Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

I picked up a hpi 55t motor this weekend just for fun...way slower than the stock motor. Thinking I'll order the gear outlined in the OP though

GEARING!

Are you running something for mostly trails and crawling (example, 35t Torqemaster)? Short Story, 84/18

If you changed out your motor to something with a little more low end control and power then you likely could benefit from a better gear ratio. This isn't a must for a setup in this range however. The stock ratio is OK, but just not ideal in my opinion for someone who is looking to spend most of their time going slow. I do still feel that even if you're a rock crawler only that you will benefit from some wheel speed. I would suggest that if you do change gearing you start with an 84/18 setup.

Harley for the life of my i cant find a 84t spur in a 32p >.<. i've already picked up the 18t 32p pinion just trying to find that spur lol.

Hi everyone I am new here, I have a couple traxxas RCs a T-maxx and a stampede but have not driven them in about 5 years. I am now looking into this crawler category as we have a couple real life crawlers. Ive been reading and reading and am kinda lost. I think i have it down to a Wraith either RTR or kit. the RTR id be ready to go and could upgrade later as i needed. I wont be competing in anything just the weekend fun around the house and things like that. I think i am leaning towards the kit because i can put good parts in and do it right the first time. But im lost on brushed and brushless and what size. I want a good all purpose rig so good speed and good crawling would be ideal. I would really appreciate if someone could just suggest the motor esc and steering servo for me because i am confused. Also what controller do you all recommend? thanks for your time as i know these questions have been answered and ive scrolled through the pages but havent really found a definite answer.

I think I've decided on a Holmes hobbies torque master pro rock racer combo 27T for my wraith kit. With their brxl. Can that combo run on 3s? Or should I run on 2s? I got a futaba 4pl controller. And should I install a BEC? I'd like to keep the stock gears and not change those. Mainly a trail rig with some crawling here and there.

The 27t combo will run 3s with no issue. You will need a BEC though.

I do still suggest changing the gearing though.

Alright thanks Harley. If I were to run the stock gearing for now what would the issues be? To much speed for crawling? Would I just need to be careful while crawling and not get it in a bind? Thanks again.

The gearing is high and can cause excess stress on the motor. You need to watch the temp of the motor to make sure you don't damage it.

Well I ordered a HH 27T rock racer combo with the Brxl and that is a torque master pro motor. Planning on 3s lipo and ill run a bec.

I'm a little confused on what gear ratio now your first post said 56/16 and I've also been told by others a 86/16. So which is right? Those see to opposite ends of the spectrum so to speak

im gonna say the 56/16 is 32p and 86/16 is 48p....32 pitch gears are a little stroger imo

Ok, I have read thru the first few pages and the last 3-4 that are the most recent and I have my kit laying on the kitchen table and I am looking into motors/ ESC's. Per the first page I am looking at the MMP ESC and trying to decide between the Redline Pro 13.5 or 17.5 motors, but to throw a curve at you, I also have a RC4WD 2 speed trans (for the wraith/ honcho) that I am thinking about throwing in the mix. It has a 60/15 32P gear set and I am wondering 1. if it would be stout enough to handle the Brushless motors, and 2. if so which of the above motors would be best used. Per RC4WD, 2nd gear bumps from the axial 2.6:1 up to a 1.78:1 so the 17.5T would pick up a little top end and still have the extra grunt for low speed crawling, Yes/ No/ Maybe

I hope that makes sense. And if the 2spd is not up to handling the Wraith, then I will just drop it into my honcho with a 27T and be done.

Also, off topic slightly but the MMP ESC has a built in BEC for the servos and such, correct so no external BEC is needed?

Thanks

Is 56/12 a lower gear than 56/14? I'm having trouble finding a place that has the 32p gears to buy it seems all I find fit other vehicles.
