Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

I and many others run the Castle Creations 10 amp BEC with the AE2 ESC and have no problems with 3S LiPo packs.

Holms has suggested that even with his ESCs you need an external BEC.

Yes, this ESC is amazing and I love it."thumbsup"Runs with a CC BEC for the Savöx Servo.
Will try 14/16/20 with each 80/84/87 and then have a look how it works.
Thought, that 87/16 is the best choice.

Have a good one

Search has landed me no results, but curious if motor choices for a 2 speed have been covered yet?

Running the RC4WD 2 speed in a scaler & wanting a "broader" power range. Basically looking to close the gap between low & high a little. There are times that low doesn't quite offer the wheel speed, but high requires more power than motor will offer at that speed. My gut says I'm looking for more torque on the bottom end (in other words, looking to expand the power downward more than upward).

Currently running stock Wraith motor, Traxxas XL-5 ESC, & 2s lipo (committed to stay 2s, I don't think I could fit 3s if I had to). Better components alone may net me the increase I'm looking for, I'm just clueless.

EDIT: For clarity, primarily crawl / bash. Have the 2 speed for bashing duty speed, looking for control & predictable power. Definitely brushed, as it will see alot of trail duties.

Just my personal 2 cents: on the cheap side of things, I've been running a Traxxas Titan 21t in my Wraith and even with the stock transmission I get everything I want with it. It's a 550 sized can. And it's only $25. I cut and drilled out a little piece of maybe 2mm thick plastic and put it beneath the transmission so it would fit. Couldn't be happier. And on 3s (I know you're not going that route) it crawls and goes as fast as the Wraith is fun/controllable at.

I don't have the combo just yet...but the MMP and Roc 412 is supposed to do what your after and you may not even need the 2X.

I'm not sure if I have missed it or not, but I thought I'd post the ring & pinion gear options for the Wraith AR60 axles. All of these are available as hardened gears. 14 tooth pinion gear can be obtained with the 36/14 set.

Factory ring and pinion gear is 38/13.

Ring gears
36, 38, 43

Pinion Gears
13, 14

36/13=2.77
36/14=2.57
38/13=2.92
38/14=2.71
43/13=3.31
43/14=3.07

You can't mix and match the gear sets.

Well damn, I didn't think about tooth size. Presuming that is the reason you cant mix them.. Knew that if the gears are beveled they wouldn't mesh.

So.. available gear sets are
36/14
38/13
43/13.

Ive dug and dug through countless pages and have not found an answer to my problem. This is my set up. Tekin rs with a 17.5 t redline with a cc bec. In my Poison Spyder. I just changed over to all steel gears in the trans. Over drive gears in the front. When I order my steel spur I must have been half asleep. I ended up with a 32 pitch 54t for an EXO. I made it work with a lot of burned up drills and a lot of patients .Anyhow my question is. in your opinion is a 17 tooth pinion with the 54 tooth spur in 32 pitch going to be geared way to high for my set up? Im thinking I need to drop the pinion to a 14 tooth to get closer to that 4:1 ratio. Its about 3.17:1 with this. Big concern is heat I know. With the brushless im uncertain. But I really need and an educated opinion. I will be running this on 2s and 3s. hope I gave enough info. Still a little green on gearing. I will be doing some light crawling bashing but for the most this will be a KOH rig.

With the 54t spur I would think you would want a 12-13t pinion. I think that the 3000-3500Kv sensored brushless motors work the best on the high side of 4:1.

Just looking on thoughts of this gearing in my wraith...

54/14 T 32P
Dynamite 70A sensored esc
Dynamite fuze 13.5t sensored brushless
2s 5000mah lipo
Novak 2-7s 5A/6V BEC
Mip scx10 driveshafts
RRP trans gears
Battery forward mod, lowered around 1"
Fastback mod
Aluminum knuckles and rear carriers
Stock aluminum linkage/steering linkage
stock plastic uppers
I notice Harley had recommended 56/14 but is this simply in a low speed/crawl application? I plan on advancing timing and messing around to get a lot of top end and wheels speed...
Also I enclosed the sides and front openings between the cage/interior and the axles/plates with .060 lexan for some protection from dirt/rocks whatever...so less air flow is gonna be an issue but if one of you have run a similar combo can you advise me on heat ranges so I don't burn up my motor I know the esc limit is 160C*
Anyways any info is appreciated!

hi I'm driving in my wraith with a mmp tekin redline 13.5 t at 3 s yesterday he was the hillclimb extremely hot 32p 52/14.is it too long it too short?

Hello

I plan to run 3S cel lipo on my Wraith (crawl, trail)

Motor : HH 35T brushed expert 540
ESC : Castle SV3
Tires : 2.2 RC4WD TTC Baja Claw X2SS Outer Diameter: 5.70" (145mm)

I saw the 84/16 on HH web Site but for 27T ou 13T

Axial Wraith

Fun running: 27t TorqueMaster or 13t CrawlMaster
NOTE: We recommend 16/84 or slower gearing to prevent motor overheating on 3s lipo!

But for a 35T, what would you recommanded ? for now I'm 19/80 on 2S

Thx in adavnce

recommendations on gearing for a ROC412 3100kv with a sidewinder esc?
also ideas on other things that need to be beefed?

My first recommendation is getting a MMP instead of the sidewinder. The sidewinder isn't a sensored ESC, so any low speed crawling with be very irritating, not to mention the roc412 will work much better being run sensored. I run a MMP with a 4-pole hobbywing 3400kv on 2s and 56/13 was good for medium speed and good crawling. I currently have it set at 56/11 for a bit more low end grunt, still plenty of wheel speed tho.
