Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

87/15 still go under the stock spur cover ?

Nmv I have 87 scx10 spur and a losi 16 pinion I will try

HEy Guys I'm really new to the RC world but learning fast. I recently swapped out the Traxxas VXL 3s ESC and motor in my Stampede for a Castle setup (Traxxas ESC fried under warranty and couldn't wait to get it back). Now I have the VXL 3s ESC and Traxxas motor back and sitting idle. Would this be a suitable setup for the Wraith kit? I have both 2S lipo and the stock NiCad to run. I'm looking to do some back yard crawling.

the stock battery is a NiMH not a NiCad...next...the velineon system isnt sensored and will not crawl worth a crap...I had one in my experiment 626 wraith and then tried a castle 3800 sct system, still no crawlability. Both systems cogged badly..

run a holmes hobby brushed 27T or 35T torquemaster motor with the stock axial esc and the 2s lipo if you want to crawl...you dont say if the gears are stock or not so I will presume they are...so run a pinion that will get you in the range of 5.5:1 to 6.5:1 ratio and it will crawl pretty darn well..

Ah, yes, NiMH. So that looks to be about $200. I was hoping to use the Traxxas stuff to keep the cost down since I have it already. Being that this is just to get my feet wet, what is a good cheap way to just get started? I saw someone mention a hobbywing ESC that was only $25. Then I'd just need a motor too. Looking for suggestions for bare bones start up to see if I even like crawling (on that note maybe I'm better off just starting with some smaller RTR version of something...??). The Wraith just gets such praise.

ok, so i decided to go with a tekin pro 4 instead i want more wheel speed and top end, but still some crawling ability....suggestions on gearing and on the motor KV?
the more i read about brushless ratings...the more confused i get. guessing that the higher revs make more top end power...looking for something around a stock slash speed.

Any KV rating in the mid to low 3000 range will give you the result you are looking for. As for gearing, you are probably gonna want to beef up the Trans gears and get a better slipper. The ratio I would stick with would be around 4-4.5:1. I changed over to 32p and went with a 56/13 ratio and it was pretty quick.

a good cheap way to get started is to buy one here in the classifieds or a roller off ebay.. I apologize I didnt catch where you were asking about the kit version..

Mine started out as the RTR version Poison spyder wraith from tower hobbies..then upgraded as time went along...personally, i would do the rtr and a holmes hobbies toque master sport 27T(34.99) as an entry level, then upgrade to a deans connector with a 2s lipo setup...

you could look for a club in your area or a buddy that maybe has one and try it out before you buy..

That's an idea. Was looking forward to the build though to get to know the rig more initmately and for the experience :). Guess I could always just tear it apart and rebuild it.

I'll keep that motor in mind. One other think is I have the castle link already. I think I saw the stock Wraith ESC can work with that, is that correct?

The kv is derived from the mechanics of the motor. It's not something you can program. 3000-3500 kv sounds high but the motors that we are recommending, 3656sd, pro4, and roc412 are torquey 4 pole motors that still crawl extremely well. No brushless motor will start up smooth when headed down hill but that is more of a esc firmware issue that hopefully will be resolved this year. My wraith with a 3656sd, 3s, and 60/11 gearing crawls great and goes 15mph.

Out of curiosity, what is the mah rating on your battery and how much run time do you get? Thanks!

i use my wraith for trailing and crawling mostly and use stock esc with tekin HD 45t motor and stock gearing works great for me. lots of torque and enough speed to easily go faster than a walking pace.

divide the spur by the pinion... 86 divided by 16 = 5.375 86 divided by 18 = 4.777

I would run the 17.5 with the 5.375 ratio, but not with the 4.77 ratio..but thats my personal opinion...it may work fine for you and your needs...just not for mine.. run them both and check the temps on the motor. I try to keep mine below 140-150 degrees Fahrenheit...this is what I am comfortable at.

I read through a few pages of this thread and I have come up with this combo for my wraith...

HH 13t Crawlmaster
32 pitch 60/15 gears
3s 2200mah lipo
CC BEC

How will it compare to stock setup as far as speed and crawling capabilities? I'm trying to keep some speed for trail running, but also staying capable of hitting the rocks as well.

this is from Holmes Hobbies website..the ratio they recommend is 5.25 or slower..so you dont burn up the motor on 3s..fun running is a bit vague but I would go with the 5.25 minimum anyway, no matter what I am doing...it will be faster and crawl better on 3s than the stock setup on 2s..that being said, mine is at 56t/11t for 5.09 ratio. Its just above what they recommend but I have had no problems so far..

Axial Wraith

Fun running: 27t TorqueMaster or 13t CrawlMaster
NOTE: We recommend 16/84 or slower gearing to prevent motor overheating on 3s lipo!

You know I was reading that earlier and forgot all about it.
So I'll go with 32 pitch 16/84 and I should be faster, and better crawling than stock on 2s. "thumbsup" Right?

on 32p you wont get a 16/84 combo to fit..those combo numbers are for a 48p gear set..

you would want 56t/10t or a 56t/11t 32p gear set...I dont know if a 57t or 58t will fit under the stock cover or not..
