I have been currently running the stock 20T / 80T.

Thanxs very much.

The guy asks about a high quality 1500w 4 pole motor and you tell him he should buy a 700w 2 pole motor that costs more.

I'm glad I don't shop where you do. The question originally asked, stated the motor was $80. The Tekin Redline gen 1 is $80 (although they are harder to come by these days) and so is the HH Trailmaster. Not sure what math you used, but I guess that would be equal by normal standards.
And for crawling, yes I would recommend a 2 Pole motor as it has better low speed resolution. After using Tekin Redline Gen 1, Roc412, Pro4, I'd go with a 2 pole if I was most concerned about my low speed control vs. most concerned about power.

Anyone else got Traxxas Titan 21T motor with Wraith?
How your bearings have lasted?

I have that motor and its driven no more than 10 times when i had two destroyed spur gears just in 2 days.
When i began to examine closer, it seems that bearings are done with that motor.
This is quite unacceptable, even when motor costs no more than $20.
I dont know why the bearings are done, but im surely not going to buy another Titan, this is it for me.
Otherwise, very nice motor for Wraith..

So, im goint to need something as fast as that Titan and something which can handle 3S lipos? Any recommendations?

I have an opportunity to pick up a Tekin Pro4 3300 for $50 in almost new conditions. I'm currently running a Teking RedLine 17.5 w/MMP on 3s and 9/60 gearing, speed and torque is good but there are times I wish I had that extra speed to make it up the hill. I'm not one for destroying my Wraith; so, could I just set my settings on my MMP to protect it and could some one help me with those settings?

Throttle is proportional. You can just use the appropriate amount for a given situation and you won't break. Why turn it down.? When you have an open stretch wouldn't you miss the rest of the power?

I was thinking more of adjusting the power/throttle curve at the bottom end and not necessarily turning it down at the top end. I remember seeing a post were people were using different settings to get good slow crawling speed but I can't find it now.
