Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

Hi there,

I'm going to be picking up a Wraith kit, so I've been doing a LOT of reading on this forum and all around. I think the 13t CrawlMaster is the right motor for me, along with the Holmes BR-XL waterproofed ESC. However, I do have a question. The Holmes website says that the ESC is rated at 80 amps continuous, but does that mean that's the amp limit for any motor running off of it? Can the motor create a higher amp spike? I'm asking since I'm trying to figure out which Lipos to get in terms of amp draw. I e-mailed Holmes but have not gotten a response yet.

Thanks!

so , a bit of an update . i think i bought a damaged mmp , because it cogs at low rpm . ive double checked the sensor wire , tried a different one , tried a different motor and a different esc , with all cogging occurs if its the mmp is in sensored mode or smart sense , in sensorless it works , but its not smooth.

the motor is a tekin 13.5 redline with a 12.5 high torque rotor.

the gearing is 87/17

this is a video of the problem.

it shouldn't be this bad right?

First thing I noticed in that video is that it looks like your gear mesh is WAY too loose. It may be the angle but I think I saw the pinion move a good bit before engaging the spur on the first time you applied throttle.

Honestly I would try it by driving it to see if it is an issue. Make sure you are in sensored or smart sense and go try and push the tires over something fairly vertical starting from a dead stop, like a decent sized curb. Give it as little throttle as you can and try to inch up it, that will tell you if its acceptable or not.

is it smooth in reverse? i heard of a guy having all sorts of problems he had to flip his difs cause the mmp is cw only . just something to check good luck
can this also be accomplished by switching the wires on the motor?

You have to change the rotation in the programming. The MMP IS NOT CW ONLY.

good to know cause im probally going to have to switch, i have the tinbuc2:evil:

i wish i found this sight before i bought my motor/esc combo

I was thinking of piclking up that Axial 55t brushed motor. Only $18! I'm used to Nitro engines so this seems like a bargain hobby.

20T to 55T...there's a lot of choices in between...... ;-)

So I finally broke down and bought a wraith kit. And before the truck has made it to Afghanistan I have already bought a hh 16t tc and brxl. Along with a hitec 7955tg, and aluminum knuckles and chubs, and also 2 5000 mah lipo batts. :)

I'll refine this as time goes.

Choosing a Motor and ESC

The most common question asked in the Wraith section seems to be “What motor should I run”. I can see why people don’t know what motor to chose, it is a multi-level problem to solve. While those questions will never stop hopefully we can cut some of them down by adding this reference.

To make a long story short, for more detailed info read the following posts:

Good speed and OK crawling: Tekin 13.5 Redline (or Tekin Pro 4 3300) and Castle Mamba Max Pro – Faster than stock 20t motor and fairly smooth low end. Not a good choice for water or mud.

Good crawling and OK speed: Holmes Crawlmaster 13t and Holmes BRXL – OK for water and mud as long as you get the waterproof ESC and keep your motor maintained.

Best for crawling and low speed: Holmes 35t TorqueMaster Pro and Holmes BRXL – Smooth crawling with enough wheel speed to get up hills.

Harley, what will the difference be between a Pro4 3300 and a 13.5 Tekin?? Assuming same batteries, ESC, etc etc

harley quick question in regards to a r2d.

i have a novak 13.5 ballistic and a turngiy 17.5t . what is the pinon i want to run with this tranny on either motor. crawling more important than speed. my esc is losi exclorion sensored esc. running 2s lipos

I really don't recall the gearing on that trans. You'll have to do some research.
