Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

You chose a solid setup, personally I would go with a 35t instead of the 45t but that's just my preference.

Big difference on a 35t and 45t?

I got a tip on Axials Overdrive kit (AX30401) in front and Underdrive (AX30402) to the back axel.
Is that a god solution to get a better crawler? Or is this question in the wrong section? Gearing?

There is a pretty good difference between the two.

For a PURE crawling rig, yes the over/under setup works great. I'm a big fan of it in my shafty crawlers.

As for gearing, see the first page.
 
Tekin or HH Torquemaster sport?

Hi, I'm just wondering what's the best option for my wraith, I'll be doing crawling and trailing (water and mud) most of the time; I'm looking for a tekin fxr with 35t motor or the HH TorqueMaster Sport 35t. What's your opinion?

The Tekin and Holmes Sport have similar specs.

Personally, I would encourage you to try the new Crawlmaster Sport or Expert.

First of all I want to say thank you for this thread Harley. The time you have put into it to help others is apparent. I have an SCX10 that need a motor, battery and ESC and I figured tranny and axle gearing is the same so I could ask here. Are Turnigy Trackstars any good? If so 1870KV or 2590KV, 2S or 3S? I don't need insane power or the best just descent speed and descent crawling ability. Thank you in advance.

I don't know anything about them, are they sensored? The ESC is very important, my best recommendations are on page 1.

I run around 3000KV in my 1.9's as well, and always on 3s.

As much as I'd like to spend $150 on a ROC 412 or Redline I can't. I'm looking for a more budget option. I guess I'm basing my questions off of my old Tacon 2950KV sensorless motor. Obviously it had cogging issues so I'm not getting another one. But with it geared REALLY low, (I don't recall the exact gearing but I think it's probably 87/14 plus UD gears both axles) it probably does close to 8 or 9 mph on a 7.2V nimh. On a 3S I'm pretty sure it would SCREAM. I just don't see how a 3000KV motor on 3S is anywhere near a comfortable speed.

2950KV * 7.2V = 21,240 RPM's
3000KV * 11.1V = 33,300 RPM's

Sorry if I'm digging to deep or thinking too hard instead of just believing you, but please help me out here. :oops:

I can't say much about the motor, I don't see the rotor diameter or anything listed. It looks like a typical 2 pole motor.

It will likely work just fine, but again the ESC is going to be very important. As far as the KV, the 3000 range has worked best for me for the last couple years. The wheel speed is something that I use quite a bit. It's a personal preference thing but also a pretty common KV choice for scalers.
 
Okay one last question and then I'll leave you alone. Why 3000KV on 3S instead of say 4500KV on 2S? My hunch is that the lower KV motor generally will have a lower current threshold to start the motor turning thus giving you a wider range of speeds but more especially the slow speed. Am I right?

Power. A 3000 kv on 3s will have more power than a 4500 on 2s. It kind of (but not exactly) the basics to JohnRobHolmes saying of "Volt up, gear down".
 
Hallo Harley, hope my post fits into this thread, I followed your suggestions and went forourque Mastey the T HH CM Pro 13T, 3S, gearde 14/88 and I am very happy with that! owever I will also try the Torque Master Pro 35T just because I do want to test the Brutality of it!

I have ran so far almost 4 hours with this set up, normally runs by 45 min each and checking motor temp, type of run is mainly big rocks triling and crawling, surely power spending, and the motor does get hot after some hard and continuous "slow rocking", so hot that I cannot keep my finger on it for 2 sec, so I stop and cool down.

1- My question is do you think the CM Proi 13T is too much for the 3S and 14/88? actually gear wise it is perfect for my needs, I may accept to reduce pinion down to 13T and loose little wheel speed......

2- second question is how can I realize the motor does need maintenance or rebuild? Measuring brushes' lenght? bearings? and specially do I have to expect some deterioration of the performances overall to tell the motor does need maintenance? or what other parameter or sign should I care of?


I would appreciate very much your response on these 2 questions..

Slim, I have to say that brushed motor care is not my area of extreme expertise. I normally find my brushes need replaced when they are nearly gone. I can normally get about 3 or 4 sets of brushes through a motor before I have the comm turned true on a lathe.

As for the gearing and 13t, everything depends on how people drive. I had good luck running gearing similar to that but it may have been our difference in driving style and terrain. If it keeps getting hot you may want to gear down a little more.
 
I already bought the Robinson Racing 80T Gen3 Spur gear so with that being said what pinion should I run if I were to buy the Torque master Expert 540?

Would you recommend the 35t or 45t? I'm looking for straight crawler not speed.

Also with that motor can I use the stock ESC and from Holmes Hobbies should I use the addition on Holmes Battery Leads for the stock ESC?
