Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

I already bought the Robinson Racing 80T Gen3 Spur gear so with that being said what pinion should I run if I were to buy the Torque master Expert 540?

Would you recommend the 35t or 45t? I'm looking for straight crawler not speed.

Also with that motor can I use the stock ESC and from Holmes Hobbies should I use the addition on Holmes Battery Leads for the stock ESC?

I prefer the 35t. That is also stated on the first page.

As for the gearing, get the smallest pinion you can since you have that 80t spur which is really just too small.

The stock ESC is just fine.

Ok I know I have a 17t one around here somewhere. I'll have to take it in to my LHS to test fit pinions.

Thank you for you time.

You will want smaller than a 17, I'm just not sure how small of a pinion will fit without the motor hitting the case. I would think about getting rid of that spur and get a proper sized spur for crawling.

Well its a good thing it gets here tomorrow I guess I could just send it back to Tower :)

My LHS doesn't carry Axial parts. What other spurs work?

Also I read the first page a while back and what is your choice under "best for crawling" for an esc below the BRXL? I'm not looking for waterproof. My servo isn't waterproof and I'm running a thunder power 2S LiPo. So waterproof is kinda outta the question haha.

Thanks in advance. I'm new to crawling but been in RC for a bit. Just dealt with speed not slow haha.

But this wraith is freaking sick!

The BRXL comes in both waterproof and non-waterproof. It's a great ESC, worked really well for me for a long time.

Slim, I have to say that brushed motor care is not my area of extreme expertise. I normally find my brushes need replaced when they are nearly gone. I can normally get about 3 or 4 sets of brushes through a motor before I have the comm turned true on a lathe.

As for the gearing and 13t, everything depends on how people drive. I had good luck running gearing similar to that but it may have been our difference in driving style and terrain. If it keeps getting hot you may want to gear down a little more.

Hi Harley and thanks for the reply, I apologize for my messy text, I had some issue with my mobile while writing it......

Well I agree drive style may make a huge difference for the motor temp etc... I will actually try the 13t pinion as ultimate gear ratio. Actually the transmission is smooth and the pinion ring mesh is as well all right so non issues from the transmission in terms of undesired fractions

About the motor service I think I got it and will go for some extra brushes and springs !!!!

Thanks a lot as usual!,,

What a great thread, thank you so much for the info, being new to crawling and having just fried my first motor, I was unsure what to replace it with, now I know exactly what setup I want.

Think i'm on the right track. Just would like to get your guys opinions. Getting a Tekin Pro4 4000kv from a friend for free. I have a 11T pinion going on a 60T spur. "All 32P" Question is, would the CC Mamba Max Pro be a good sensored esc for me? Thanks

Should be fine. I've never ran the 4000 kv version but the 3300 never made my MMP heat up much at all.

I fried my stock motor last weekend, and am upgrading to a Holmes 35t in a week or so, but want to run a Novak 55 that I have until then. Do I need to regear to keep this (the 55) motor safe? I'm running 2s and stock gears now.

You might be OK, just check temps as often as you can. Put your finger through the rear of the skid and see if you can keep your finger on it without feeling like you're going to get burned.

After reading the thread, I think I want to go with the MMP SCT w/ 3800kv motor, on 3s lipo... I loved Castle sit-ups when I ran them in my 1/8 buggies, does this sound like a good combo to use?

Darkstar I have been running this combo since the beginning of April, not much of a crawler but for a trail rig/basher it is pretty awesome. You will need to gear it low 6:1 or lower to make the bottom end smooth, I run 87/16 with underdrive diffs... this is about as high as I would want to go, motor temps after an hour @125F, esc never gets past warm. FWIW the top speed is very similar to a VXL on 3s but the 4pole does much better wheelies :D Bash on!

If you want the low speed control for rocks or anything you need to get a SENSORED motor. This is detailed on the first page.

I would really consider getting a sensored motor to allow you to run the rig in more situations.

Thanks for the info... I'll browse over the info again. I'll see what sensored motors are out there.

Well I did some research... I'm going with a MMP, and the motor, I'm torn between the 13.5 Redline, and the Pro4 3300. What do you think about running a 4300 Pro4 motor? Too much on 3S? Or would I be better off running it on 2S?
